"My long-held belief that Duke and Luke should not get along" <- could you please elaborate on this? I'm fond of both and I collect your thoughts and analyses like they're rare trading cards so I'm ready to be all 👀🫳🍿

First of all anon this might be my favourite ask ever, I've been dying to write my thoughts on these two so THANK YOU. Secondly my belief that Duke + Luke wouldn't get along actually stemmed from WFA, I was super annoyed with Luke giving Duke the pep talk in ep 76 because they have no relationship!!! Then I started thinking harder and realised they are a really interesting pair. In case anyone hasn't noticed I'm fond of giving Duke relationships where he's annoyed with the other person so 😭 this is very on brand.

The thing about Duke + Luke is they are, on the surface, similar - they are Black members of the Batfam who operate mostly independently, 'separate' from a legacy as Signal/Batwing (though I will deconstruct this later), devoted to their family, have a strong sense of justice, and view crime-fighting as a business. But I believe at their cores they are fundamental opposites - and it's this hidden opposition that makes me think they wouldn't vibe with each other. I'm focusing on We Are Robin Duke and Batwing Luke, though I will also refer to Duke's Signal days + Luke in Detective Comics.

(This is going to be a long post because this is lowkey my Luke + Duke thesis 😭)

Introductions

Duke and Luke were both introduced in the New 52, actually in the same year (2013!). What's really cool about their intros is that you already see how different they are. We first meet Duke in Zero Year, where he's fishing in the subway and then attacked by a gang; we then get the famous scene of him solving crosswords by Bruce's unconscious body. When Bruce tells Duke and his family to leave, Duke refuses, telling him they can't leave Duke's grandma and that all it takes is one riddle to free the city from Riddler's influence.

By contrast, we first meet Luke in the spotlight as he's wrestling for MMA in Batwing #19. He's been wrestling to get Batman's attention, refusing all job offers from his dad to do so (and thus creating some juicy father-son tension). In Batwing #20, we see he has two degrees from MIT, lives in a fancy apartment, and is really tech-oriented; his cover story for Batwing is that he's travelling the world.

Already, there are a couple things that already firmly separate them:

Class: Duke is from the Narrows whereas Luke is rich

Connection to Batman: Duke stumbled across Batman and gained his attention quite organically, whereas Luke was actively begging for Batman to notice him

Agency: Duke's actions were motivated by the extreme circumstances of Zero Year and a desire to help rooted in his material environment, whereas Luke's is a more internal, abstract wish to help (pointing to their class differences again)

Gotham: Duke refuses to leave his city, whereas Luke immediately packs up and travels the world

Intelligence: Both of them are fiercely intelligent, but in different ways - Duke loves puzzles and riddles whereas Luke is more inclined towards engineering and technology

And these differences only grow as they get older!!

Maturity

Duke is 16 (in my head, canonically it's vague but he's between Damian and Tim so 14-17) and Luke is 23. This age gap is honestly not that big, but I think it would feel big to both of them. And what's worse is that Duke is quite mature, but Luke is said to be immature:

Batwing #23

I don't think Luke is actually immature, but it's a recurring theme that other characters perceive him as unwilling to grow up; and I genuinely do think Batwing, for him, is kind of an adventure at first. Now compare this to Duke, whose circumstances disallowed him being childish. He had to grow up because his parents weren't around anymore, and he became quite jaded as a result. Even after he's mellowed out in his Signal days, I still don't think he could tolerate working with someone who comes off as light-hearted as Luke does. Duke would be annoyed by how he perceives Luke doesn't take things seriously, and Luke in turn would be annoyed when Duke inevitably criticises him for it.

