saw an elderly woman walking around with a tote bag whose design were the four AO3 fic category squares and she very excitedly asked if i was a reader or a writer bcs nobody else at the con had recognized it, and after telling her that i've been writing fic since fanfic.net, she solemnly nodded and explained that she'd been reading fic since "the days of personal websites" but that she only started writing fanfic when she was 47 and oh my god when i tell you that i genuinely teared up on the spot!!!!! like!!! HELL YEAH???? LITERALLY NEVER TOO OLD TO START WRITING. NEVER TOO OLD TO WRITE AND SHARE YOUR FIC.

her enthusiastic "i'm a very nice and bubbly person, i swear! but i love writing angst and major character death :)" nearly took me the fuck out.

We were originally going to make a very different piece for Pride - something bold, something making a strong statement, something to join in solidarity with all the beautiful and brave artworks we've seen circling on Instagram throughout this year…but when the time came around to try making it, we just felt exhausted.

This year has been very rough for so many of us. There has been so much fear, anger, hurt, and confusion. It has been stressful. It has been grief-filled. It has been a constant string of battles. Right now, I think I just need a long hug, and perhaps you're feeling the same way.

So, we decided to pivot our direction for our Pride Month art and make it about comfort instead. Because despite everything that is going on, we're still here. We're still together. And we can hold each other's hands as we walk through the night. We can still be each other's light.

one of several quick character sketches i made for a 1900s murder mystery AU idea with my sibling - liked this one a lot so decided to color it and post (could not be bothered to clean up the sketch this time and my excuse is that i got really sick this week ;v;)

also i only learned that the amount of lines on the sleeves are used to denote rank after i already finished 🫠

random jotaro headcanons

1. as a child, jotaro wanted a pet. his mom didn't allow him to get one as she was basically a single parent by this point - she didn't want to be caring for both a child and a pet all on her own

because of this, jotaro was secretly thrilled when the crusaders got iggy (despite iggy's initial treatment of the group) and enjoyed taking care of the dog during the group's downtime - he ended up becoming the person that iggy was the most calm around by the end of their journey

had iggy survived the adventure, jotaro and polnareff would have gotten into an argument over who was adopting the dog

the pain of losing iggy is why jotaro never owned any pets after egypt - much to the disappointment of jolyne who, as a child, wanted a pet

2. as a baby, jotaro was taken to the 1972 winter olympics in Sapporo by his parents - this was one of the only times the family of three ever attended a major event together

3. because of his mixed family, jotaro was raised practicing three religions: shinto, buddhism, and christianity - he himself is agnostic

4. jotaro hates the flavor of sweet on its own and always needs another flavor (tart, salty, etc.) to balance it out

5. jotaro's iconic hand emblem was a gift from a high school friend that he only knew for a single year - despite this, their friendship meant enough that jotaro continued to incorporate the emblem into his outfits for the rest of his life

pretty much no one else knows this friendship existed, as jotaro started keeping holy in the dark about his school life during this time. he has also never told the friend's real name to anyone else

6. winter used to be jotaro's favorite season - he later changed it to summer

7. jotaro was irritated by the hard rock and metal crazes of the '80s, preferring slower and less intense music

he remained a very faithful listener to his favorite '70s music until the end of his life, no matter how uncool or old-fashioned others found his taste

tfw you've got the finale set for your story series and it keeps replaying over and over in your head - but you've still got to write all the stories leading up to that point so the ending can be as climactic as you hope it'll be

(⭐️+🦉's frustrated rant about Stone Free/Jolyne's powers)

we've been reviewing the Part 1-6 Joestars' powers for an AU idea, and while i've yet to fully watch Part 6, this research has made me feel like Jolyne got totally thrown under the bus -

all of the other JoJos in her family get super cool (and potentially busted) signature abilities:

"channeling the power of the sun," “clairvoyance,” “stopping time,” “repairing anything,” “being able to CREATE LIFE (and later NULLIFY ANYTHING)"

and the signature ability she gets is “turning into string”

like-

THIS is what Araki/his editors gave the one female JoJo, and it seems about equivalent to the less powerful/more situation-specific abilities of side characters from previous parts

(spoilers for the end of Stone Ocean/Part 6 below)

furthermore, going off what i currently understand of JoJo lore - unlike all the other JoJos whose signature abilities play an active role in defeating their main antagonists, Jolyne is left in the same boat as Josuke (Part 4): her abilities fall short of being effective against the antagonist, leaving things entirely up to someone else to save the day (and unlike Josuke, she doesn't even get the satisfaction of living to see the victory)

i know there's some great aspects of Jolyne's story, and that Stone Ocean is likely the point where Araki's battle writing style shifted to the more grounded standard we see in Part 7 and onwards -

but why oh WHY did the biggest protagonist L in all of JJBA have to be given to the only female JoJo?

if Araki ever makes another female JoJo, i want to see her get a satisfying and truly self-earned victory using her signature abilities in the final battle - Araki/his editors need to stop making the female protagonists unable to win fights on their own when a win matters the most

worst thing is - they had a second chance to give Jolyne a finale victory since she was in the final fight of Eyes of Heaven...but they had the audacity to make her victory a fake-out farce before Thanos-snapping her - so in the end Jotaro gets the true win without her help by literally just doing the Part 3 final solution all over again, nearly beat for beat

This should go without saying, but you can't just take everything a character says as face-value true and canon by default. (protagonist, antagonist or otherwise)

When evaluating whether something a character says about themselves, about someone else, about a situation, a piece of information, etc, is true, here are some things to think about.

Who is speaking?

Who are they speaking to?

Why are they speaking about the subject? Is it with a goal in mind?

Does the speaker have full information and context about the subject they're speaking about?

Does the speaker have any reason to hide, obscure, manipulate or alter the information or context about the subject to the listener?

Does the speaker have any reason to lie to the listener about the subject?

Does the speaker have any reason to lie to themselves about the subject?

Does the speaker have any principles, beliefs or goals that might alter their own interpretation of the subject they're speaking about?

Could the speaker be mistaken, confused, or misinformed?

Basically when you look at whether something a character is saying is true canonically, you have to figure out if they know what they're talking about, and if they're lying, deliberately or otherwise.
