So, yeah it is late but here is my stitching round up for 2023. I am thinking about blazing this... but I will say I used to blaze EVERY finished piece, so Tumbler has lost out on that money this year. All because they need to upgrade the accessibility of the site.

oh wow you werent joking abt old guard comic art being ugly as shit
THE STRUGGLE IS REAL.
The writing is *chefs kiss* but the art is some of the worst I've ever put up with for the sake of great characters. It's just. Really not my vibe.
That's one of the reasons why I really adored Tales Through Time - because I loved seeing the characters drawn by different artists.
My personal favourite art from Tales Through Time are by Jacopo Camagni ("Zanzibar and Other Harbors"), and Steve Lieber ("How to Make a Ghost Town"):

same anon here: yeah, greg said specifically that both joe and nicky are gay, and andy is "pan" (he used that term)
as for the joe and nicky with kids thing, i absolutely adore the idea, and to me it goes even farther than what andy did by rescuing and raising zeus (though, i have no doubt they would do the same in that circumstance - we even see hints of how much they love children on copley's conspiracy board)
after reading "Zanzibar and Other Harbors" (Tales Through Time issue #1), i realized that we were being told in no uncertain terms that Joe and Nicky would "always have family" in the queer community, as a safety net of sorts even outside the emotional support of Andy and Booker. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that they settled down for a number of years in Weimar Berlin and got very close to the queer/artistic community there, and made themselves almost a 2nd "found family".
of course, they'd always have to move once people caught on that they weren't aging, but at least they had *something* tethering them to humanity. I guess that's my long-winded way of saying that I totally believe that they were "parents" for homeless/alienated/scared queer youth throughout history looking for a roof to have over their head, warm food, and a guiding hand.
(it always kind of made me sad that Booker tells Joe that he and nicky "always had each other", as if the platonic love they had for others was less important.)
Oh, nice. It’s good to know we’ve canon sexualities for half the group :) I wonder how he feels re: Booker, Quỳnh, and Nile’s…
Fuck, Joe and Nicky fostering/supporting queer youth is perfect. Thank you for the concept, Anon.
And, yeah: it devastates me that Book doesn’t think he and Andy also have Nicky and Joe. I hope that was just the guilt of murdering Andy speaking, and not his actual thoughts regarding their relationship with the group/other people.

📖 💖
hello!
📖: If you had to remove one book from the series, which would you choose? well i can only assume this would include comics, so hmm... i'd have to go with tales through time: zanzibar and other harbors. it was a decision between this and love letters, but i don't like the art in zanzibar and other harbors so that one wins. it's just two generic men who share the same names as joe and nicky. just two generic comic book men. and love letters has some interesting history and story implications.
and yes, this does mean the nun story beats out zanzibar. they hated me for speaking the truth.
💖: What is your biggest unpopular opinion about the series? i'm gonna continue on with comic-related opinions, and it's that the comics are good and the art isn't anywhere as bad as people act. one caveat: there's some iffy choices in how joe and noriko are portrayed, i agree. but the art is interesting otherwise, and especially with the recent short where the old trio meet j&n for the first time, leandro's art is getting real good. i can't wait to see more of it, especially more of nile and booker in his evolving style.
and i also find it weird the way people will rave about the story and then say greg needs his story taken away from him. or that fandom would do it better. politely: no 🖤
thank you kind anon <3
(ask game but i think the options are running out unless anyone wants to start asking about other fandoms, can you imagine)

Worlds shortest war🔥
The shortest war in history, known as the Anglo-Zanzibar War, took place on August 27, 1896, between the British Empire and the Sultanate of Zanzibar, located in present-day Tanzania. The conflict lasted for an incredibly brief period, estimated to be between 38 and 45 minutes. The war arose as a result of a succession dispute following the death of Sultan Khalid bin Barghash. The British, who had significant influence in Zanzibar as a protectorate, favored another candidate for the sultanate, Hamoud bin Mohammed. However, Barghash's nephew, Khalid bin Barghash, declared himself the sultan without British approval. The British had warships stationed in the harbor of Zanzibar, ready to enforce their preferred candidate's ascendancy to power. As the deadline for Khalid bin Barghash to step down approached, the British issued an ultimatum, demanding his resignation. When the deadline passed without compliance, the British launched an attack. At 9:02 a.m. local time on August 27, 1896, the British warships, armed with cannons, bombarded the Sultan's palace and other key targets in Zanzibar. The Sultan's forces, consisting of poorly equipped soldiers and outdated artillery, were no match for the superior firepower of the British. Within minutes, the Sultan's palace was set ablaze and destroyed. The British warships inflicted significant damage to the sultanate's defenses, including the sinking of several boats in the harbor. The Sultan's forces suffered heavy casualties. Realizing the futility of resistance, Sultan Khalid bin Barghash sought refuge in the German consulate. Eventually, he was captured and deported. Hamoud bin Mohammed, the British-backed candidate, assumed power, effectively ending the conflict. The exact duration of the war is a matter of debate, with estimates ranging from 38 to 45 minutes. Regardless, it remains the shortest recorded war in history. The swift and overwhelming British victory demonstrated the power disparity between colonial powers and smaller states during the late 19th century.