Arc

Following on from above, their arcs are actually in total opposite directions. We first meet Duke alone and disillusioned with everything, putting his whole being into finding his parents. Then, through We Are Robin and Robin War, he begins to understand what Robin means as a symbol and finds community, leading to his brighter personality in Signal comics. Luke, however, begins very light-hearted (as seen above), with a huge respect for Batman and the Bat symbol. Once his family starts being torn apart, though, he becomes increasingly aggressive, more isolated, and in a much darker place. Compare a narration box from the last issues of both:

Batwing #34 / We Are Robin #12

These encapsulate their journeys: Duke learns that he doesn't have to act alone, whereas Luke struggles with accepting all that has happened since he put on his suit. Being a vigilante improves Duke's life, whereas it essentially ruins Luke's. This is why I don't think that WFA ep made sense!!! They have nothing in common in terms of the vigilante experience, and I think they would frustrate each other because they have such different conceptions of what the vigilante life is!!!!!!!

Batman and Robin

Okay so I said that Luke + Duke aren't legacies; even though Batwing is one, Luke doesn't actually talk to David Zavimbe, and his Batwing is not spiritually connected to David's really. But Luke and Duke both do take inspiration from other Batfam members - Batman and Robin, respectively.

Batwing #25 / Batman (2011) #45

Luke is the rare Batfam member whose motivations don't spring from tragedy - he's inspired one night when Batman saves him and he jumps in to help. Luke's love for Batman is wrapped up in Bruce himself, as a person rather than a symbol; he genuinely thinks Batman is awesome and wants to help people under his name.

Duke is the exact opposite - Robin is not a person for him but a symbol, and a symbol that can be spread to many people. It's also intimately tied with Duke's relationship to Gotham, because Batman is "on the gargoyle" and Robin is "on the street". Importantly, Duke says to Darryl that "I know you work for him, but you're us". Working for a singular person is in opposition to this 'us' that Duke believes in.

Luke, though not exactly an employee, literally wanted to work for Batman, Inc. Batwing is in many ways a 'job', an alternative to the corporate life Lucius wanted for him. Duke would, I think, take huge problems with Luke's philosophy as a whole. Separated from Gotham, attached to Batman as a person rather than as a symbol, Duke just literally wouldn't understand where Luke is coming from. And Luke, too, doesn't seem to respect Robin as a mantle (this is after someone mistakes him for Batman in Batwing #34):

I think Luke views Robin as firmly a kids' role, a sidekick for Batman; that would annoy the STUFFING out of Duke. I actually could write a whole post in itself about this incident and Luke being mistaken for Batman but that's for another day. The point is they are attached to the Batman and Robin legacies which in themselves are already vastly different, but Duke is kind of anti-Batman and Luke is a little anti-Robin, so they would not mix.

Family

One thing they do have in common is a deep love for family. But even then, their familial relationships are extremely different: Duke has a wonderful relationship with his parents, bolstered by the fact he lost them for a while, whereas Luke has a contentious relationship with his. Duke in some ways idealises his mom and dad, while Luke is sharply aware of his parents' shortcomings.

Batwing #20

Now this wouldn't be an issue normally, but Duke canonically has, like, a problem with judging other people's families. It's a really consistent (and somewhat hilarious) trait of his:

We Are Robin #5 / We Are Robin #5 / Gotham Nights #8

The Dre comment ("you're a mob kid?") is particularly telling. Because Duke has such a good relationship with his parents, and because he's shaped so much by them, I think he sees children as reflections of their parents/families. It's hard for him to see someone completely divorced from their family - you even see this a bit in Batman & The Outsiders, where although Duke understood Cass' disagreements with Shiva, I don't think he really got the nuances of what that felt like for Cass.

Luke's relationship with his father is complex and contentious. They love each other, but Lucius' desires for Luke just don't match what Luke wants, and Luke can't tell him about Batwing either so it's a constant back-and-forth. This secrecy is another thing Duke wouldn't get - I've made posts before about Duke and honesty, and it's a huge value of his. It's significant that as soon as his mom is healed she finds out about Signal; dishonesty is not really a factor in Duke's life, whereas it is Luke's central conflict. Luke's entire thing with his dad and his alter ego is something Duke has never had to deal with, and I think Duke would just be like 'tell him?? and make up??' and Luke would sigh so loud and hard.

