I just read Waking Up and Running. Both are incredible stories! I hope you plan on writing more someday. I think I'll go read the Christmas one-shots now!
Omg, thank you so much!! I’m really glad you enjoyed them! :) I definitely plan to write more, unfortunately life has kind of gotten in the way recently, and I’ve hardly had time to do anything or even be active here at all. I’m really hoping that I’ll be able to make time to start writing for you guys again this year. Thank you so much for the support. 💕

Congrats on 1k🎉 How about a song drabble for the song Flaws by Bastille? 💕 💕
Hello!! Here it is, I’m sorry it took me forever but thank you for being patient and I really hope you enjoy!!
Ok everyone I’m so so sorry for disappearing from tumblr for quite a while but here is the last drabble from my 1k celebration! I’ll try to post a proper update soon but I’m excited to hopefully be able to post regularly again soon. Thanks to all of you for sticking around!!
Warnings: Angsty a bit but also kind of fluffy?
-
It’s almost funny; of all the things that can draw people together, for you and Bucky… it was your flaws.
He tried to keep his hidden – buried them deep down, tried to pretend he was okay. But when he met you, you were just the opposite. He’d never seen someone embrace their flaws so openly, who could wear them on their sleeve. But somehow, you could. He thought that you were strong. He thought that you were extraordinary. And, more importantly, he saw beauty in in the way you didn’t hide the flaws you had.
It was no secret that you both had dark pasts. You could read it in his eyes, and he could see it on your face. He was awed by you in every moment in which you spent together – at how you didn’t feel the need to hide. But he still thought his flaws were ugly – so he hid them, and he hid from you.
Bucky thought that he was broken, like there was a hole in his soul. He didn’t want to force you to fix him, even though he spent many sleepless nights imagining that you could.
And you? You wanted to fill that hole. You wanted to show him that he wasn’t broken; that he didn’t need to be fixed. To dig up all of his flaws and show him that they could be beautiful, just like the rest of him.
-
Bucky had locked himself into his room in the compound. He was having a bad night – or a bad week, if he was being honest. He had fallen victim once again to his nightmarish mind, and so he isolated himself from you, from everyone. He was used to Steve knocking on his door during times like these, but when he hears a soft tapping on the door, he can tell exactly who it this time. And it isn’t Steve.
Bucky holds his breath. He waits, scared to speak, scared to do anything.
You stand outside his door, tension thick, mustering all the courage that you could manage. And then you call out to him.
“Buck? Can you please let me in?”
And he doesn’t know if it’s because it’s you, or if it’s the gentle tone of your voice, but something in his resolve crumbles. And slowly, hesitantly, he makes his way to the door and opens it.
Your heart clenches at the sight of him; his disheveled hair, shining blue eyes rimmed with red, and the expression of resigned anguish on his face.
You step into the room, not sure where to start. Bucky softly shuts the door behind you, and moves to sit on his bed, not daring to look at you again. He braces his arms on his knees and hangs his head. The silence seems to go on for ages; your heart aches. All the words that you can find seem wrong.
“You don’t need to hide,” you whisper finally, once you find your voice.
His gaze meets yours then, just for a moment. Behind the pain in those haunting eyes, you see a sliver of shock. He opens his mouth just slightly, as if searching for words himself, but then seemingly loses his nerve, shakes his head and looks down again.
When he doesn’t reply, you tentatively step closer, and sit down beside him on the edge of his bed. You wait for him to say something, careful not to overstep.
“I’m not strong like you,” Bucky finally rasps, quietly. “I’m just… broken.”
A pang echoes in your chest. You fight the urge to wrap your arms around him – not yet. You settle for gently placing a hand on his shoulder.
“You’re not broken, Bucky,” you reply gently. “You’re a survivor.”
He looks at you then, questions written all over his face. He studies you, eyes wide.
“The things you’ve been through,” you continue, “all of the things you think are wrong with you… they’ve all played a role in making you who you are.”
You break the eye contact this time.
“And I think…” you inhale, voice faltering as you begin your confession, “I think who you are is magnificent.”
For a moment, your breath hitches. Another silence envelops you. When you finally meet Bucky’s eyes again, what you see there takes your breath away all over again: pure vulnerability. Those shining blue eyes bore into yours; still wide, his disbelief evident. But something shifts in his expression; as if he’s realizing something, as if he wants to believe you.
“But… I’m a mess,” he whispers lowly. Confusion flickers across his features.
“So am I,” you respond sincerely. But Bucky shakes his head, strands of chestnut falling into his face.
