Oh No! Here Comes Trouble (2023, Taiwan)

Mini-review:

I don't know why I put off watching this for so long, cause it's really good. It includes so much stuff that I love: laugh-out-loud comedy, heartbreaking stories, supernatural elements and, most of all, a bunch of characters that burrow their way into your heart. The dynamic they share, specially between Yiyong and Guangyan, is incredibly fun. I feel like I could spend hours and hours watching them doing whatever together. And that's exactly what puts this drama miles ahead of other similarly supernatural-themed stories: the character writing is so damn good that you don't even care about the show's flaws, like the weak CGI. It certainly helps that the entire cast does a fantastic job, with Tseng Jing Hua giving a particularly unforgettable perfomance as the main character. Oh No! Here Comes Trouble is exactly what I needed right now, and I hope we get to see these characters again in the future.

best cdramas I’ve watched since the last one of these posts in 2023 (and some I’m still looking forward to seeing)

A League of Nobleman (watch on WeTV VIP | watch on AppleTV | watch on Viki | watch on bilibili | watch on YouTube) Adapted from the novel "The Mystery of Zhang Guo" (张公案) by Da Feng Gua Guo (大风刮过) starring Jing BoRan, Song WeiLong, Hong Yao, Guo Cheng and Wang Duo. Definitely gay, but in like a very focused, we-have-a-mystery-to-solve way. Loved the acting and the plot; cannot believe people actually gave Song Weilong shit for his acting in this drama. He was aMAzing. The downside is that the editing grew progressively sloppier as the drama progressed, and although majority of the visuals were very satisfying, I never realized how crappy the quality of the light was until I tried gifing some of the scenes. The upside is Jing BoRan holding kittens. Enough Said. 7/10

The Blood of Youth (watch on Viki | watch on YouTube) Adapted from the novel "Shao Nian Ge Xing" (少年歌行) by Zhou Mu Nan (周木楠) starring Li HongYi, Liu XueYi and Ao RuiPeng. Love this goddamn drama. I adopted the entire cast within the first 3 episodes and then I spent the next 37 terrified that half of them would get killed off. There’s def some major character death in this drama my chickens, so keep that in mind (and not a canonical death either, from what I understand). Anyway, this is my fave genre by far so I’m never really picky, but this drama is exhilarating and gorgeous from beginning to end. Highly recommend. 9/10

New Life Begins (watch on iQIYI | watch on Viki | watch on YouTube) Adapted from the web novel "Qing Chuan Ri Chang" (清穿日常) by Duo Mu Mu Duo (多木木多) starring Bai JingTing and Tian XiWei. Just sweet and fluffy. The plot is easy and devoid of complexities, but very satisfying nonetheless. The acting is definitely on another level. The entire cast has bonkers chemistry, and it’s about time someone made good use of Bai Jingting’s comedy potential. One of the top 5 easy viewing dramas on my rewatch list.  8/10

The Legendary Life of Queen Lau (watch on Viki | watch on YouTube) Adapted from the web novel "Huang Hou Liu Hei Pang" (皇后刘黑胖) by Ge Yang (戈鞅) starring Li JiaQi and Li HongYi. Loved this. Although it doesn’t shy away from difficult subjects, this is basically a comedy from beginning to end. Not gonna lie, I mainly gave this a go for Li Hongyi, but it’s hard to even notice him when Li Jiaqi is in the room. There’s no shame in being overshadowed by superior talent :) 7/10

Under the Microscope (watch on Apple TV | watch on Bilibili | watch on iQIYI VIP | watch on Viki) Adapted from the novel "Xian Wei Jing Xia De Da Ming" (显微镜下的大明) by Ma Bo Yong (马伯庸) starring Zhang RuoYun and Wang Yang. Continuously impressed by Zhang RuoYun’s skills. This drama is 90% grit and tension. Drool-worthy visuals. Interesting plot. Sound mixing that gives me a Mo Ran style boner. Make your friends watch it and they will hate you. 9/10

Till The End of The Moon (watch on YouTube | watch on Apple TV | watch on Viki) Adapted from the web novel "Hei Yue Guang Na Wen BE Ju Ben" (黑月光拿稳BE剧本) by Teng Luo Wei Zhi (藤萝为枝). Starring Luo Yunxi and Bai Lu. This was so breathtakingly gorgeous. The chemistry between the actors, the visuals, the special effects, the costumes, everything is stunning in this drama. The romance is by no means original, but still manages to draw you in. Absolutely worth watching at least once. 8/10

Warriors Orochi Substitute Officers

When playing a battle as a character that is an ally in the battle, a generic officer will take their place. Substitute officer allocations were all over the place in Warriors Orochi Z, but in Warriors Orochi 3, efforts were made to standardise them. Such a shame Koei Tecmo got lazy and scrapped that system in Warriors Orochi 4.

