scent of the day: snowy owl (zoologist)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i'm new to zoologist scents, and i have three of them to sample, so i decided to start with the one that looked the most unusual. snowy owl promises to depict its namesake animal's habitat, and it seems to be somewhat divisive for its earthy, 'dirty' profile. i get that; it does smell like revolved soil on a cold day, just above freezing. there is a big blast of calone in the first wafts, though, and calone to me is the quintessential 90s mass-market watery-cucumber scent, which somewhat breaks my suspension of disbelief when it comes to this scent. nevertheless, the bitter greens and mint are doing a lot of heavy lifting to sell the ambiance, and in the end they pull it off.
as the top notes fade, a subtle creaminess comes in: the coconut rounds out the scent, without taking the spotlight for itself. it somehow does not steer this arctic composition even slightly towards tropical territory, but instead provides a counterpoint to the cold green opening. the animalic, hay-like base is evocative and not unpleasant, but it is faint on my skin. herbal, icy, earthy, soft - definitely an experiential scent and an artistic creation. i can picture a nest made of moss amid dirty snow and cold air. whether that's something i'd actually want to smell like, i'm not so sure.

Zoologist Snowy Owl This is like both fresh and cozy at the same time, chilly and warming at the same time. I get mostly fresh lily-of-the-valley and snowdrops. Coconut is also prominent - I usually dislike coconut but in this mix it's really nice, it's a softer coconut. And something earthy - there's a bunch of herbs and resins in the notes that I don't really know the smell of but it's sooo cosy!!

my wife bought me a HUGE sample box from Zoologist for my birthday and i’m nerding out sooo hard for these perfumes. i tried bat and snowy owl yesterday, and both were a fuckin experience. snowy owl smells like a cold winter night in a snowy forest. even the mint gives that slight burn of crisp frigid air.
i’m wearing bee today and it’s like i’m eating raw honey combs under a blossoming orange tree in spring. i didn’t know perfumes could be like this and tbh i foresee the beginnings of an expensive hobby

my personal choices for what i'd like to wear in general for each season (excluding holidays or something, just everyday wear).
winter - snowy owl is the perfect cold smell. it smells exactly like the crisp air of a cold forest which i love and it will definitely be my go-to for a winter smell outside of when i want to smell festive
spring - already talked about just a second ago, but colonia c.l.u.b. just makes sense in spring to me. it's sharp, clean, and a little herbal. i have other fragrances that could apply here too, but c.l.u.b. has a special place in my heart and i use it a lot especially around spring
summer - i spent a lot of summers in tillamook oregon on camping grounds. cape heartache was made by someone in the portland oregon area, and it really evokes that summer in the PNW feeling for me. it's nostalgic, earthy, woody, and i love it for summer! maybe a biased pick for me just based off of my summer association but whatever.
i would also pick blu meditterano by acqua di parma though it's a really good bright citrusy in the summer sun scent if i want something lest foresty and also loved by me
fall - jazz club is one of my favorite smells like ever. the tobacco and the warm spice just makes me think of fall, when things are starting to get cold but not too bad just yet. it feels like a warm hug from someone who smells a little smoky in a good way and idk why i associate it with fall but i do :3 tiger by zoologist would be another pick of mine just out of what i own right now though

Zoologist Snowy Owl

Zoologist Snowy Owl
Nose: Dawn Spencer Hurwitz
calone, mint, coconut, lily of the valley; snowdrops, iris, mate, galbanum, olibanum, white rose; musk, vanilla, oakmoss, synthetic civet, cedar, ambrette, tonka
Snowy Owl opens with chilly, rooty iris, like in Iris Silver Mist and Racine Carree.
I also get a (very fake, taffy-like)coconut note and lots of swimming-pool-like “aquatic” calone. This whole accord is “snowy” white, yes, but it’s also shrill and off-putting.
it dries down quickly to iris-calone. cold, white, powdery, highly synthetic and sterile, not pleasant in my book.
Snowy Owl is a dud IMO. everything it does is done better elsewhere; Tom Ford Soleil Neige is a better “smells like snow”, and there are tons of better iris options.