“No,” he replies. And after a pause that seems to go on forever… “You’re wonderful.”
Your heart flutters.
“So are you,” you say, somewhat shocked by his words, but unable to stop the ghost of a smile from appearing on your face.
While Bucky continues to stare at you in awe, you lightly place your hand on top of his where it rests beside you. His eyes follow your movements, surprised and timid at first, even as he flips his hand over gently and entwines his fingers with your own. When he tears his eyes away to meet yours once more, Bucky is the one who surprises you. He reaches over with his other hand, and lightly brushes his fingers across your cheekbone. Your breathing hitches; eyes fluttering closed. He cradles your face in his hand, leans in, and… Bucky kisses you, ever so softly.
In that moment, it’s more than you could have ever wanted, ever imagined.
What a wonderful mess the two of you made.

It took Bucky a whole 24 hours to fall for you.
Steve had told him that there was someone new joining the team and moving into the tower. But he’d neglected to mention that it was someone, well… someone like you. And Bucky hadn’t been prepared for that.
It took him a second to catch his breath. A minute to pick out all the colors in your eyes. And longer to force himself to say more than a hello.
After an hour, he was intrigued. By the end of the night, fascinated. The next morning, he was enamoured. And by the next evening? Well, all he could say is that he couldn’t think of anything else, couldn’t get you off of his mind. His only thoughts were about all the rest of the hours he wanted to spend with you.
-
Bucky watches you; noting you bright smile, your easy laugh. The sound is like music to his ears – drawing him in, making his heart flutter in his chest. You glance over and shoot him a grin; he gives you a small smile back, before he loses his nerve and looks away. You return to your conversation with the rest of the team, and Bucky almost doesn’t notice Steve sitting down beside him.
“You could join in, you know,” Steve says, trying to fight back his smirk. His eyes flick between you and Bucky; he’s noticed the way his gaze never seems to leave you.
Bucky just shakes his head. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to, he just wasn’t sure what to say, what to do. That ease and charm had left him a long time ago.
“I think someone like her could be good for you, Buck.”
Bucky agreed. You were sweet, fun, like instant sunshine. His mood lifted, the world brightened when you were around him. But Bucky didn’t want someone like you… he just wanted you.
“A girl like her with a guy like me? I don’t think so,” he remarks. He didn’t want to bring you down.
And Steve doesn’t say anything, but he has a glint in his eye that reminds him of a kid he once knew from Brooklyn; so Bucky knows he’s up to something.
-
“Steve said you wanted to ask me something?” you say, ambushing him in the kitchen.
And for a moment, Bucky freezes. But you’re peering up at him with those eyes, smiling brightly, and so you melt his defenses. He curses Steve under his breath, punk, but he finally finds to courage to say something.
And he mumbles and stutters, blushing, but he finds some words, somehow.
“Do you want to go out, sometime… with me?”
-
He’s still surprised that you’d said yes. Surprised even more still at how well everything had gone.
Something about you made everything fun. You’d taken in the city together. The sun had shone brightly; dulled only by your smile. Bucky, in turn, had smiled more than he thought he ever had before in just a day with you. You made him so happy – your mood was contagious. And you’d stayed out together until sun down.
He’s the most surprised at his own boldness, perhaps a reflection of yous, when he brushes some loose strands of your hair back, and watches the starlight dance in your eyes. And he kisses you.
-
Bucky comes home from a mission, feeling like he’s barely alive – just like so many other times. It’s some ridiculous hour of the morning, and he’s drained, and tired. But as per usual, you shoot out of bed when you hear him come in.
And the moment he sees that smile, the moment he wraps his arms around you tightly, everything is right again. Just your presence invigorates him – rejuvenates him. He’s more alive than ever, anytime he sees you, feels you. And when you curl up beside him, he’s finally at peace.
-
Bucky rarely let loose.
He might’ve gone a bit too far tonight.
You’d been away on a mission and were coming back tonight. It also happened to be a night when Tony Stark decided to throw a party, along with copious amounts of alcohol. Bucky’s days of missing you and excitement of your return may have led to a few… questionable decisions.
He might have been a little hazy, but he saw you the moment you stepped into the room, clear as day. Glowing like sunshine.
And you beam at him when he walks over, giggling when he sloppily pulls you in for a hug.
“I missed you, doll,” he mutters groggily.
You laugh again, pulling back and placing a steadying hand along his jaw as you peer at him.
“I missed you too. Bucky… are you drunk?” you ask, raising an eyebrow.
He nods sheepishly. You chuckle at his expression.
“You’re a dork. But I love you.”
