Do former Lord Presidents still have a connection to the Matrix?

🧠 Basic Connection

From their Academy days onward, all Time Lords are automatically connected to the Matrix. Their experiences, thoughts, and unconscious impressions are continually uploaded through a biological link like a Time Lord Wikipedia. Lord Presidents, however, enjoy an even deeper connection: political authority grants them direct access privileges. Certain artefacts and processes literally change the biodata of the new Lord President to give them access to a whole bunch of secrets. We can't conclude whether these Matrix privileges or biodata changes get revoked when they lose power, but let's face it, this is Gallifrey, so they probably stay.

🪦 After Death: The Matrix Lords

When Time Lords die, their minds are absorbed fully into the Matrix, forming part of its "stored consciousness" collective. For some Presidents/other important people, their personalities and memories are preserved in the system indefinitely, joining the unofficially official club of "Matrix Lords" — a committee of influential dead Time Lords who can still influence events.

Rassilon himself was part of this extremely exclusive club, of course.

How would the Matrix connection have affected the Doctor when Gallifrey was destroyed?

🔥 Psychic Fallout

Every Time Lord, living or dead, has a biodata link to the Matrix, and because the Doctor was Lord President, that link would have been deeply entrenched. If Gallifrey were truly destroyed, the collapse of the Matrix would have violently torn through those links.

The Doctor would have probably suffered psychic backlash: sudden severance, informational overload, lost memories, or even temporary damage to their ability to perceive time. (Arguably, this could partially explain some of his post-Time War instability.)

🧹 Loss of Resources

The Matrix isn't just a glorified backup drive — it's a powerful tool. Access to ancestral memories and hidden political secrets: all that would have been lost to the Doctor when Gallifrey fell. Their sense of connection to Gallifrey, culturally and biologically, would have been shattered alongside it.

In effect, they'd go from being a plugged-in superuser to someone holding a very broken, smoking USB stick.

🌌 Alternate Outcomes

Of course, if Gallifrey had been preserved in a pocket universe, the Matrix—and, by extension, the Doctor's link—might've remained dormant but intact. That explains why, much later, Twelve can still access it under the Capitol.

But immediately after the Time War from the Doctor's perspective, he would have felt Gallifrey die.

Warning; my mythology might be rusty so I'm taking the most current popular version of the myth of medusa, not everything will be accurate.

To love the damned and cursed

To be blind is to follow life as it flows through your fingers and ears. To look without sight, to feel every crevice and to love every natural dip every item and person shows you. To hear is to love the life you live, the waterflow nearby in his forest signifies life but as well a source of hydration, it's where you wash, where you drink, the water you cook with. The same water other animals use to survive just as you and your partner.

Human life has always been hard if not for the fact you had lost your sight in an accident, having been successfully blinded and disowned from your family. If you couldn't work for the communal bread, you were of no longer use. A thing taking up space and resources they already barely had any of.

It's by chance you met him, walking alone in the forest with dirt covering you from toe to head. He didn't take pity on you, instead opening his home to the only person who might ever rely on him. The only person who needs a cursed man as he is. That's what Hobie has told you multiple times, you give his life meaning again. His scales are soft and rigid to the touch, his arms are warm, his tail hugs and squeezes you to reassure you when you can only pity yourself and him. The snakes that constitute his hair are friendly and loving, they adore sneaking in your hair, feeling your caresses and small kisses upon them. Both him and them feel more cherished than they ever have before, you are their source of warmth, their comfort and love.

As you walk around in the forest, having left the cave, worried about your second half as he had yet to come back from recollecting water for your home, you approach the river slowly.

Life seems more still than usual. No creature makes a sound, you cannot hear any lapping of water or their calls. The wind is hauntingly cool this evening, and as you walk, having measured and adapted to know your path after all this time, you slam into a new of his stone sculptures.

You had believed you had mapped every previous location, and so this one ought to be new, fresher. Scrambling on your knees you reach out for it, practically crawling to find something to hold. You slowly feel the lines and dip of this new sculpture, the body feels familiar. You tentatively feel up to its face, recalling every dip and curve of its shape as you can only realize it's the man you love. Someone defeated him, his expression is telling enough, he's petrified and surprised. His eyes deeply saddened with the way his eyelids dip down. You slowly crumble onto the statue, begging for him to come back to you as you try to cry, your deeply scared eye sockets not even being able to give you this one last final thing. You whisper, shout, scream. You feel at his hair, the snakes that were once so alive and loving to you are but stone. He isn't any longer. Medusa was defeated, your yet to ever be husband...petrified and solidified in place. In front of the river you both so dearly loved once. The place now a graveyard, his resting place if the gods would even allow him that.
