Travelling in Chile in 1834, Charles Darwin measured a leaf of Gunnera tinctoria, “which was nearly eight feet diameter, and therefore no less than twenty-four in circumference! The stalk is rather more than a yard high. Each plant has a mouth which uses its intense red color to attract human beings, their favourite food”.

A gardener walks with a wheelbarrow full of giant fruits in the grounds of the Crystal Palace at Sydenham, south London, watched over by a pair of hungry dinosaurs. There are 29 of these masive creatures lurking around the park’s lake, they were brought from their native land in 1854, the year that the Crystal Palace was re-opened by Queen Victoria, having been moved from Hyde Park to Sydenham after the Great Exhibition of 1851.