Summary:

When he took his good friend Ren Zhen to the big temple to convert, he found that the Guanyin scroll in the temple had been stolen, so he volunteered to find the scroll. In the process of searching, he gradually learned that the secret of the scroll was the treasure map inside. Dalong and Afeng, who were used by the mysterious figure, shouldered the task of finding the treasure. The two sides fought wits and courage. When Dalong and Afeng found the treasure, the mysterious figure appeared. It turned out to be Master Hengyong who had been hiding in the temple for many years. The treasure was the golden hoop that Sun Sheng often mentioned in his dream. Sun Sheng struggled to get the scroll back. Ren Zhen called the police, and Sun Sheng took the golden hoop and took it up. Sun Sheng woke up and it turned out to be a dream.

oh, the things I'd do to you, Zhang "Raphael" Yong Cheng

"Hey Raph, race ya around the course once before we gotta dip?" a familiar voice rings across the now mostly quiet venue. 'Guests' to the meet have long driven off into the darkness of the late night, the only members still hanging around happening to be the crew and some close friends. As far as Raphael Zhang was aware, the only members still left were the other COREs and their arm-candies and Sawyer and Eric- both of whom have been cooped up in their cars since Danne raced earlier that night. Raphael himself couldn't even quite place what the point of coming was when all they were going to do was stay in their car. (Though perhaps the boy pitied Eric- the pharmaceutical student who often happened to be dragged out per Sawyer's request. He wasn't even all that interested in the racing life, if Raphael recalled.)

Turning to his buddy, the young man couldn't help but smile smugly in return, "You sure you're up for a bit of an ego-reduction tonight? You know I never lose." He sneers jokingly with a laugh that's half cut off into a gasp when his friend gives him a light shove away. "Did you just-"

"Yes, I did-"

Looking incredulous, the dual-tone haired boy simply gawks for a mere second, before turning to shove Atticus into the ground with a solid jostle of his own two hands firm against his best friend's chest. He ends up landing with a thud into the soft dirt, a low groan in protest.

"Oh, I'm so down to a race, no one just gets to push me around and get away with it." Raphael doesn't hold back the snicker as he towers over Atticus, only reaching out a hand to help his buddy up a few skipped moments later.

The moment falls quiet as Atticus grits his teeth, rubbing the back of his shoulder after painfully colliding with the ground beneath. "Fuck you," He hisses, though there is very little malice lacing his voice. In fact, he even goes as far as to take Raphael's hand in his- as if accepting his offer of help... only to give the other man a hard yank; allowing the boy to topple over his own body.

"Woah, hey-"

Strong arms catch Raphael's body before he crashes into the ground. And although the prodigy knew he'd always be in good hands with Atticus around, he couldn't help but to have squeezed his eyes shut tight- out of reflex, he would have claimed.

Still, when the hard crash and mouthful of dirt never comes, Raphael finds himself blinking his eyes open slowly, lashes fluttering in an attempt to re-orientate himself after the fall. Planting both of his palms into the ground beside Atticus' head, the young man finally realizes the compromising position they're in. With his lithe body hovering over Atticus' much larger, stronger one, and legs entangled thanks to the fall. The man beneath him never seems to falter, however, smirk ever the more wide with each passing minute. "Oops, my grip must have slipped."

"Slipped my ass, if anything I would have suspected you wanted for me to fuck you at this point." comes the sneer. Again, eyes are bright as they mockingly glare at one another, as if to size each other up, always interested in one-upping the mental scoreboard they've got going on. Atticus in how many newcomers he'd spooked in just the month alone, Raphael with how many races he'd won- except, the side competitions never seemed to dim either.

"No, I said Fuck you- as in I'd be the one doing the fucking, excuse you-"

"Ha, you wish. We both know you're just aching for me to have my way with you, aren't you?" Objectively, maybe Raph was being a little mean. Especially when the young man's daring enough to bring one of his hands to wrap lithe fingers around the base of Atticus' throat instead, offering him a little taunting squeeze before his friend could protest.

The reaction is almost immediate with the way Atticus briefly tips his head further into the soft ground, a gasp leaving his lips, eyes briefly slipping shut at the sudden assault. "Look at how subby you look, Kit. If I didn't know any better, I'd start believing that you'd enjoy being my little bitch."

The softest, prettiest of whimpers fall from Atticus' lips without his consent, but as soon as he realizes, he clamps his lips shut and only offers a glare of daggers towards his friend; who, of course, only possessed a grin growing wider by the passing minute.