Ok, so I don't remember if it was me or you, but remember that post about Harry and Ron opening an owl shop and Pig being their mascot? You think you can make some cute headcanons about the boys just owning the shop together? Idk
I think that might have been an ask sent to you at some point, but -yeah- I’ll be happy to conjure up some ideas! Hope you like these!
 ~~~~~~~~
Ron had been getting sick of working at WWW. Sure, he enjoyed it, but the business was booming so much that he honestly didn’t think he could contribute anything else to it. Which is when he began to notice an old shop in Diagon Alley with a ‘for sale’ sign; it was where an Owl shop had been, and Ron remembered peeking through the enormous shop window as a child on family visits to the Alley.
He mentioned this when he got home to Harry, and –over dinner- he had reminisced about how he had always looked forward to looking at the various Owls, even if he never had any money to buy them. Harry smiled, watching as the redhead got that sweet look in his eye that he always had when discussing things that wouldn’t seem important to most people but were important to him.
A few weeks later, Ron noticed that the ‘for sale’ sign had been replaced with a  ‘sold’ sign, and he smiled forlornly. He imagined the new owners wouldn’t keep it as an Owl shop anymore. A real shame, he thought.
When he got home, he mentioned this to Harry, who grinned knowingly at him, before pulling out a certificate for the deed of the Owl shop. He had bought it that morning.
‘What? Harry, that’s so expensive; why would you⸺?’
‘I’ve got more money than I’m ever gonna spend. And you were saying that you felt bored at WWW; how about we run this Owl shop together?’
Ron threw his arms around the bespectacled man, and hugged him.
The next morning, they began the organisation for the shops re-opening. Luna -of course- was eager to help with procuring the owls themselves, which was great, considering her connections to various other zoologists in the wizarding world. Hermione sorted out the business end of things, including the incredibly important (but incredibly dull) regulations about wizarding retail. George popped in occasionally to suggest merchandising ideas, and Neville and Ginny were always turning up with moral support and snacks.
On the grand opening, Ron kissed Harry on the cheek, which (inevitably) made the front page of ‘Witch Weekly’. Harry later had it framed in the back room of the shop.
While they are both co-owners, it’s always been Ron’s shop. Which Harry has no problems with; he loves seeing the redhead excitedly creating new displays, interacting with the customers, and nurturing each owl that comes their way.
Although none were ever replace Hedwig in his mind, Harry does have a particular fondness for snowy owls. Ron understands this, and has a special offer on snowy owls each July as a result.
Harry often ends up causing lines to the till because he keeps getting distracted by Ron (especially when the redhead is sweeping his long ginger locks out of his eyes). Funnily enough, the customers never complain about this, possibly because of how sweet they think Harry is about Ron.
On the fifth anniversary of the shops grand opening, Ron and Harry organised a party for their friends and relatives, held in the shop after closing time. After several rounds of cake and ‘congratulations’, it was just Harry and Ron left alone in the shop. Harry heard the sound of Ron closing the till, and turned.
To find the redhead down on one knee, extending a simple (but beautiful) engagement ring.
Harry said yes.
~~~~~~ Hope you liked those, @booigi-boi! So sorry about the late response!

have you tried any zoologist scents?
i have!
zoologist cow
zoologist harvest mouse
zoologist snowy owl
overall i think their fragrances are conceptually cool but the quality level is what i'd expect from an indie oil perfumery like bpal or alkemia (maybe less polished than those brands, tbh, more like hexennacht; no shade to hexennacht, just my experience), not a brand selling at a niche / luxury price point. maybe i just haven't found the one zoologist scent that clicked for me, but i don't think i'd ever buy a full bottle of their perfumes. snowy owl was the most interesting to me, but it's not exactly a crowd pleaser, more of an atmospheric experience.

Hi! I just ordered a few samples from the perfumed court based on your scent of the day reviews. I've never tried perfumes before and I'm so excited for them to come in! Unfortunately they were out of stock of the parfums de marly athalia, which really piqued my interest. Do you have any recommendations for other scents that feel somber? Bonus points if it's androgynous, but femme is good too! I hope your week gets better, wishing you good health and a bit of gentleness <3
(and if you're interested, here are the scents I ordered: Diptyque L'Ombre EDP, Lolita Lempicka, Yves Libre, Zoologist Harvest Mouse, and Le Labo The Matcha)
excelent choices! please let me know what you think of them when they arrive, i hope you'll love them!
sadly the perfumed court doesn't always carry all scents from every line, i got my parfum de marly samples directly from the brand's website (they offer a sample kit that then gives you a discount if you want to order a full bottle). for pdm that's what i'd recommend doing!
somber scents... it will depend on the sort of shadows you prefer. guerlain's l'heure bleue is pensive and melancholy, but not yet fully dark. fallen by bpal is the heavy air before a storm. event horizon and anathema (also by bpal) are similarly stormy. the former leans ecclesiastic, the latter floral. deadly nightshade by alkemia is trad goth elegance. autumn vibes by maison martin margiela is a november walk on soggy leaves, on a day without sunlight. zoologist snowy owl is the same, only in midwinter, with the leaves now frozen deep under snow. these are all very different, but all have a somber mood to them in my opinion.
if you want something more in line with athalia's vintage powdery florals, go with l'heure bleue or the earlier entries in the list; the last two are more androgynous, esoteric interpretations.

i saw you have a few zoologist perfumes on fragrantica and i wanted to know your opinion on fragrances from that house in general! ( thinking abt ordering from them :3c )
honestly i really really like zoologist
im a furry and i love animals in general so maybe im a bit biased BUT it's not just because of the animal themes even if that's what caught my eye originally! they're not afraid to be artistic even at the cost of making more brave and controversial fragrances and i respect it
i absolutely recommend getting samples first and foremost, even for the ones that a lot of people insist are safe buys and more wearable. for example i hated chameleon even though it's seen as one of the best zoologist fragrances for the average person LOL but i really liked others!
their longevity is amazing, they last pretty much all day and don't require a lot of resprays (just spray them on your pulse points - wrist, neck, and inside elbow and you're good).
they're really different from each other tbh...like snowy owl is sooo different from t-rex LOL. get some samples! :) they come in such cute cards with a whole story blurb 💖 they're expensive and although some of them are worth it, id be pissed if i spent $200+ on a full body of chameleon
