Queer Musicians that I Love and You Should too

I’m gay and I’m just in the mood to gush about music so here are some queer artists I wanna recommend:

Yves Tumor (they/them, nonbinary)

I first heard of them when their latest album Heaven To A Tortured Mind starting getting good reviews from critics, but it was their recent EP, The Asymptotical World, that made them a staple on my playlists. They make rock music like no other I’ve heard, every song is like an explosion. Go listen to their song Jackie and try not to have it on repeat for the rest of your week. 

Adrianne Lenker (she/her, queer)

She’s widely known as the singer in the band Big Thief, but I mostly know her for her soothing solo music. Her songs make me want to wander barefoot through a forest in spring, picking flowers and berries and making friends with the unknown. I really love her song anything, it gives me peace. 

Dorian Electra (they/them, genderfluid)

C’mon, I physically can’t talk about my favorite artists without bringing up Dorian. They’re a hyperpop extraordinaire, a drag king, a Lady Gaga remixer, and the maker of the funniest music video in history. A lot of their music criticizes forms of toxic masculinity and celebrates queerness and being a fucking weirdo. No song covers those topics all together better than their song Flamboyant, a song about going all the way. 

Teddy Geiger (she/her, trans woman)

I remember listening to her sometimes years ago, before she came out and she has a few hits from then. I actually rediscovered her while making this post, and it looks like she’s trying to make a comeback in the music industry, and I much prefer her newer stuff over her old songs. They all have a kind of “vibe” to them, pretty noticeable in the song Sharkbait, that I really fuck with. 

Remi Wolf (she/her, bisexual)

With Remi releasing her new album Juno in the next few days, now’s the perfect time to get into her music. Her song Photo ID blew up a bit on Tik Tok, and all her other tracks are just as earwormy (and if you’ve seen the music video, they’re all just as strange). Guerilla is probably my favorite of the singles for her new album so far. 

Issac Dunbar (he/him, gay) 

AKA an 18-year old who has more talent than I’ll have at any age. Especially for being so young, this guy puts so much effort into his music, the videos for it, and the personal lyrics that I’m shocked he’s not raking in fans. His music is honeslty way better than most pop that’s on the radio right now, Makeup Drawer is my current favorite of his but he has so many great songs. 

Glass Beach (¾ members are nonbinary and use they/them pronouns)

This band, this fucking band, needs so much more love. They made an album that touches on the topics of anti-capitalism, gender dysphoria, rats, being a depressed young adult, and it’s all punk rock that combines other genres such as ambient, electronic, and even jazz. AND it was inspired by The Black Parade? These guys are awesome, go listen to the masterpiece that is classic j dies and goes to hell part 1.

Anyway, if y’all wanna recommend queer musicians too go ahead, I love discovering new music and supporting queer people, especially when music has taken a hard hit due to the pandemic.

The fact that French is such a gendered language sucks and is frustrating to no end. But, sometimes (only sometimes) it leads to some pretty cool things.

Like how it allowed Jean-Claude Pascal to sing about gay love while representing Luxembourg at the Eurovision song contest in 1961, unbeknownst to everyone, and win. You read that correctly. He sang "Nous les amoureux" (Us lovers), which tells the story of a couple of male lovers, rejected by society but who will soon be able to love each other freely.

When you listen to it today, the queer subtext is obvious. But back then people just thought it was a song about star-crossed straight lovers. Because, you see, in French when we're talking about multiple people, if there is one man in the group, the whole group is gendered as masculine. So, if you're talking about a couple of lovers, whether it's two men or one man and one woman, it's gendered the same way : masculine. You have a clear example in the title. The word lover, amoureux, is gendered as masculine and not as feminine (amoureuse, or amoureuses if it's plural) or neutral (because that doesn't exist in French). And that fucked up grammar rule ("masculine trumps feminine") allowed him to sing about male lovers while everyone thought he was singing about a straight couple. By being smart about the way he wrote his lyrics, he was able to hide in plain sight.

And that's the story of how a gay song won a european contest in the sixties.

Troye Sivan

Troye Sivan to urodzony 5 czerwca 1995 r. australijski piosenkarz, autor tekstów, aktor i youtuber. Po zdobyciu popularności jako piosenkarz na YouTube i w australijskich konkursach talentów, Sivan podpisał kontrakt z EMI Australia w 2013 roku. Jego muzykę opisać można jako pop elektroniczny połączony z EDM i dance pop. Na swoim muzycznym koncie ma dwa albumy studyjne, pięć EPek, jeden album z remiksami, dwadzieścia trzy single i dziesięć singli promocyjnych. 15 sierpnia 2014 roku Sivan wydał swoją pierwszą EP-kę zatytułowaną TRXYE, która zajęła piąte miejsce na US Billboard 200. Główny singlem z EPki był Happy Little Pill. 4 września 2015 roku Sivan wydał swoją drugą EP-kę Wild. Jego debiutancki album studyjny, Blue Neighbourhood ukazał się 4 grudnia 2015 roku. Utwór Youth stał się pierwszym singlem na albumie. Jego drugi album studyjny Bloom z 2018 r. osiągnął trzecie miejsce w Australii i czwarte miejsce na liście Billboard 200. Główny singlem był My My My!. W 2020 r wydał EP-kę In a Dream, a najnowszym singlem muzyka wydanym w 2021 r. jest utwór Angel Baby.