Personality and Authority

But all of that aside, I just think their personalities wouldn't mix! Duke is a jaded teenager whose overt honesty and resistance to authority often give off a bad first impression (see his first encounters with Black Lightning, We Are Robin, Damian, even the Bruce train scene...). People do warm up to Duke quick, and once you love him you adore him, but there's a hurdle to becoming close to him that you have to leap first.

Luke, on the other hand, is affable and immediately likable. He's popular in school (as Russell mentions in #25), has experienced college social life, and is open and friendly. I think in an initial meeting Luke would find Duke off-putting and rude, while Duke would find Luke shallow and annoying. Luke is an extremely confident person, as shown in both Batwing and Detective Comics (particularly the latter). I think Duke would take this confidence as him being stuck-up, especially because Luke is rich.

Their class differences also separate their reactions to authority. Luke doesn't take authority at face value - he disobeys Bruce basically as much as Duke does. However, given his upbringing he isn't that anti-authority. Compare Luke and Duke's attitudes to cops:

Batwing #25 / We Are Robin #2

The Luke narration box is after the cops shoot him and accidentally make him kill his best friend 😭😭😭 like if that had happened to Duke his inner voice would NOT say that. This is another example of how their different upbringings and personalities cause them to have DRASTICALLY different outlooks on things. Batwing also sides with Batwoman when she kills Clayface in Detective Comics, something I think Duke would not do (he would've sided with Cass) so their ideologies often put them on opposite sides.

FINALLY, and least importantly, Luke is not a reader. This is a recurring thing and it's so funny:

Batwing #21

That's Tam telling Luke to "read a book". I think this exact interaction would happen with Duke taking the place of Tam, where he'd just be super annoyed that Luke doesn't enjoy literature. Honestly I think Duke might remind Luke of Tam in a lot of ways, since Duke is Bruce's golden child just like Tam is Lucius'. And that would annoy Luke, like he can't escape annoying younger siblings even as Batwing?? Bruce liking Duke more than Luke, even when Duke doesn't even care for Bruce's approval, would send Luke's blood pressure through the ROOF.

Conclusion

Um anyway I'm so so sorry this was so long but that's why I think Luke and Duke wouldn't get along!! It's mostly that they have such different outlooks on literally everything and their personalities clash. Anyway, if anyone bothered to read til the end here's your reward!! East Asian Age Reckoning "数え年（かぞえどし/Kazoe-doshi)"

In modern times, we Japanese also count our age in the same way as in the West, where we count our age on the day we are born as age zero, and turn one year old on our birthday one year later. This is called 満年齢（まんねんれい/Man-nenrei) in Japan.

In the old days, however, another way of counting age called "数え年（かぞえどし/Kazoe-doshi)" was used. In the time of KNH, 数え年(Kazoe-doshi) is probably used. Although it is not mentioned in the anime, in the original novel it is sometimes written as "～years old by 数え年(Kazoe-doshi)".

In this counting system, when you are born you are already 1 year old, and at the beginning of the next year, on January 1st, everyone turns one year older. In other words, your birthday doesn't matter at all.

If you were born on January 1, 2020, you were 1 year old on the day in 数え/Kazoe. (zero year old in 満/Man)

January 1, 2021... 2 years old in 数え/Kazoe (1 year old in 満/Man)

January 1, 2022... 3 years old in 数え/Kazoe (2 years old in 満/Man)

January 1, 2023... 4 years old in 数え/Kazoe (3 years old in 満/Man)

January 1, 2024... 5 years old in 数え/Kazoe (4 years old in 満/Man)

January 1, 2025... 6 years old in 数え/Kazoe (5 years old in 満/Man)

Since you were already 1 year old when you were born, you'll always be 1-2 years older in 数え/Kazoe than in 満/Man.

My son was actually born on December 31, 2009. In that case, he was already one year old on that day, and would have turned 2 years old on January 2010, just after 1 day...