Tanzania is a dream luxury safari destination. One-quarter of its surface area has been set aside for conservation, and its protected areas harbor an estimated 20% of Africa’s big wildlife. The world-famous Serengeti National Park, the top attraction safari-wise, is famous for its wildebeest migration and density of lions and other carnivores. In addition to the Serengeti, Tanzania has six other Unesco World Heritage Sites, including Ngorongoro Crater (the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera), snow-capped Mt Kilimanjaro, the 30,000km²/12,000mi² Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) and the spice island of Zanzibar. It’s difficult to think of any other African country that outshines Tanzania’s natural attractions. #AROYÓexperience #luxurysafari #luxuryafricansafari #luxurytanzaniasafari #luxurytravel #tanzaniasafari #vacation #travel #africa #adventure #wildlife #luxury #traveling #tourism #explore #love #wilderness #wildernessculture #zanzibar #zanzibarisland #kenya #experience #kenyasafari (at Serengeti National Park, Tanzania) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmYS6Q4Nmtb/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

heres another one of these for you all
Rating: Teen and Up
Summary:
“I have a friend, stationed somewhere else. I would give anything to know he’s okay.”
“What’s his name?” Jack asks.
“Joseph,” Nicky answers, something soft in his voice. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small frame, tilting it to show Jack the photograph inside, of a man with dark curls and bright eyes, laughing at the camera.

Apart from the allusion to The Picture of Dorian Gray, I noticed these two hints:
Tumblr media
Nicky is wearing a tie clip with the five-fold Cross, or Cross of Jerusalem, a heraldic symbol originated in the 11th century.
Tumblr media
And here Nicky is referring to a traditional sea shanty named "What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor?", which makes sense because they actually were sailors!
I loved the story and art SO much!! Excellent canon content ♥ We're so lucky!!!

The Tales Through Time story about Joe and Nicky called Zanzibar and Other Harbors, is very good, and I enjoyed it a lot. I’m not gonna go into detail about the plot and themes: the story is short, and the themes are very intentionally obvious. Read it for yourselves.
I’m only making this post to nitpick on the panel that baffled and even annoyed me. Here’s the panel:
Tumblr media
It’s one of the key panels in the story, but I’m not talking about what is happening. I’m talking about the text:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1887?!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bitch, then what the hell are they wearing?! Do these clothes look Victorian to you??? That sex worker is wearing beach shorts!
Listen, I’m in love with the 1970s fashion (not the shorts, though) but this is literally NOT THE TIME for it! Have you even seen men’s fashion (and hairstyles) from the 1880s?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Credit
And here’s a famous picture featuring male prostitues definitely NOT wearing beach shorts:
Tumblr media
Credit
We could have had it all, you guys.
I don’t know why this particular panel annoyed me so much. Not that they put too much effort in all the other time periods:
Tumblr media
This is supposed to be Renaissance Genoa.
Tumblr media
Why has Nicky had 20th century hairstyles before they were invented? Just grow your hair and curl it, Nicolo, what’s wrong with you? Also this:
Tumblr media
They’re clearly wearing stays (and very modern sleeves) while the woman is definitely in a curved corset. Is this the Tudor times or were Joe and Nicky too lazy to pad? How am I supposed to build a correct timeline for my historically accurate fanfiction???
Ok, I’m joking. The comic is good, please read it. Just... ignore the fashion 😂

I would suggest to anyone that is currently discussing Nicky's attitude in Tales through time to read Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood. Not only it is a fundamental insight in 1930s German society (though written by a foreigner), but it also dwells into the queer and pre-Nazi social context of the time: what this means is that it actually gives the reader an idea of how people reacted to the growing influence of the Nazi party in society, particularly of how that threat was perceived in queer circles. Flash news: what you'll find isn't the explicit and categorical condemnation that today (and rightly so!) is inflicted on the movement. People in the 1930s lacked the historical perspective that we have now: and what now is perceived by us as one of the darkest time in the history of Europe, for them was the increasingly difficult outcome of a number of historical occurrences, and the Nazi party was just one of the many preoccupations that interested the lives of German people, until it became (almost from one day to the next) the ruling party of a totalitarian dictatorship. The brilliance of this book is precisely in passing down the growing sense of uneasiness, uncertainty and fear that came before the disaster. And what it conveys is exactly this: the confusion of people that had found in Weimar Berlin a place of freedom and self-expression, and that are gradually and steadily deprived of this newfound liberty. In my view, while I wouldn't dare to compare Tales through time to Goodbye to Berlin, this was probably the intent of the comic as well. And in that sense, it makes perfectly sense to me that Nicky wouldn't immediately react to a Nazi's presence the way we would probably react today.