Jako aktor Sivan wcielił się w młodszego Wolverine'a w X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) i zagrał tytułową postać w filmowej trylogii Spud. Jego kanał na Youtube ma ponad 7,3 miliona subskrybentów i ponad 1,3 miliarda wyświetleń. W 2018 roku otrzymał nominację do Złotego Globu za najlepszą oryginalną piosenkę za Revelation z filmu Boy Erased, w którym grał także drugoplanową rolę aktorską.

Do ulubionych artystów i inspiracji Sivana należą Amy Winehouse, Taylor Swift, Lorde, Michael Jackson, Frank Ocean. W wywiadzie do magazynu Wonderland w 2018 r mówił o swoich inspiracjach i ikonach:

When I think about the songs that I grew up listening to that made me feel ... gay, it was mostly straight women: Cher, Madonna, Miley, Robyn, Lady Gaga. Those are my gay icons, which is a bit strange. I would have loved to have had more queer music growing up. That would have been nice( Troye Sivan, Wonderland, 2018).

Teledyski Sivana często przedstawiają relacje LGBTQ+ między bohaterami. Przykładowo trylogia klipów Blue Neighbourhood opowiadała o dwóch nastolatkach będących w tajnym związku, teledysk do „Youth” również opowiada o queerowych relacjach „Heaven” zawiera nagrania przedstawiające historyczne ruchy społeczności LGBTQ+. Piosenkarz mówi, że te reprezentacje są dla niego ważne, zwłaszcza gdy myśląc o swojej młodości przypomina sobie niezwykle rzadkie wspomnienia, kiedy widział jakikolwiek rodzaj związku LGBTQ w telewizji lub w teledyskach. Ma świadomość, że ich obecność jest bardzo potrzebna. Sam stał się prawdziwą ikoną i ważną reprezentacją dla środowiska LGBTQ+ publikując coming-out 7 sierpnia 2013 roku na Youtubie.

POLSKIE DRAG QUEENS

W dzisiejszym poście chciałabym zwrócić uwagę na twórczość niesamowitych polskich drag queens, które oprócz bycia interesującymi drag performerkami i dragtywistkami aktywnie i dumnie angażującymi się w sprawy związane ze społecznością LGBTQ+ w Polsce, próbują swoich sił w tworzeniu muzyki :D.

Na zdjęciach od lewej:

Twoja Stara: Artystą, który wykreował postać Twojej Starej jest Piotr Buśko. Oprócz bycia komediową drag queen jest również podcasterką, prezenterką i dragtywistką, czyli drag performerką bardzo zaangażowaną aktywistycznie na rzecz społeczności LGBTQ

Shady Lady: Performerem, który wciela się w tak oszałamiającą postać jest Sebastian Mucha. Jest to postać bardzo silnie aktywistyczna i aktywnie walcząca o prawa społeczności.

Mona Lizak: Mówi o sobie: artystka i komediowa Drag Queen, tekściara, piosenkarka, raperka, baba z brodą. Autorka singli Maski, Erotyk czy Bozia, zwiastujących nadejście jej debiutanckiego albumu.

Pierwszą z piosenek, które wam przedstawię jest niezwykle uroczy i kampowy utwór polskich Drag Queens: Shady Lady, Twojej Starej i Loli Eyeonyou Potockiej zatytułowany Technikolor i nagrany specjalnie na składankę Music 4 Queers & Queen, którą Kayax stworzył razem z Paradą Równości.

Pomysł na piosenkę Technikolor celebrującą XX Paradę Równości powstał jeszcze w 2019 roku. Ja - Twoja Stara i Shady Lady zostałyśmy poproszone o poprowadzenie tegorocznej Parady. Pomyślałyśmy, że świetnym prezentem od nas będzie piosenka, która doda wszystkim tęczowej dumy. W naszych marzeniach mówiłyśmy o Hymnie Parady. Na naszą muzyczną platformę zaprosiłyśmy Lolę Eyeonyou Potocki, naszą siostrę, której queer rozszerza granice dragu. Muzyką zajął się Krzysztof Kołodziejczyk, który odpowiada za brzmienia zespołu Bloo Crane. Po drodze spotkałyśmy jeszcze wytwórnię Kayax, pracująca nad płytą „Music 4 Queers & Queens”, która zaufała nam i zaprosiła na składankę. I tak trzy królowe Parady i przyjaciele zebrały się do pracy, której finałem jest ten klip i piosenka – mówi Twoja Stara.

Następnie chciałabym zwrócić uwagę na twórczość Mony Lizak, drag queen, która tworzy autorskie teksty i jest raperką. Jedną z piosenek drag performerki jest humorystyczny Erotyk, czyli polskojęzyczna wersja piosenki Madonny i Shepa Pettibone'a Erotica. Kolejnym Maski do których umieszczam teledysk:

Maski to debiutancki singiel Mony Lizak, zapowiadający nadejście jej pierwszej EPki. Kawałek inspirowany hiphopem i R'n'B lat 2000 opowiada o zmaganiach ludzi wobec oczekiwań społeczeństwa. W projekcie wzięło udział ponad 20 person związanych ze światem polskiego queeru m.in Androdyta, Babcia, Histamina, Kacper Potępski, Ka Katharsis, Kamila Kebaba, Shady Lady i Vipera. Teledysk jest amatorski i kameralny, ale jednocześnie wart uwagi ze względu na to, że zobaczyć w nim można aż tyle osób związanych z polską społecznością LGBTQ+.

Całkiem ciekawym do przesłuchania jest również bardzo bezpośredni i polityczny utwór Bozia:
