i think it needs to be understood right away that the insane asylum in fortnight mv is not meant to be an aesthetic. it's mean to be a depiction of how taylor was made to feel.

her breakup with joe was EXTREMELY quiet and really we only figured it by speculation. of course everyone had their theories and ideas about how and why it happened. and while most swifties will stand by taylor through anything there were of course those who were shocked that things could have fallen apart with the same guy she wrote rep's love songs about. i mean in public joe still hasn't revealed any terrible vices. add that with the huge amount of spotlight they're in and yeah i'd feel like i was going crazy too

THEN we add in the matty healy (aka ratty) situation. which is arguably what fortnight is about since a fortnight is two weeks and that's about how long we think she dated him. and at that point she was on tour (the biggest music tour in history, very likely) and literally more in the spotlight than ever before. and she starts dating this guy after one of the biggest hearbreaks of her life and literally everyone hates him. like.... yeah, i'd feel crazy too. especially when things did end and basically the whole world is like "told you so."

THE ASYLUM IS NOT AN AESTHETIC. SHE FELT LIKE SHE WAS GOING CRAZY AND NOW SHE'S DEPICTING THAT IN AN ARTISTIC WAY. PERIOD.