In Season 1 Ep.20 "Thornapple", it was revealed that Jinshi the eunuch was set to be 24 years old, but was actually 19. If it was based on 数え/Kazoe counting way, if we convert to 満/Man, he came to the rear palace at the age of 12-13 only, and after 5 years he first met Maomao at 17-18...?

I've been trying not to think about this, because I found the age setting of Jinshi a little hard to believe, but above all, the age of the girls who were victims of the previous emperor, and the age at which Anshi became pregnant... could be even 1-2 years younger.

I'm not sure whether their age in the anime is based on 数え(Kazoe) or 満(Man), but I wish it would be 満(Man). Either way, the incidents by the former emperor is still gross, though...

Some more thoughts on Season 16 of Law and Order SVU.

I miss Munch, particularly his snarky exchanges with Fin, which brought some levity to the darker episodes. Those two together were comedy gold and such a great partnership.

I’ve enjoyed seeing Carisi working with Rollins, he is v respectful of her and lets her take the lead, and offers to work with her quite a few times, and openly admits to her that he still has a lot to learn about the job. 

It is refreshing to see a team where everyone works well together, as Fin complained whenever he was paired with Stabler, and I think Stabler was a bit annoyed at being paired with Munch a few times too. 

Loved seeing Barba as a son and grandson, actually getting emotional, as, up until that point, I had found him a bit cold/robotic. 

The way he held Noah was hysterical as well, like he was holding a bag of toxic waste! Should have called Stabler or Carisi instead, Liv!

Adored meeting Bella, Carisi’s sister. I liked how non-judgemental he was about her maybe not keeping her baby as he didn’t say anything but was just quietly supportive. Stabler would have been more vocal in his Catholic views, I believe, 

Sonny’s anger is always so righteous but I feel he is always in control of it, so even though he was rough with Tommy, he didn’t go too far and beat him to a pulp/hit him. 

He also has a lot of empathy for the victims and their families, just like Olivia does, and he connects with people very easily, like with the lawyer daughter in the Marcia Cross episode where her character is married to a writer with ailing health. 

I love that he’s told his family about Olivia is awesome and that he loves his job and working for her, that was a sweet moment! 

Also, good job to the casting directors for the actress who plays Bella, she and Peter Scanavino look like they could actually be siblings!

He also did an awesome job being undercover, and looked super hot with the gelled back hair and the glasses.

The episode with Amaro’s dad reminded me a lot of Stabler and his equally awful childhood. They are both really hot-headed and internalise everything until they take it out on their lockers. At least Amaro is going to Anger Management classes!

I liked seeing Amaro with his ex’s boy, who he considers to be his son. He is also a good dad to his daughter, so that has made me warm to him a little more, though I still don’t miss him if he’s not there! 

Just finished watching the serial killer who is a doctor who has committed crimes in Chicago, New York and elsewhere. He was terrifying in the courtroom scene, loved seeing Coroner Warner, she’s so great and one of my favourite minor characters. 

I now want to rewatch the ep he is in from somewhere between Season 5-8, as the passing of time on this show is Very Wonky ™! 

I am approaching the end of the Season, I think I will be getting Seasons 17 to present day too, even if they are in French and I have to deal with names being mispronounced ( Ezzer for Heather was particularly bad!).

I also googled the William Lewis scenario and it seems like I bypassed it and there is zero chance he will ever come back, as K could barely cope with reading about it let alone watch it!

ATEEZ’s Jieun to go on temporary hiatus due to health concerns

On January 21, ATEEZ’s agency, KQ Entertainment, released a statement updating fans about Jieun’s health following the idol’s collapse during a fansign on January 19. The agency shared that Jieun had been experiencing many symptoms of poor health and that ATEEZ would temporarily promote as eight members while she took time to recover.  

The full statement reads as follows: 

“Hello, this is KQ Entertainment. 

Firstly, we would like to apologize to fans who were surely worried about ATEEZ’s Jieun’s health and waited patiently for an update. 