His mind clears for a second. He wasn’t sure anyone would ever say those words to him. Bucky had made so many mistakes, and he’d been sure this whole time that you’d decide you’d had enough at any minute. But your eyes are bright, earnest, and his fuzzy heart beats wildly in his chest.
“I love you too,” he slurs.
You grin at him, and he mirrors it. He slings and arm around your shoulders, clumsily clinging to your side like a lost puppy for the rest of the night.
-
The night passes in a bit of a haze for Bucky, but that moment never leaves his memory. Even years later.
A girl like you and a guy like him?
To Bucky’s surprise… it worked out pretty well after all.

can you pleaseeeee do forest fire by brighton! thank you so much! ❣️ i have no clue how you could do this but what about during infinity war with the line “i should’ve saved you”
Hi anon! 💗 I hope this is what you were looking for! I tried my best to tie this in with Infinity War for you.
Again I want to thank everyone for their patience. I’ve got 2 drabbles left to go, and hopefully they’ll be finished soon.
Warnings: IW spoilers, so ANGST.
-
You had been there through the nightmares.
When Bucky would wake up, screaming into the night, you were by his side.
You would tell him it was alright. You would tell him he was safe.
You’d never realized that you’d been lying.
-
You weren’t there, on the battlefield, when it happened.
After all that you’d gone through, in the end, it took only a snap for it all to come crashing down.
Bucky had told you where he was going, and why. You’d told him to be careful, that you’d be waiting for him when he came back. After he’d saved the world, you’d joked. And he had kissed you, he had said goodbye. You hadn’t known that it was the last time.
You knew something was wrong the moment you saw Steve. He had come to you alone. When he’d found you, a mixture of emotions played across his face; shock, relief, sadness, grief. You could tell something was off, and your heart sank instantly.
You’d broken when Steve told you that he was gone. The words felt like a stab in the chest, your heart shattering into a million tiny pieces. Steve was talking, but you couldn’t understand the words, couldn’t believe them. After everything, this couldn’t have been the end. You couldn’t have lost him like this.
Steve stayed with you; you’d cried together. Sobbed, mourned the loss of the man you’d both loved. Your heart broke even more for him – he’d lost Bucky so many times already. You weren’t sure that you would even survive once. So you’d been there for each other as the pain overwhelmed you both.
You weren’t strong. Not without Bucky.
-
You hadn’t seen it happen.
But in your dreams, you saw it over and over again.
For a moment, you’d be happy. You’d see him, smiling; his beautiful, bright eyes. His soft hair. His kind smile. And within the dream, you would forget that it could never be real.
And then it would change.
The world would darken. You would be surrounded by strange creatures, by violence, by blood. There was fighting, screaming – a deafening roar in your ears.
And then he would fade away. Panic would set in, washing away any trace of the joy you’d felt. You’d reach for him, but he would slip through your fingers. He was gone, and you couldn’t stop it. You could only watch in horror.
And all that remained was ash.
And then you’d wake up, in a cold sweat, screaming – out of breath, out of tears. Night after night. And Bucky wasn’t there to save you.
-
You had promised that he was safe. But you’d broken that promise.
You should have saved him.
The thought enveloped you. It haunted you, pestered you, and it wouldn’t stop.
You should have been there. You shouldn’t have let him go. You should have stopped him. You could only think of the words you should have said.
All you wanted was to bring him home.
But… you didn’t have a home. Not anymore, not without Bucky. He was your home, you’d realized. And now he was gone.
You were alone. You were lost.
All that was left was ash, along the memories you’d always carry with you.
And the ache – the emptiness – that you were certain would haunt you for the rest of your life.
-

innocent by taylor swift is a great song that describes bucky really well
Here you go! Sorry for the wait and thanks for your patience!
This one’s a little angsty, a little fluffy.
Apologies again for how delayed the last few of these have been - I only have 3 left so I hope I’ll be able to do them soon for you all.

It’s a warm night. A cool breeze stirs in the air; the sky is dark, dotted with lights from the city. Despite the constant fuss below you, it was calm. Peaceful. You knew you’d find Bucky up here.
The rooftop was often his refuge. Usually, you’d leave him alone. But he suffered too much, for crimes he had no control over committing. You couldn’t handle seeing him in pain anymore. So today, you were going to say something. Maybe it would be a mistake, but you were willing to try anyways.
Bucky was a balancing act, constantly treading between the light and the dark. Sometimes, he’d lose his balance, and slip into the dark. And he’d lose his mind trying to get back. You’d never even pretend to understand the things that went through his head; Bucky’s mind was a shattered puzzle. And more than anything, you just wanted to help him fit the pieces back together.
