hey y’all, i was hoping to remain anonymous, but i posted this on my main and would love for y’all to check out this post and interact with it as much as you can!
hello all! a little different of a post than my usual stuff, but i need a favour:
i am writing a cartoon, it’s an indie thing, there’s only me on the project right now, but i need a co-writer.
i don’t want to give too much away in terms of the project and the plot, but it’s got magic, somewhat inspired by gravity falls, owl house, monster prom, hilda, the carmilla webseries, craig of the creek, and old tall fairy and folk tales. it’s called Arcane Antiques, and will feature a queer, bipoc, and disabled of characters from all kinds of backgrounds. and if that isn’t enough, there is a living non-binary mannequin witch who is totally goofy and grumpy and casts spells via ASL. if that doesn’t sell this pitch, i don’t know what will.
if this sounds like your cup of tea, or you know someone else who might he interested in helping me write this, please spread this as far as you can! i would love to get more people on board. i will also be posting soon about voice actors and artists, so stay tuned for that or feel free to message me now if you’d like to be involved early.
thanks in advance! have an absolutely magical time!

i’ve always disliked remakes and reboots but never really understood why they make me so upset? i can’t believe i never got it till now, but it took the new mean girls debacle for me to piece it together (and only because of how people complained) but a good remake/reboot should be able to stand on its own without using the original for clout. it should tell a new story or a new twist while still respecting source material. and shouldn’t be a complete departure but should still be reasonably new. like it should be worth telling, that’s kinda the whole point.
reboots, as they stand right now, are not worth telling. right now, my sister is rewatching the live action Aladdin, and if the original didn’t exist, this film would be nothing but forgetful. like it doesn’t have any real heart or meat, it’s just kind of… bland. it feels (from both a story and a cinematic standpoint) repetitive and overdone.
given what i’ve said about what a good remake should be, it’s kinda easy to say that remakes (at least in such abundance) aren’t really all that worth it. and honestly, yeah. they kinda aren’t. but because they do exist in tandem with the original, they’re always gonna bring in cash.
however, my example was kinda unfair. Aladdin’s remake is forgettable and bland, but I’d argue it could be very worth retelling. if told correctly, that is. sure the og is a classic but it was also written by racists, sooooo… yeah. anyway, the new film did try to make some changes and liven things up. it just didn’t do a good job. but given more time, more effort, more love and dedication, it really could have been good. and it would’ve been a lot more interesting to see Aladdin treated with a leeeeetle more class than the original.

I guess the moral of the story is that can openers change but the size of the cans don't?
Antique can openers (still not sure why he thought the 1920's one wouldn't work that well considering it's the same design we use today)

Scrolling on Tubi is like...
Movie number one, Pi-tree Dish:
In the distant future, humans have evolved into trees in order to deal with the increasing CO2 in the atmosphere. When aliens from a desolate planet come to Earth, they kidnap the Oak King and his daughter. It’s up to the only human man left on Earth to bring them back alive. But can he succeed when even his own people don’t accept him?
Movie number two, Life is a Highway:
Danny “Shrooms” Libido must stop an evil NASCAR scientist from using special technology to harness innocent souls and trap them in cars as enslavement.
Movie number three, The Matrix Brie-Loaded:
An office clerk awakens one day in her cubicle to find that the entire state of Wisconsin is trapped in a simulation as part of an elaborate plot to turn humans into cheese.
Movie number four, Seamen:
Herculina, a disgruntled cop from Boston, is tasked with guarding the last two members of a near-extinct aquatic species, but must overcome her fear of water when a descendant of Captain Ahab attempts to kidnap the creatures from their enclosure.
Movie number five, Extinction:
The year is 2157 and robots have run rampant across NYC. Only one group of people block the path between these monsters and the extinction of all humanity.

The amount of movies and television shows that I watched as a kid that played mens' SA for laughs is truly appalling and it took the 2004 Thunderbirds film to make me realize just how many times I've seen this trope...

Haven't heard people really talk about this, other than complaining about that one moment in Revenge Party, but personally I hated the cinematography in Mean Girls (2024).
My main issue was the TikTok lighting and the emptiness of every shot.
For one thing, in terms of TikTok lighting, I guess it's just something I have to get used to in film. Netflix has been using it for a bit now in terms of films like He's All That. It rubs me the wrong way because it feels cringey (at least for me personally), but aside from that I can't really give constructive criticism, it's just a "me-issue".
In terms of the emptiness, I can actually offer an explanation as to why that bothers me. American high schools, or honestly, most high schools, are busy places. You've got students running around, busy hallways, teachers chatting this way and that and shaking salads and talking through bites, vice principles wandering and yelling, kids getting dragged out of bathrooms for vaping, smoking, or drugs or sexual acts. School is busy! And I don't see that anywhere in the 30 or so minutes that I managed to complete before exiting the film. It genuinely feels so jarring.
There's little to nothing in the background, the foreground, or anywhere quite frankly. The students are all incredibly spaced out as if there are no cliques other than the Plastics or whatever other groups are mentioned in the introductory cafeteria scene. AND SPEAKING OF CAFETERIAS!!! The cafeteria is so empty?? Like it's genuinely insane how empty it is. The tables are so small and minimalistic, like you can fit five people tops. There's no decorations on the walls, no flags, no posters, nothing.
Now I understand minimalism as a design choice in certain films. There are whole subsets of genres that thrive on this design choice. Clean Space, for example, as a Sci-Fi aesthetic. It's built on minimalism, it wouldn't exist without it. But, in terms of describing a busy high school? Maybe it's just me, but I don't feel that it fits. It doesn't make sense to me as a design choice.
Anyways. The film has its issues for sure, but overall, it is camp, and Renee is mother. Also the Letterboxd reviews are so funny I cannot express that enough! And despite the bad camera angle during Revenge Party, you have to admit it's worth a good chuckle. Not to mention John Hamm teaching sex ed, like honestly I didn't care for the jokes that much but the concept is hilarious.

