6 Quick Writing Exercises to Wake Up Your Imagination

We all hit those blah writing days. Your fingers are ready, your doc is open... and your brain goes static. That’s where writing exercises come in — small creative boosts to shake off the dust and get back into your story flow. Here are six to try when your words feel stuck in traffic.

1. The 5-Minute Word Sprint

Pick a random word (use a generator or close your eyes and point at a book), set a 5-minute timer, and write anything involving that word. No stopping, no deleting.

2. Dialogue Without Context

Write a short convo between two people. No descriptions. No setting. Just back-and-forth lines.

3. Rewrite a Scene in Another Genre

Take a scene from your current story and flip the genre. Drama becomes comedy. Fantasy becomes sci-fi. Romance becomes horror.

4. Describe a Place Using the Five Senses — No Sight Allowed

Can’t mention what anything looks like. Only sound, touch, smell, taste, and intuition.

5. Character Swap POVs

Write a paragraph from the POV of a side character reacting to your main character. Bonus if the POV is brutally honest or completely wrong.

6. One Line Story Hooks

Write 3 one-sentence story starters that make you want to keep writing. (Example: “I woke up married to my enemy, and worse — he knew it before I did.”)

You don’t need to write a masterpiece every day. But showing up — even for a silly exercise — keeps the creative part of your brain warmed up. Try one of these before your next writing session, and see where it takes you. 🍒

One of the things that's happening to me as I detox from Lexapro is I'm having really vivid, involved dreams. Last night's chicanery was like... a Mad Max/Jurassic Park crossover? I had a pet psittacosaurus, and the Mortifiers were raiding the main lab by means of a highspeed chase through an underground parking lot.

Idk, my subconscious kind of went off with this one. Octoboss vs dinosaurs could be a fun crossover.

I was wondering if you're okay with people writing fanfic of your fanfic?

I found the part where Furiosa and Octoboss talk about the rumors about him and Firecat so funny, but it made a plot bunny leap to life in my mind, focused on a more emotionally intense missing scene of sorts where we see how the rumors started, centered around a very loving (but entirely platonic) relationship between the two.

I just wanted to check you'd be okay with me writing in your AU world! I'd post the fic on ao3 with credit, of course. I know you're not the only credited writer so please feel free to run it by your co-author too.

I'm glad other people are vibing with Octobassa. In terms of brains, warrior mindset, and commitment to the welfare of their respective peoples, they're cut from the same cloth. I feel like if they'd interacted under any other conditions but canon they'd have so much chemistry and respect for each other.

Trying my hand at a pulpy sword and sorcery story that will probably devolve into smut right out the gates.

This foray into the intentionally godawful brought to you by that time I bought a collection of Robert E. Howard short stories (with money), read one, and concluded that this could be kind of fun if the author could stop being comically racist for five seconds. (Christ alive, Howard, have you ever actually seen a black man.)

It's gonna be great, it'll have everything! Classics references, complete bullshit I pulled out of my ass, crimes against linguistics, horny sea monsters, barbarian mercenaries that look suspiciously like whoever I have a crush on at the moment, tits out 24/7, out of place cultural references that exist solely because I thought they were cool, sword-swinging warrior priestesses, assassins, gay bullshit, het bullshit, ace bullshit, unendingly horny and chaotic.

(I still need a name for this franchise universe.)

I literally do not give a shit anymore, the world is on fire and I have the unique power to make people forget how difficult everything is right now. Maybe I can generate some income off of this, maybe it'll crash and burn like all my other grand schemes. Screw it, let the dice fly high.

Let me share a story with you.

My one sister swears she has no talent for writing. My other sister does poetry and I'm trying to become a novelist, but Sister #3 Does Not Write™️.

When we were kids, our mom made us do this creative writing exercise where she'd give us a picture and we'd have to come up with the beginning of a story about it.

Sister #3 thought this was bullshit.

Sister #3, in protest, came up with the character of Super Hamster. All of her stories were satire in which Super Hamster swooped into the scene and wrecked shit.

We fucking loved Super Hamster. That shit was hilarious. Getting to hear about his latest antics quickly became the highlight of the week.

My sister still swears she has no writing talent.

The moral of the story is that imposter syndrome is bullshit, and a concept can be stupid as hell and be beloved specifically for that reason.

I kind of want to write a sword and sorcery pulp novel. Like the brainless fun, bronze age knockoff thing that the Conan books or Fire and Ice had going, without the racism and tone-deaf misogyny.