Jieun was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder in her early childhood and received treatment to manage her symptoms. As she grew older and became more independent, Jieun found her anxiety easier to manage and thus believed further treatment was unnecessary. She continued through trainee life and debut promotions with minimal concerns.

Recently however, Jieun began experiencing similar psychological symptoms while ATEEZ prepared for the release of their second mini-album, but pushed on for the sake of not disappointing fans. This caused Jieun’s physical condition to decrease and resulted in the artist collapsing during the recent fansign on January 19. She was brought to the hospital right after, where doctors advised Jieun to rest and avoid strenuous activities that could further harm her body. The agency takes full responsibility for not more closely monitoring the well-being of its artists and apologizes for all those that were worried by the incident. 

After long discussions between ATEEZ, including Jieun, the artist’s family, and the agency, it was decided that Jieun would take a temporary hiatus while she focused on improving her health and continuing treatment for anxiety. 

ATEEZ will continue promotions with eight members for the time being. We will announce Jieun’s return to scheduled activities only when the artist and experts believe she is ready to return. The agency supports Jieun fully and will do our best to help the artist recover quickly. 

We ask that ATINY send their love and support to Jieun at this time.

October 2023 - part 1

October 1 - Travis is seen leaving Taylor's NYC apartment around 11am. Travis heads back to his hotel where the team is staying before his Chiefs vs Jets Game at MetLife Stadium

Taylor attends the Chiefs vs Jets game at MetLife Stadium, NJ, with Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Shawn Levy, Donna Kelce, Sophie Turner, Sabrina Carpenter, Brittany Mahomes, Melanie Nyema, Austin Swift & girlfriend Sydney Ness, Ashley Avignone, Robyn Lively, and more. The camera cut to Taylor approx. 17 times during the game and the Eras Tour film trailer played twice during ad breaks. Taylor was seen hugging Donna, saying "you're amazing, I don't know how you do it" when the score was 20-20. Taylor was also seen mimicking Travis. The NFL change their tiktok and twitter pages again to reference Taylor's attendance. Various media outlets post footage of Taylor at the game, Travis likes a post of Taylor's reaction to a Chiefs touchdown. The Chiefs won 23-20.

After the game, Taylor was pictured leaving Zero Bond in the early hours of October 2. (x)

October 3 - Taylor is at Electric Lady Studios, walking in with Keleigh Teller. Taylor's shirt is referencing the song 'Any Man of Mine' by Shania Twain, the first lyrics of which are (x)

When asked if she's surprised about the infatuation surrounding Taylor and Travis' relationship

"I feel like I'm in an alternate universe because it's something that I've never been involved with ever before," Donna said. 

The NFL release a statement in response to the New Heights podcast episode discussing the NFL "overdoing" coverage of Taylor at the Chiefs games, saying (x)

"The Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce news has been a pop cultural moment we've leaned into in real time, as it's an intersection of sport and entertainment, and we've seen an incredible amount of positivity around the sport."

October 6 - Travis speaks at a press conference. When asked about how he is adjusting to public interest in his relationship with Taylor, he says (x x)

"As all the attention comes, it feels like I was on top of the world after the Super Bowl and right now, even more on top of the world. So it's fun,"

“We’re learning with the paparazzi just taking photos from all over the place. But at the same time, it comes with it,” he continued. “You got a lot of people that care about Taylor for good reason. A report comes out stating that the NFL asked its networks to promote the Taylor Swift Eras Tour Film at the Chiefs vs Jets game, likely in a bid to get Taylor to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show. (x)

October 6 - Taylor reportedly flew to Kansas City "to see Travis" for his birthday to have a "chill night" (x). A sneaky little visit for Trav's birthday.

October 7 - Taylor leaves Kansas City.