He’s just sitting, silently, looking out at the lights around him. You’re sure that he heard you open the door, but he doesn’t look over as you approach. The soft lights of the city dance across his metal arm, the soft breeze rustles his dark hair.
You sit beside him in silence. He doesn’t speak for a while, and neither do you.
“It’s beautiful out there tonight,” you say gently after a few moments.
Bucky nods beside you.
“I’m not sure I’ll ever get used to this view,” he whispers.
He finally looks over at you then. There’s a sadness in his eyes, an echo of pain that you know he’s all too familiar with. You pause for just a second.
“Are you okay, Buck?”
He looks away again, studying the skyline.
“Can’t sleep.”
Of course. You knew about the things that haunted him – the things he couldn’t speak of. And how he relived it all every night. You swallow. But Bucky continues.
“I just… I wish things could go back. To before. Things were easier then,” he mumbles.
“I know, Bucky. I know.” Your heart clenches. “But it’s not who you are.”
He shakes his head.
“I did it all,” he states, clenching his fist. “The whole world knows. They will always see me as a monster.”
“Life’s a tough crowd,” you respond. The ghost of a smirk plays across his lips. “But It’s not true. The team sees past all of that. Steve sees you for who you are,” you say softly.
And then, you take a breath.
“I… I see you, Bucky.”
He turns back to you then. His eyebrows furrow, questions written all over his face. Your heart races.
“How do you see me?” Bucky whispers.
You inhale.
“You’re an innocent. Who you are is not what you did. You are kind, and brave, and strong. And when you smile, you shine brighter than the sun.”
You hold your breath while Bucky stares at you, trying to wrap his mind around your words. He looks down, then speaks.
“I couldn’t… I don’t deserve you. Not after everything… You deserve someone better.”
You reach out, taking his hand in yours. And you’re surprised when he doesn’t pull away. Instead, Bucky meets your gaze.
“It’s never too late to start again, Bucky. To be someone new. To leave the past behind you.”
Bucky studies you a little longer. Something shifts in his face; admiration, maybe even love. He squeezes your hand lightly. It’s not much, but it’s enough. And he nods, slowly.
“Thank you,” he murmurs after a moment, a little flustered.
You smile softly at him; scoot closer, until you’re touching. He doesn’t move away, so you just sit there with him as he tries to rid the monsters from his mind, hoping your presence makes it a little easier. And you make a silent promise to him, to yourself, that if those monsters come back again, that you’ll chase them away together.

Can I request Bleeding Out by Stitched Up Heart please 💖
Hope you enjoy! 💗
This one is on the longer side. I’m sorry I haven’t posted any of these in a few days - I’ve been busy and just started a new job so it’s been a bit hectic for me lately. I only have a few left to go and I’ll try my best to get them done asap.
Warnings: Abusive relationship, angst. Happy Ending.

Bucky is observant.
He supposed that it came from his time as an assassin, a weapon. His eyes had been trained to pick up on every meticulous detail, to see things that most people would miss. Maybe it was because was used to being silent, to blending in with the shadows. And maybe sometimes people didn’t notice him there, so they didn’t try to hide as much. Either way, he noticed everything.
And he noticed when you changed.
-
He’d always kept himself at a distance. Maybe it was because you scared him – he didn’t know why he felt that pull towards you. Didn’t know what it would do to him, what he’d do to you. So he’d tried to ignore the way your smile made him feel fuzzy, the way the sound of your voice made his heart flutter. You’d been kind to him, and he’d tried to show you the same courtesy. But he was sure that he’d failed, so he did what he did best. He observed.
Bucky had noted the playful glint in your eyes. The brightness in your laugh. The glow of happiness that seemed to follow you wherever you went, drawing him to you like a flame. And he noted when that fire died.
-
The signs were faint at first.
Something had shifted in you… something about your eyes. That wide-eyed innocence was gone. Your laugh started to sound wrong; it seemed empty, forced. That glow had dimmed, and instead, it seemed that you were enveloped by heavy shadows. No one else noticed, and you kept a smile plastered on your face. You were convincing, but Bucky knew better. He just didn’t know what was wrong.
The first time he suspected it, you’d been talking with Steve and Sam. Your friends, your team, your family. And as you talked, one of them lifted a hand – just a gesture. And you flinched. Just slightly, but you flinched. You regained your composure quickly. But Bucky saw. His eyes narrowed, gaze meeting yours. And you just smiled, looked away.
He found you later that day.