As soon as Atticus finds the will to fight back, he makes a swift move to pull Raphael's hand away from him (-of which is met with almost no resistance) and almost tosses the other young man off of his body. He can't help but pout even as Raph rolls over and onto the ground with a laugh, reckless and free, "Oh fuck you, I can't believe you just pulled a stunt like that on me-"

"Raphael Zhang one, Atticus Han zero." Comes the sing-song.

"Shut the fuck up Raph-"

"You still up for that race, though?"

"I said shut up!"

"Oh, so you already were preparing for a loss tonight, regardless of how then, huh?"

"Raph, I swear to god-"

"Joking, joking! I guess I can let your pride live tonight."

(They still end up with a quick competition before they left the venue- Raphael won, of course.)

Cute, cheesy, predictable, fluffy, farfetched, cliche, basically everything you probably saw before that has a married contact / CEO ….yeah you know the type especially in a cdrama but with a twist 😉Seriously though, this is so worth the watch if you love romantic fluffy romcoms. The child in this is beyond adorable and for me steals almost every scene. Yes, the storyline is a bit outrageous, I mean the whole idea of a child psychologist ‘forced’ to marry to help a child because he wants her to become his mom…… yes it’s a bit 🤪 but you just kind of go along with it. The cast (especially the main leads cause oof) has phenomenal chemistry together which makes all the craziness a bit more forgivable. At least for me it did. This drama definitely won’t be for everyone.

best cdramas I’ve watched since the last one of these posts in 2021 (also some not so good + some upcoming)

I’ve been too busy to make lists, so I’m leaving out every drama I dropped

Luoyang (watch on iQIYI VIP) adapted from the novel of the same title by Ma Bo Yong (马伯庸), starring Huang Xuan, Wang Yibo, and Song Qian. The Longest Day in Chang'an vibes, but like, lighter and more colorful in every sense of the word. So many excellent female characters. Moves at a good clip for 39 episodes without stuttering. The cast is out of this world. 9/10

The Longest Day in Chang'an (watch on Amazon Prime | watch on Viki) starring Lei Jia Yin and Yi Yang Qian Xi. Fckn masterpiece. The cinematography in this thing is a joy to behold. Visually stunning. Not a drama you can glance at occasionally and still catch the threads. Had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. 10/10

Sword Snow Stride (watch on WeTV VIP | watch on Viki) based on the xuanhuan novel The Snowy Path of the Heroic Blade by 烽火戏诸侯 starring Zhang Ruoyun and Hu Jun. I have a soft spot for Zhang Ruoyun so I was gonna watch this to the end even if it sucked. Luckily, it didn’t. Still, it’s sort of a run-of-the-mill adventure journey story, where the hero always wins against all odds. It does a good job filling that empty hole in your life that Joy of Life left behind. The cast is stellar, and the plot stable enough for enjoyment. 7/10

The Long Ballad (watch on Viki |  watch on YouTube) based on wuxia manhua by 夏达 starring Dilraba Dilmurat and Wu Lei. Dilraba Dilmurat is a fckn goddess. Not gonna lie, I watched this whole thing just for her. I’m not particularly crazy about Wu Lei as an actor, but he was amazing in this role. The plot meanders occasionally, and there are some episodes I’ve watched at 1.25 speed. Still, one of the better romances out there. 7/10

Marvelous Women (watch on Viki) starring Jiang Qinqin and Zhang Huiwen. This was glorious in every sense of the word. So many brilliant women. So many brainless men. In-depth study of duty, honor, loyalty and love. I laughed, I cried, I lay on the floor and stared at the ceiling. Beautiful story, exquisitely told. 10/10

The Theatre Stories (watch on iQIYI VIP) starring  Qin Kaixuan and Zhao Xiaotang. Fun, lighthearted joy of a story. The best comedy I’ve seen all year. Love it to fckn pieces. 9/10

Honorable Mentions

The Story of MingLan (watch on iQIYI VIP | watch on Viki | watch on YouTube) adapted from the novel of the same title by Guan Xin Ze Luan (关心则乱), starring Zhao Liying, Feng Shaofeng, and Zhu Yilong. Cao Cuifen is also in this, for those who fckn adore this woman as much as I do. First of all, Zhao Liying is magic on screen, regardless of the role. The romance in this doesn’t meander, even if the other story lines occasionally do. First two thirds were very enjoyable. Last third I could’ve done without. I believe I called this drama “the terrible, wonderful lives of women,” and I still hold to that. 6/10

The Legend of Condor Heroes (2017) (watch on iQIYI VIP) starring Li Yitong and Yang Xuwen. Meng Ziyi is also in this adaptation. 4/10
