When I finally took her Tylenol. Red and white capsules. I swallowed. One by one. Until ½ the bottle gone. Hospital size. I passed out in the hallway. Where my mother and brother walked over me for two days until I woke up and replaced each red and white pill from the sample packages on the sill… So tonight I held little Mike and remembered all the things we shouldn't have to know while we smoked a bowl together just like we did when I was eight. A friend of mine asked about sending their child to their bio parent, when the child was old enough to say "no," and had asked not to go back. I have very strong opinions about this, and I think my answer is important enough to share here. This is what I said: "Don't force your children to go back to a place where they feel uncomfortable. Ever. My mother repeatedly sent me back to a man she thought would be a good father figure. When I was five, after only being there a few times, I begged her not to make me go back. In front of him. I was crying. I couldn't tell her why. She made me go. He raped me that night. And continued to do so, sharing me with his friends, for the next five years. I was raped and trafficked for five years, because my mother demanded I say what I couldn't. Your kids are telling you something, too. Listen to them. Honor and respect them for it. Give their voice the authority it deserves. Don't make them go back. That's my take." I would add: Also, honor their bodily autonomy. Let them not give hugs; let them say "no," and make it matter.