“Hey, Buck,” you greeted cheerily when he approached you, a smile on your face. He could see right through you.
“Are you okay?” Bucky asked, voice low.
“What?” A laugh. “I’m fine, Bucky.”
“You sure?”
His eyes locked on yours. But you just looked away, smiled again – although he could tell it wasn’t genuine.
“Yes. Don’t worry about me. I’ve, uh, I gotta go. See you later.”
Bucky stands there, alone, long after you leave. Thinking. How could he make you hear him? How could he show you that he cared?
-
His suspicions are confirmed when he catches the bruises – the shades of black and blue. You do a good job of hiding them; high necklines, long sleeves. But he notices every time the edges show themselves. And every time, you laugh it off. Training accidents, tripping, I’m just such a klutz. Bucky’s words fall on deaf ears. And you keep going back. Every night, when you leave, he knows where you’re going. He’s knows what’s happening, and it kills him.
And then one day, you’re training with him. Before, he would have enjoyed the chance to be so close to you. But he’s not happy. Because he notices that there’s fear in your eyes. And even though he’s holding back, your blocking falters. And then you stop.
You drop to the ground, cowering beneath him. Sobs wrack your body. And you give up trying to fight, curling into yourself. His heart cracks.
Bucky drops to his knees. He wants to touch you, hold you, but he knows he shouldn’t – not now. So he sits beside you, murmuring, wishing he knew how to comfort you.
“Hey, Doll, it’s okay… I won’t hurt you… please,” he whispers.
And when you finally look up at him, you look… empty, haunted. A pang in his chest.
“Please, let me help you,” he pleads.
You don’t even acknowledge his words. They’re empty.
“Can you even hear me?”
The words come out broken. Because he doesn’t know how to get through to you. Because he’s screaming the words in his head, but he can’t make you hear them. He can’t save you if you won’t let him.
And you turn your head. You look at him. And he can see the pain. For once, you don’t hide.
“Why do you go back?” he asks.
“I don’t know what you mean,” you mumble, looking away. A feeble denial.
He sighs – frustrated, sad, lost. And he tries one last time.
“I… I love you. Please. Let me show you.”
You start, eyes wide. You watch him for a moment, blink a few times. He holds his breath.
“I have… I have to go,” you stutter, bolting upright. Bucky watches you leave, his heart in tatters.
-
Bucky hears a soft knock on his door, late at night. He’s suspicious, but he gets up anyways. And when he opens it, his heart stops.
You stand there; tears in your eyes, bruises on your skin. He still thinks you’re beautiful. Bucky sees your scars – he has some of his own, too. And in that moment, he vows that together, you will find a way to heal them.
The two of you gaze at each other, and then time stats again. You collapse into him, and he wraps his arms around you, holding you tightly. And he starts crying too. Because somehow, he’d gotten through. Somehow, you’d heard him. And he was ready to show you how much he loved you in the way you deserved.

Hi can I request Nightmares by All Time Low please
Here you go! 💕
Warnings: Angsty, but a happy ending!
1K Song Drabble Requests are now closed.
-
Sometimes, Bucky lets himself think back to before everything happened. Back when he was just a kid, back when New York was all he knew. So much had changed – no, everything had changed. And it had changed him, too. That kid never dreamed he’d grow up to be afraid of the dark.
The nights were always the hardest. During the day, he could fake it. He could put on a happy face; for Steve, for the team, for everyone. They didn’t need to know what a mess he still was. Even he could forget about it for a while; lock it away in a box and ignore all of the feelings. But the monsters always came out at night. It was hard to be brave, alone in the dark, when the demons in your head still haunted you.
-
Bucky wakes up drowning in blankets, a thin sheen of sweat coating his whole body. He claws at them, trying to escape invisible fingers grasping him, choking him. His eyes shoot open, his breathing’s erratic. It takes him a minute to come back to himself; he swears he sees a ghost in the back of the room. He blinks rapidly, trying to discern reality from his own mind. Tears fall freely as he chokes back sobs. Finally, he comes to, remembering where he is, and the vision disappears. His pulse stops racing, his breathing slows.
The relief is only momentary, however. Because what he sees aren’t just images his brain created, no – they’re memories. Of the things he did, the people he… his missions. And then the guilt comes. He starts to think that maybe he deserves it. That the punishment is fitting for the crime. After everything he did, does really he deserve the peace of sleep?
And so it goes, every night: the nightmares, the memories, the guilt. He’s grown accustomed to the long, restless nights. Maybe they would go on forever. But if that’s the price he had to pay for all the blood on his hands, then he’ll bear it.