Cartoon rec of the week:
Craig of the Creek
I haven't seen enough people talking about the show, so I'm mentioning it here. Absolute 10/10 cartoon. Just three kids, running 'round, making friends, running their own semi-sustainable community in the forest (there are some concerns about how much trash they leave there but ultimately they're better than most adults). Literally such a dream. they encourage each other to be emotionally healthy and they protect each other from "danger". Like they'll help each other achieve their dreams as they come (and new dreams show up pretty often because they're young kids).
And they're so funny! Like genuinely these kids are so earnest and intelligent and incredibly humorous and full of heart! They have full lives and they live them to the fullest out in nature after school, on the weekends, and in the summer. It's one of the best representations of found family I have ever seen in a cartoon, and I absolutely love it.
Also several of the writers behind the show are POC and queer (I think the head writers are all Black but I could be wrong), so you know that it was written well and the representation is awesome like I know that it should absolutely go without saying, but representation is much more than just showing BIPOC people on screen, and in terms of cartoons I haven't seen that many shows understanding that fact except maybe the Proud Family, Fat Albert, and a few others whose names will return to me once I've taken my ADHD meds. But the point is that Craig of the Creek gets it right. Most of the characters throughout the show (from what I've seen) are BIPOC, and you can tell that there are caring nods to BIPOC communities (primarily Black American communities), and more than that, that the writers know what they're talking about and are deeply familiar with and are a part of those communities. Craig, the titular character, is a young Black boy, and his family are middle class and ultimately very successful Black people. Kelsey (one of the main characters) is Jewish and Polish, and written with more complexity than having a one and done Hanukah celebration. The Creek's main business, a trading post, is run by Kit, a young Black girl with a love for economy and business. And many other characters are racial or ethnic minorities as well, and it warms my heart to see these characters done justice time and time again.
There's great subtle queer rep too, and you can tell it wasn't written just for the sake of representation, like it was thought out and intentional, and it worked beautifully. There are queer witches, and there are no labels applied to them, they're just allowed to exist with no explanations, happily in love with one another. There's a non-binary character later in the series (I'm only like 10 episodes in so I haven't met them yet but I've read amazing things about them). Kelsey also apparently identifies as a lesbian later in the series (I say "apparently" because I haven't done much reading so as to avoid spoilers, not because I am discounting her identity). On top of that, JP (one of the main characters) has a sister who is dating another girl.
There's also a significant amount of body positivity in the show, at least far than I've seen elsewhere. Not only do they openly say "all bodies are beautiful" and follow up on that by defending one another, there's also very little need to defend one another, because there's a very unspoken and deep respect in the Creek for things like body type, skin colour, disabilities, and so on. The kids of the creek, and their grown ups, are all different body types, and given their penchant for community and uplifting one another, it's no wonder they all seem confident in their bodies.
Not to mention the disability representation. There is a character later on in the series who is Black and deaf, and he not only speaks in Sign Language, but in Black American Sign Language. In addition, though unconfirmed, many of the kids in the creek embody aspects of various neurotypes. For example, the three main characters, Craig, Kelsey, and JP all come across as neurodivergent, with special interests, neurodivergent ways of thinking, and so on. Some have speculated that JP has Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, which is a disability often comorbid with ADHD. Not to mention that all the kids in the creek embody different special interests, most of which would be considered weird or frowned upon in everyday society, but that are given the opportunity to shine and flourish in the Creek's accepting culture.
Take the Horse Girls for example, a small clique of girls who roleplay as horses in a pasture near the Creek, and of course many of their behaviours are played as jokes, but ultimately they are accepted and involved in many adventures because of their unique interests and abilities which are ultimately how they aid the rest of the Creek. Every kid is a useful and accepted part of the Creek, with the exception of the ranger scout kids, who are essentially the same as cops, who are often exploitative, rude, and disruptive to the community as a whole.
Ultimately, the show is one of love, friendship, community, and acknowledging differences as a natural and helpful part of life. On top of that, it's not copaganda! What more could you want?

not that anybody needed to hear this today but the dad from back to the future is played by a man literally and legally named CRISPIN. HELLION. GLOVER. like, his parents named him that. as a kid.
he grew up with that name.
like they named him crispin because of shakespeare’s “henry v”. and his middle name was supposed to be herbert but his dad hated it and kept insisting on the name hellion and then he just like… changed his son’s name. like he called him hellion enough that he was like “time to level up from a nickname to a full on replacement name”…
every time i think about this man and how messed up he is i remember this and i’m like “it explains some things. not all, definitely not all. but some”

desperately in need of a cartoon about young girls who all resemble cute forest animals and listen exclusively to k-pop but use k-pop (specifically songs like what is love, by twice) as the soundtrack for their evil and dastardly murders for their secret society

i hope biopics never run out of first names, forcing them to resort to last names instead. imagine trying to watch a movie about benjamin franklin, but the film is just called franklin, and you accidentally put it on because you thought it was about the turtle.
or a thomas jefferson espose but it’s just called jefferson and you think it’s referring to the airplane band.
or imagine watching a series of movies with roman numerals as titles because they’re about monarchs, and you have to piece together which monarch it is by guessing who passed down the name “victoria” seventeen times.
or a story about anne frank named “frank” and you think it’s just a film about some guy.
