Here is a WIP from a fic that I started writing for something but had to put on hold for now. If you remember this poll from a bit back, it was for this fic!

“You got it?” Blinking the literal stars from his vision, Ingo realized Akari was leaning over the fencepost, staring back down at him, and Rei was holding his hat out to him – it must have been knocked off.

“...I ah, appreciate the offer Miss Akari, but I believe I can handle it.” He brushed the dirt off of his coat as he got back to his feet, his tone somewhat betraying the determined resolve in his expression. “The route may be a bit more rough than anticipated, but even when some passengers cause more of a disturbance than others, I always ensure they reach their intended destination. I have yet to report a permanent derailment, and I intend to keep it that way.”

Receiving his hat back from Rei’s outstretched hand, Ingo situated it back on his head, before casting a glance back at Zoroark, standing hunched on the battlefield. Lips were pulled back to expose gnarled teeth in a display that would have suggested aggression at first glance. But beneath his undulating wisps of fur, his eyes were crinkled in unmistakable amusement.

The gangly pale creature actually seemed to be laughing at him.

Zisu’s zoroark was not unlike his wild kin out in the icelands. He was just as unpredictable as every other living spectre he’d encountered. Just as intimidating. Just as viscerally connected to the ingrained disposition the entirety of his species seemed to act on.

Except, the rest of his species used it to fuel their vicious actions, fully leaning into a dangerously aggressive hostility.

Zisu’s Zoroark, it appeared, simply resigned himself to being petty.

Tiny Valiant and Valor Comic

This takes place before Valiant had his Zoroark form.

aaaah. man. anyone remember that discussion a while back abt how ingo and h.zor have a lot in common actually.

like, i think it'd make total sense actually for him to become a zorua were he to die on mount coronet rather than being found by the pearl clan. but at the same time, i also think it might make sense for him to not become a hostile one. because h.zorua/zoroark are broadly said to be unilaterally malicious towards humans, but they're also the product of a terminal abandonment by the world, and their malice comes from resentment over that fate. and ingo... was abandoned on mount coronet, in a sense. lost and alone completely removed from anything he could call a home or that held any safety or comfort.

but unlike the zorua in canon, it wasn't an abandonment with a face to it? there was no direct hatred or fear, nothing said begone, monster, etc. he might not even remember why it happened. all he knows is he's suddenly alone.

so like. malice. possibly? but it can't really be a resentment specifically towards humans, can it, so much as it would be just a general grudge against the universe. and that's if it exists at all and he isn't just sort of... constantly mourning himself, which is the other option.

alternately: he retains knowledge of how it happened somehow, and reincarnates as a zorua who doesn't hate people but really really specifically wants to fucking kill god. that would be fun.

what the fuck does N's zorua in driftveil just come like. Inbuilt guaranteed with goated IVs (Every single one between 28-30???) or did i actually get sigma lucky just now. Well either way we take those . my lack of a dark type this far has made every single sigilyph encounter one where i fear for my life so . Yeah nice to have a psychic immunity finally

Akari disappears not long after Ingo does. Her friends look for her, of course, but fail to locate her. Irida is the one to approach Rei while he's in the Icelands one day, asking if he'd seen Akari recently. When he admits he hasn't her expression crumples and she tells him that Lady Sneasler had informed her something was wrong with Akari but Irida hadn't been able to locate the human-zoroark to find out what, and had been hoping she'd been in Jubilife Village since Ingo had vanished. Sneasler has no way to communicate what has happened to Akari besides what everyone already knows- that she's a Zoroark.

It's Cogita who finds Akari many weeks later, feral and enraged. Were the heavens still opened she'd have thought the girl was frenzied with her aggressive behavior. There are new injuries on her and she's absolutely filthy, but Cogita sees beyond the blanket protection of ferality. She sees the distraught and fear behind the blank Zoroark glare and she mourns for the girl she jokingly called her granddaughter. Rather than running she approaches, risking injury to touch the girl with softness despite her threat to lash out. Rather than attack Akari freezes and then slumps onto the woman, warbling out her father's name.

Cogita tries to provide comfort when someone catches her attention- Ingo himself, hauling at speed towards them. There's someone behind him but that person doesn't matter. Akari looks miserable, not having heard the destruction of snow behind her, and Cogita turns her to face Ingo. The Zoroark freezes in shock before running gleefully to her father, leaping upon him and burying her face in his neck, her form fluctuating between Zoroark and human in her glee. She freezes when footsteps approach them, tensing her grip on Ingo. He only smiles at the man- the man who shares his face. Akari should be happy but she's fearful instead.

What does this mean? Who is this man?

He greets her gently, and Akari thinks that if her father is smiling and happy to see him, not trying to remove her... maybe she can be happy is well.
