ZelAme week: vacation
Didn't feel like doing a drawing for every single day this week so get another quick shitpost from me. Hopefully I'll be able to fully commit to Gourrina week.
Amelia is about to give Zel her "massage of justice".

I don't often participate in the shipping weeks because I suck at producing a lot of art in a short time, and also I've just been so burnt out, but I have a thing for wedding dresses. This one I designed myself after looking at a few others for inspiration. Hard to pin down what kind of dress Amelia should have, tbh, but I thought this looked good for a royal.

Slayers Pokémon Teams: Zelgadis Graywords
Alright, you know the drill team below this sentence and justifications below the chart.

Golem: I couldn’t resist giving Zel a Pokémon named Golem. It was too easy. Actually I was tempted to give him Golurk, but I figured that Golem fit better with the whole rock skin thing Zelgadis has going on. Actually, you’ll notice the first three Pokémon here represent the three ingredients that compose the crusty, chimeric crème brûlée that is Zelgadis.
Grimmsnarl: This one represents Zel’s blow (or is it brow?) demon aspect. There really aren’t many Pokémon I could call “demons” despite the dark type’s general existence, so I went with the next best thing. Plus the way Blow demons are designed make them sound kinda imp like.
Gallade: This ‘mon represents Zel’s human side, as well as his abilities as a swordsman.
Sigilyph: I chose this one since it’s a Pokémon which is known to dwell in temples and ruins, two of Zel’s favorite places to brood in and pillage. Also, the surprisingly wide move pool of elemental attacks can serve to represent Zel’s talent for Shamanistic magic.
Absol: This one represents Zel’s tendency to be a loner, a trait which fits with Absol’s isolationist tendencies, only showing up when shit’s about to go down. Also, it has emo hair, Zel has emo hair, match made in heaven.
Ferrothorn: This one also represents Zel’s personality, specifically his deadpan and figuratively prickly exterior. Though I suppose Zel’s exterior is also literally prickly since his hair’s made of wire. Come to think of it, is all of Zel’s hair wiry? Including the hair around his … lower regions? Ouch! No wonder he wants to find a cure so badly, that must hurt like hell, to say nothing of the inconvenience it would prove in the bedroom. Oh yeah, also Ferrothorn fits since it’s a fusion of organic and inorganic material like Zelgadis.

The Byronic Hero Bracket: Qualifying Round Batch D #13
Trafalgar Law from One Piece vs. Zelgadis Graywords from Slayers
Reasons under the cut (spoilers for both)
(All sources from TV Tropes)
Trafalgar Law:
Trafalgar Law from One Piece. He is very attractive when compared to most other One Piece characters, with more distinguished facial features like Shanks and Robin. He boasts enough charisma to gather a crew with 20 members. He is intelligent and cunning, having devised a plan over 13 years to bring down Doflamingo's empire and hamper an Emperor's plan to increase his power. He has experienced two great losses in his life: first his family, friends, and homeland of Flevance, then the father-figure to whom he owes his life. Eventually, everything adds up to him being able to avenge his fallen hero (with Luffy's help) and also have enough determination go on living afterwards.
Zelgadis Graywords:
Zelgadis Graywords from Slayers, more so in the anime than in the novels. His absolutely undeterred lifelong quest for a cure that could turn his chimeric body back into its former human state fits this trope, and toss in the fact that it was his own great-grandfather that did it.