Travis flies into Minnesota for the Chiefs vs Vikings game

October 8 - Travis plays in the Chiefs vs Vikings game in Minnesota. Travis injures his ankle during the game but after an x-ray he returns to the field and scores a touchdown. The Chiefs win 27-20 (x) (x) (x)

October 11 - Taylor is in LA for her Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Film premiere. She shuts down The Grove, LA to host a red carpet and early screening event with selected fans, wearing a very 1989-coded blue Oscar de la Renta dress.

agatha harkness, baby! i looooved wandavision - like, got up early every week to watch it while i worked out so i wouldn't get spoiled - and i loved agnes/agatha from the moment she popped into wanda's kitchen and started flirting her face off as a force of chaos. and then they added patti lupone, and then i started hearing rumours they were going to make agatha as canonically queer as we all knew she was? i was ready. (except for how i was not, actually, ready.)

17. ...the world-building aspect of the story I have the greatest admiration for.

hahahaaaaa not to cheap out on this one but it's absolutely the fact that agatha harkness is jolene. can't beat it.

19. ...one behind-the-scenes trivia fact I've learned somewhere and my thoughts on it.

oh my god, so daniel selon, the costume designer, recently posted that the shot of the coven flying in front of the moon was done with puppets and that blew my mind. check it out! they are so cool. i actually got to work a bit with a master puppeteer earlier this year (i realise that sounds like an innuendo but it is not) and so i am in awe of how much effort went into these. practical! magic!

2. ...why I do or don't ship them.

holy fuck i ship them like crazy. they are so fucked up. they have so much history. they are each the only person who could ever match the other's freak. jac schaeffer and the writers' room were like, who could stand up to agatha? oh, i know! death! and they were right. death broke all the rules of nature for agatha. how could i not??? and that's BEFORE getting into the knife thing. come on.

10. ...rate the level of stupid they reach in their pining.

absolutely zero. neither of them ever pine for the other. that would be ridiculous. death does not pine. and agatha simply has better things to do. rio definitely does not spend half her time keeping an ear out in hopes that agatha is going to suck another coven dry so rio can figure out where she is. agatha definitely did not dedicate herself to tracking down the book of the damned specifically so she could piss off rio by disappearing instead of dealing with her feelings. none pining. none. (1000000/10, they are both utter fools)

14. ...which tropes I think describe them the best.

hahaha iiiiiiis lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers a trope? (shhhhh they are going back to lovers shhhhh)

for agatha:

1 ...why I love them, like them or hate them.

where do i even begin. okay okay okay okay. i love her. to start with, i have a real pathological thing for characters who slap on as many masks as possible in order to avoid dealing with feelings, for absolutely no reason, thank you. and agatha is such a master manipulator and troll. i love how smart and calculating and incisive and determined she is. i love how greedy she is - for knowledge, for power. i love that she refuses to feel shame about her desires, or at least refuses to let any shame she feels stop her. i love that she does - grudgingly, unwillingly - make space for love in her life. i love that she's such a dick. i love that she has faced so much horror that she just refuses to take most things seriously because nothing else can be as bad. i love that she looks good in literally anything (except maybe that mobcap from ep 9, but to be fair that is playing on hard mode). i love her.

8. ...a headcanon I have about this character.

hmm, i don't know what i want to share that i either haven't already written about or don't plan to write about. let me think. oh, i know i wrote up a bunch of options, but i do believe she makes billy take señor scratchy home, hahaha.

for rio:

1 ...why I love them, like them or hate them.

do i love rio? i love agatha so much and i had to think about rio. do i just love rio because of how much she loves agatha? hm! i wish we had gotten so much more rio! i love that she cannot say no to agatha, hahahaaaaa. i love that she can't quite maintain her poker face when she's feeling strong emotions - the times she lets it slip are devastating. (i have to say, i have never much cared for aubrey plaza, but she has some great moments in this show.) i love her anger. i love that she is fair. i love that she's so petulant ('why don't you want me'). i talked about the scene with alice in another ask, but i love that rio takes a moment there to have a conversation with alice and to be like, actually, you fulfilled your life's meaning here. what more do you want. death isn't kind, but she is truthful, and i love that.

8. ...a headcanon I have about this character.

i absolutely believe that every time agatha kills someone, rio knows immediately.
