“Beggars can’t be choosers” quite literally strips us of our autonomy, boundaries, and ability to consent. It’s manipulative and disrespectful.

Beggars should be choosers. We know what we need. We know what does and doesn’t work for us. We know our bodies, our allergies, our comfort foods.

When I lived in a youth shelter, we regularly got “dump donations” of absolute garbage. There was someone who donated a box of dirty toothbrushes and rusty razor blades. Someone donated almost a dozen fully wooden underarm crutches. People would leave garbage bags filled with moldy food by the door. It’s unsafe and insulting.

Additionally, having lived in homeless encampments, when people just drop off their junk, it makes our encampment look dirty and unkempt, which makes it more likely to get swept and displace our community.

When all you have to wear is donated clothes, and every article of donated clothing is covered is stains, ripped, worn out, etc. it makes you look (to the rest of society) disgusting and unworthy of care and compassion. I saved up money while homeless to get thrifted “nice looking” clothes. I was wearing inappropriate clothing for the weather I was in, BUT I didn’t get kicked out of the warm cafe I could sit and sip a tea in for hours. I was able to use more public restrooms because I looked like a paying customer. People respected me more. I gained access to certain housed privileges like that.

I say this as someone who works at a nonprofit: the attitude “someone who has nothing will be grateful for anything” is harmful and dehumanizing when it’s used to justify donating something ripped, stained, or expired to someone less fortunate.

Homeless people deserve clothing with good structural integrity. Victims of house fires deserve linens that are free of stains. No one should have to eat expired food. It’s disrespectful to give people scraps when they’re already hurting.

Please, out of respect for your fellow humans, check the dates on your food donations before you drop them off.

ur so right ur so right like he's such an absolute sweetheart in every universe but as a uni student good God. I need uni Lighter in my life. like he'd be the slightly intimidating campus crush at first, true oomf material, but then u get paired in a project w him or talk to him at some party or find out you have friends in common and suddenly you're friends and figuring out he's actually so nice, just genuine and thoughtful and funny and kind, and it's kinda hard to not fall in love with him a little bit.

and ughhhh daily uni life with him would be so fun. getting groceries together, study dates at a café, movie marathons and late-night walks and stressing over deadlines and sharing gossip, like it'd all just be so Perfect with him. he's always up for shenanigans, he'll go to the random events like pottery painting and house plant sales that your uni organises with you every time just to keep you company because he knows you don't like going to them alone. ideal man.

As a tangent note, education-as-opportunity discourse is one of those things where another author (in this case Freddie deBoer) has already just said it all, so I feel a bit foolish repeating the points. For the record I guess, the idea of addressing inequality via "redistributive opportunity" in schools is a contradiction in terms, accepting as valid that say being a barista can never be a good job so we fix society by giving everyone the opportunity to be "better" than that. Which flies right in the face of the fact that society needs baristas and the number of baristas is not meaningfully going to shift via having "better schools" because people want coffee. Not only does the education system not exist, at all, to "fix" inequality, it is itself inherently unequal, concerned as is it with heterogeneous acquisitions of heterogeneously-valued human capital. And this is a trait inherent to education, not specifically a product of any given school system. You can't squeeze any blood out of this stone.

“Benefits” my ass.

These are mandatory forms for General Assistance, which pays for my rent, household needs ($45) and some food (100$).

I am disabled and have been fighting for SSI since 2017. Once I am eventually approved, I have to use my backpay to pay back a portion of this (about 1/3 of my backpay, my lawyer gets another 1/3, I get whats left).

In order to have housing (after YEARS of homelessness) I have to waive my rights to confidentiality for my own medical records.

Note that “phone bills” are misspent money. I am entirely reliant on someone else’s kindness to be on their phone plan. This had to be approved by my GA caseworker. I NEED a phone, not just for my dozens of appointments to manage my life threatening chronic health conditions and serious mental illnesses, but also to call the pharmacy, to call my landlord, DHHS, heating assistance programs, case management and therapy, AND, of course, for my monthly general assistance appointment. Yes. They REQUIRE me to have a phone AND I cannot pay for it. I have zero income since I’m unable to work anyways.

What happens if I “misuse” these theoretical funds? Federal prison time, a mandatory minimum of 1 year, PLUS disqualification of all government services for up to 5 years.

So yeah, “Benefits” my ass.

i think the most annoying part of amatonormativity is that not only do you NEED to feel love, and not only is there an order your relationships must follow (romantic/sexual partnership above all, then family, then friends) but the fact that other people HAVE to be your top priority. like even if you feel all kinds of attraction, if you dare put anything else above your relationships they consider you evil. god forbid you enjoy your hobbies more than being around your friends even though how much you care about something is completely outside of your control. it's the worst.