Sorry. I had to choose my girl.
"Who is The Gayer Dragon?" Now, this is tough---not just because I've been obsessed with the Nimona 2023 movie since it released, and not just because I've been watching a bunch of Dungeon Meshi lately. But also because of this question. What is it really asking?
If we're talking about "gay" as in general queerness, encompassing any type of LGBTQIA+, then I'd have to go with Nimona. Though Falin and Marcille have been giving a lot of canonical source material that leads strongly towards a yuri interpretation (and I love that for them), it hasn't been canonically confirmed (as far as I know). I wish it was more than fanon, but I haven't heard of their ship being romantic canon. On the other hand, not only does the Nimona 2023 movie have queer interpretations, but the creator of the character/original comic is queer and has specifically stated that he created Nimona to express all the feelings he experienced while discovering his queerness. Nimona's creator pretty much said she is an expression of queerness. On top of that, the Nimona 2023 movie, clearly has very strong queer allegories, queer flag easter eggs, and interviews from their directors stating that they went into working on the movie with the comic's queer themes in mind ("'Nimona' | Scene at The Academy" by Oscars at 1:42/9:23 https://youtu.be/wW1IMMB8ZDY?si=4FDZgGeG8RHjPaiA) and intended to focus the movie's themes on Acceptance "pariticularly connected with the LGBTQ+ community" ("Nimona Directors Interview: The Shapeshifter Represents Anybody Who's Felt Misunderstood" by Collider Interviews at 5:19/7:48 https://youtu.be/jmpTRsdvy94?si=7dt3OpyHNterfWwX). Even the majority of the main characters are queer. That entire Nimona 2023 movie was queer, from Nimona as an individual character to the entire movie as a whole. In contrast, Dungeon Meshi isn't centered around queer themes, despite Falin/Facille having queer interpretations. While Falin and the Facille ship are very queer fanon (and I love it), NImona is queer canon, and that fact can't be denied.
Figuring out who is more of a "dragon" is also tricky because, what exactly is a "dragon"? As Overly Sarcastic Productions pointed out, "we categorize a lot of fundamentally different things as dragons." ("Trope Talk: Dragons" by Overly Sarcastic Productions at 12:17/17:56 https://youtu.be/3eXAPwjASEQ?si=Rd6Fia0LNrgb8Muf) "…'Dragon' has historically meant so many different things that it can't really have a rigid definition now. Dragons are everywhere because 'dragon' can mean almost anything sufficiently snakey and powerful that can't readily be categorized as anything else." ("Trope Talk: Dragons" by Overly Sarcastic Productions at 12:47/17:56 https://youtu.be/3eXAPwjASEQ?si=Rd6Fia0LNrgb8Muf)
Is Falin really a dragon in that hybrid human/ harpie/ dragon form? I had always heard other people describe that form of Falin as a "chimera". And indeed, it is a combination of multiple creatures (as the meaning of "chimera" has changed away from the specific Greek myth of only a lion-goat-snake mix). In modern day, "chimera" referrs to any mixture of different creatures into one. Zelgadis Graywords from Slayers called himself a chimera. Nina's dog form in Fullmetal Alchemist is specifically called a chimera. It seems like Falin's dragon/harpie/human form is more like a chimera than a dragon. But then again, even Overly Sarcastic Productions mentions "Mesopotamian dragons have bird wings and lion bodies." ("Trope Talk: Dragons" by Overly Sarcastic Productions at 12:23/17:56 https://youtu.be/3eXAPwjASEQ?si=Rd6Fia0LNrgb8Muf) So in broader definitions of "dragon", Falin's human/harpie/dragon form could still be called a "dragon". Again, the definition of "dragon" is actually very broad. The problem being that Dungeon Meshi itself had previously established, early on, what it's specific definition of "dragon" was, for its world. From episode one of Dungeon Meshi, the series portrayed their "Red Dragon" more like the stereotypical Western/European dragon. Dungeon Meshi itself seems to differentiate between a dragon and a chimera, by presenting a stereotypical dragon when they go hunting the Red Dragon. Falin's chimera form is very much not a "stereotypical dragon" as the series had established.
Still, if Falin's chimera form can be considered a "dragon", then she is as much a dragon as Nimona is. Nimona is as much a "dragon" as chimera-Falin is. Nimona is always described as a shape-shifter, but she also describes herself as whatever creature she has transformed into, at any given moment. Yes, she is a shape-shifter, but she is also a shark, a human, a cat, a bird, a rat, and Kwispy the Dragon. If Nimona fully identifies as whatever she has shape-shifted into, whether simultaneously maintaining her "shape-shifter" identity, or her current shape superseding her "shape-shifter" identity, then NImona has been fully a "dragon" much more than Falin has. Nimona has turned into Kwispy the Dragon for several minutes. And her shape was fully a dragon; not a mixture of several creatures that included a dragon.
If Dungeon Meshi is establishing its definition of "dragon" as the stereotypical Western/European dragon, then I think Dungeon Meshi itself is saying that chimera-Falin is not a dragon (but instead a chimera). If Nimona can simultaneously identify as a shape-shifter and a dragon, OR if her taking on a dragon's shape makes her a full dragon at that moment, then Nimona has been a dragon more than Falin has, in both amount of time and in physical shape.
Yeah…I think I'm going to have to say NImona is more of a "gay dragon" than Falin.