-
When Bucky meets you, it takes a moment for him to convince himself that you’re real. He wonders if, for once, he’s seeing a vision of something beautiful instead of horrific. But he knows he’s never seen you before – he knows he would have remembered – so he figures you must be real. If you’re not, well, he doesn’t really mind. He’d give into this delusion. Still, he’s speechless for a few moments, awkwardly gawking. Which is why he finds it even more unbelievable when you smile at him.
The most unbelievable thing, however, happens when he falls asleep beside you. The nightmares don’t come – somehow, you keep them away. He never feels those invisible hands grabbing him, strangling him, suffocating him. He just feels your arms around him; the soft rise and fall of your chest. And when he finally wakes up, he doesn’t see a demon. No, he sees an angel.

You watch the sunset as you wait for him to pick you up, fingers fiddling nervously. No matter how much time passes, he always seems to be able to set your heart racing.
But those nerves die when he pulls up. The sight of Bucky’s smile, framed by the dark metallic sheen of the car and the streaks of deep purples and oranges in the sky, is absolutely breathtaking.
You can’t help but return the smile as you make your way towards him. He greets you, you talk, you laugh – and you know it sounds stupid, but you felt so grown up with him. Even though, physically, he was so much bigger than you; mentally, he was experienced, wise… Bucky never made you feel small, or like a dumb kid. He made you feel treasured, like the most precious thing in the world. You’d never been so happy; nothing else mattered when you were with him.
-
You both had a million bad habits, both had flaws and secrets. You’d heard enough about him – from friends, from strangers. You’d been warned to stay away. You’d both tried to keep it quiet… but people still talked. And to be honest, you didn’t care.
Because none of it mattered later that night, when you gave into another bad habit – not sleeping. When you exchanged murmured I love yous. When his lips were on yours. When your fingers tangled in his hair, as his traced the planes of your face. When you gazed into those crystalline eyes.
No, it didn’t matter at all.
You giggle as Bucky bites your lip.
-
Word gets out. It always does, somehow.
You listen to the people you’d called friends drone on and on. You tune out their judgement, their schemes. Maybe they were just jealous. After all, who wouldn’t want Bucky? But you knew him inside and out. You knew none of the things they said were true. You knew the goodness in his heart – and the rest didn’t matter.
Either way, when he picks you up, you don’t try and hide it. In fact, you make a show of it. You lean in, press a kiss to his lips. If he’s surprised, he doesn’t show it. You entwine your fingers with his; he drapes an arm around your shoulders. Everyone gapes, but it doesn’t bother you. Let the whole world find out.
-
Bucky takes you dancing. People stare, people point, and neither of you care. Swaying to the music, his hand on your waist, love in his eyes… it was like you were the only two people that existed. Dancing in a world alone.
You knew you didn’t have forever – even if Bucky was technically over 100 years old. So, you were going to make the most of it. You would shout it from the rooftops, scream it out to the world.
And people could talk all they wanted to.

You can’t deny that you’re drawn to the handsome stranger sitting next to you at the bar. You can’t really see his face, but he’s got on a leather jacket, sitting snugly across his broad shoulders, dark jeans and Nike sneakers. His long chestnut hair is hanging loose around his chiseled jaw. So, it might not be an accident when you brush his arm with your own.
He turns, and you smirk, apologizing. There’s shock on his face, evident in his wide ethereal blue eyes. You’d never seen a color like that before. Although… does he look familiar?
His shock fades, and when he notices your expression, he grins shyly.
“Nice jacket,” you point out. You weren’t lying, it looked good.
“Thanks,” he replies, voice still low, timid. But his smile doesn’t falter. He reaches up to brush the hair out of his face. And that’s when you see it; the metal. His hand glints. And you realize why he looked familiar – you knew exactly who he was.
You unintentionally let out a small gasp, and he must see it click, the recognition on you face. His own face falls as he realizes. He automatically leans back, and moves to get up.
“I’m sorry,” he mutters anxiously, eyes shifting. “I didn’t mean to… I should just leave-”
“Hey,” you interrupt, placing a hand on his arm. “It’s okay. Aren’t you going to buy me a drink first?”
You let that smirk form on your face again. He studies you for a moment, confusion flickering in his eyes, before he seems to realize that you aren’t afraid of him. And hesitantly, he sits back down, smiles. And you think it’s beautiful.
-
Bucky was sure that you were going to be terrified of him. He knew he had a reputation, he knew that people talked. And even if he wasn’t the Winter Soldier anymore, that past continued to haunt him. So when he saw that look in your eyes… he didn’t want to make you uncomfortable. But to his surprise, you hadn’t seemed to care at all.
