My 3500-word queer, sci-fi short story, The Space Between Us tells the aftermath of escaping the portal storm where Princexx Khana del Janin, heir to the Jinan Intergalactic Empire is unconscious and the power vacuum proves a little too intoxicating for the few remaining officers. Tuân, Nadira and Onan are Princexx Khana’s (or Her Bitchness, as Tuân calls her) only surviving concubines.Tuân, haunted by his horrible, messy mistakes and need for redemption, yearns to free himself from his life of enforced slavery. Nadira is the only one who’s shown him any shred of decency, but is their kindness genuine? Could they be an ally? Considering how Tuân ended up as Her Bitchness’s slave and concubine because he fucked her that one time and she didn’t take no for an answer when he tried to correct his mistake, Tuân doesn’t trust his judgment as much. The stakes are too high to get this wrong, but this is the best shot he will ever have at getting Nadira on his side. Only then can Tuân truly stand a chance at escaping and setting things right.

How to show bitterness

tightness around their eyes

pinched mouth

sour expression on their face

crossed arms

snorting angrily

turning their eyes upward

shaking their head

How to show hysteria

fast breathing

chest heaving

trembling of their hands

weak knees, giving in

tears flowing down their face uncontrollably

laughing while crying

not being able to stand still

How to show awe

tension leaving their body

shoulders dropping

standing still

opening mouth

slack jaw

not being able to speak correctly

slowed down breathing

wide eyes open

softening their gaze

staring unabashingly

How to show shame

vacant stare

looking down

turning their head away

cannot look at another person

putting their head into their hands

shaking their head

How to show being flustered

blushing

looking down

nervous smile

sharp intake of breath

quickening of breath

blinking rapidly

breaking eye contact

trying to busy their hands

playing with their hair

fidgeting with their fingers

opening mouth without speaking

It is finally September which means hopefully cooler weather, fun fall clothing (sweaters my love), seasonal adventures aaaand of course NEW BOOKS! Admittedly the fact that we are finally getting Nona has me just…. vibrating out of my skin. Like no joke I’m barely keeping it together.