He didn’t understand why someone like you would be interested in someone like him. But he couldn’t say no when you’d asked him for that drink. And so carefully, he’d taken a step. He stayed, he’d talked to you. He’d been drawn to you, maybe the same way you were drawn to him, he hoped. He couldn’t make any promises. But he’d try.
-
You take it slow. You couldn’t imagine what Bucky had been through, so you don’t push him. The two of you meet up in the bar where you’d met, you stay in the back where people can’t see. You talk for hours; you learn about Bucky, the person. The man behind the stories. That reluctant smile gets brighter, more confident. And you fall for him. What you have is fragile, but exquisite. And you’ll protect it with everything that you have.
-
Bucky had never expected someone to want to know about him, to care enough to gently try to push past his walls. Never too hard. Just enough for him to open up. He’s amazed that you want to stay with him, even with all the things people say. He figures that you must like him for who he is. And while he can barely believe it, he clings to it with everything he has. Every lingering touch, every slow smile, every late night conversation. Because he likes you, too.
-
The situation is delicate. You don’t want to push Bucky too far, too son. But you can’t keep it in any longer.
It’s a late night, and you’re out on a balcony, overlooking the New York City skyline. The stars twinkle above you, the lights of the city shine below. It’s too perfect.
“I love you.”
You say it without thinking. Your pulse races as you watch Bucky’s reaction. At first, he says nothing, those dreamy eyes boring into yours, widening slightly. You gulp, worried that you’d gone too far. That he wasn’t ready-
Bucky closes the distance between you.
All of a sudden, his mouth is on yours, his hands tangled in your hair. You melt into him, burying your fingers into his shirt. Your knees go weak.
When you break apart for air, Bucky leans his forehead against yours. Your gazes lock. He beams, and you’re breathless.
“I love you too.”

Song: Hurt by Johnny Cash
Requested by: @humanexile
Warnings: Referenced self-harm. Just a whole lot of Bucky angst. No happy ending here, folks.

-
Bucky wanted to love you. He thinks that he does – but he doesn’t know how to. He doesn’t know how to tell you, how to show you, how to feel anything anymore.
So he does what he’s best at… he runs. Shuts down, shuts everyone out. And that includes you. And he hopes you’ll forget about him, hopes you’ll move on. Because you’d be better off without him anyways.
-
He hurts himself sometimes.
Bucky knows he shouldn’t, but that sting of pain is the only thing that feels like it’s real. And when he’s focusing on that, for just a second, it feels like everything else fades away. That momentary relief doesn’t last long, however, before it all comes rushing back. He still remembers everything; all the things he did. The things he was forced to do, yes, but he still did it. Still lived it. And for him, he doesn’t think there’s any coming back from that.
His thoughts are broken; his mind is a mess. He wonders what he has become. And what you have become. He hopes that you’re somewhere else, someone else. Because you were perfect, and he had seen what he’d been doing to you. And after everything he’d done, all the mistakes he’d made… destroying you would have been the worst. So because he’d loved you, in the only way he knew how, he’d had to leave. He would have let you down, would have hurt you, would have wrecked you. If things had been different, he would have given you everything, given you the life you’d deserved. But he could never give you that. In the end, Bucky was always better off alone.
-
He’d hoped that maybe time would fix him. Somehow, somewhere deep inside, he’d thought maybe it was possible. But nothing could repair what had been shattered so many times before. Beneath the stains of time, the only things that disappear are his feelings. Bucky grows accustomed to the numbness.
His feelings for you, though; those stay. Even though you’d be stranger to him now. He wishes that you’d found everything that he would never have.
Bucky lets himself think back to a simpler time. A time of swing music and record scratches; long, reckless nights and dances. Before all of this, when life was easy. And he swears, if he could start all over again, he’d find a way to be that kid from Brooklyn again; find a way to stay himself. Even if everything had happened the same. Maybe, he thinks, somehow… maybe he’d have found you again. And this time, he would have found a way to keep you.

You meet on a warm summer night, the sun low in the sky. Everything is a blur, except for the look in his electric blue eyes. And you can’t explain it, but it’s enough. There’s a connection, and you both get caught up in the rush.
People could call it what they wanted – obsession, infatuation. But you can’t get enough of Bucky. You drink in his presence; every look, every touch, every movement he makes. You over-analyze every word his says, every message he sends you. You lose yourself in him, in the days and nights you spend together. Soon, half your wardrobe finds itself on his bedroom floor. Every moment is filled with the sound of his voice, his laughter. And in those few rare quiet moments, you find yourself wondering if he can hear the pounding of your heart.
-
Bucky’s head is fuzzy, pulse racing. He doesn’t know what you’re doing to him, but god, he’s not objecting. He feels so many things that he’d never imagined he could feel again. Just being with you gives him a high – you make him happy, giddy even. You make him laugh again. You make him feel alive. You are everything he needs, and he wants more.
So he spends every minute he can drowning himself in the sweetness you. What starts out as a crush, a fascination, quickly transforms into something more, and it hits him hard. If he was a beautiful disaster, you were a work of art. One that he always wanted to admire. The most magnificent thing he’d ever seen.
He prays that the summer will never end.
-
You spend the rest of the summer days in a dreamy haze. The weather gets colder; the days get shorter. Time goes too fast. But the spark remains, the flame of what you feel never dies. It burns brighter, longer. You want to spend every summer, every season with him. All your hopes, desires; you want to share them with him too. You want to give him everything.
So one late night, while you lay beside him, you talk, you giggle, and you muse sleepily about your future.
“Let’s see the world,” you mutter, wrapping a strand of Bucky’s long hair around you finger. He watches you, a glint in those brilliant eyes.
“We could go to Paris, see the Eiffel tower, the Louvre…” you ramble, stifling a yawn.
Bucky lets out a low chuckle, and brings your fingers to his lips, pressing a soft kiss there.
“I’d go anywhere with you, Doll,” he whispers huskily, his breath dancing across your knuckles.
You grin at him, and he smiles back dreamily. Your eyes trace the contours of his cheekbones, the sharp lines of his jaw, the softness of his lips. And once they finally close, as you fall asleep to the sound of his heartbeat, you realize that you don’t have to go to Paris to see a masterpiece.

Bucky knew that he would never be prepared for this moment. But it comes anyways.
He hears the words coming from your mouth, sees the gravity in the expression on your face – but he can’t believe it. It can’t be real.
He’s trying so hard to listen to you, but he’s struggling to hear over the deafening sound of his heart shattering. His whole world shattering.
He can’t tell if the wet streaks on his face are from the rain or from tears. He wishes he could speak, say something, anything, but he can’t – he doesn’t trust his brain.
And so he lets you go.
-
Bucky has been all over the world. He’s seen so much more than he ever thought he would. He’s seen how the world changed.
But through it all, only one thing remains constant. He still thinks of you… all the time. Because every time he goes somewhere new, all he can think of is the places you used to say you wanted to see. The places you were supposed to go together. And he feels that ache in his chest again. After every mission, after the adrenaline wears off, no matter where he is – that loneliness overwhelms him, and he can’t feel anything except for how much he misses you.
Bucky knows that he’ll never get over you, his heart will never heal. He’s always going to want you back.
-
He’s off in a strange country when it happens. He hears someone laugh. And time stops, everything stops – because he swears that it sounded just like you. He can’t breathe, can’t think. But when he turns abruptly… it isn’t you. Bucky’s heart drops, breaks all over again. Of course it wasn’t you. But even after all this time, he can’t stop himself from hoping, from wishing. It had been so long since he’d seen your face.
The last time… He tries not to think about the last time. Tries not to think about every detail he had memorized of you; the pain on your face, the anguish in your voice, even what you were wearing. He remembers it all. And he especially remembers all the places where he went wrong. He shakes his head, long strands of hair falling into his face, trying to clear it from his mind. It doesn’t work. It never works.
Later that night, Bucky wakes from a nightmare. Instinctively, he reaches to the side, reaches for you. But he’s met with nothing. It hits him too late that he’s alone in this bed. That you’re not there to hold him, to comfort him like you used to. His chest tightens; he clenches his hand into a fist, tries to bite back the sobs that are threatening to escape. And when he finally does fall back asleep, he doesn’t have a nightmare. No – instead, he dreams of you. And in his dreams, he’s happy.
-
Bucky’s dreamt of this moment a million times. But he’s still not prepared for it when it happens.
Because no matter how often he wished for it, he never dared to think that it could be real.
He comes home late one night, exhausted from a grueling mission. It’s raining. He spots a figure outside his door, and freezes, nerves on edge. He tentatively steps closer… and then his heart stops.
It’s you. And it takes him a second to convince himself, but you’re real.
And when you see him, you tell him that you’d missed him too. You confess to him the words that run through his brain every moment. This time, Bucky feels like he’s going to shatter from happiness.
And so he lets you in.
