Doctor Who - Why the War Doctor doesn't work
When the Ninth Doctor was on our screens, the clear implication with the Doctor's new Time War backstory which gave Nine so much depth was that this dark, aggressive, cynical and harsh personality, especially before his character development, was a glimpse into the person that the Doctor was forced to become during the Time War; and it was a very non-Doctor person, a soldier.
The War Doctor strips that implication and depth away by being this thoroughly tired but non-aggressive, grandfatherly man who still cracks smiles, not much different than the nicest Classic Who Doctors, and whose "Doctor no more" actions and compromises end up being Tell, Don't Show. :P

Can you imagine the War Doctor that we got onscreen as the person who the Ninth Doctor was before he met Rose, back when he was caught in the Time War? As the person who Nine was echoing whenever he conversed with the Metaltron Dalek, or when he sentenced Cassandra to death, or when he harshly snapped at Charles Dickens and Rose for not being as stoic-headed as him about the Gelth before he caught himself?
Because I can't.

I like the idea of a Vulcan character who constantly does very reckless things so her human crewmates think she's strange but then she always has a logical explanation she delivers with absolute confidence.
"No, it was perfectly logical for me to jump out of the shuttle at that time. I had a breathing apparatus, and I was certain I could seal the subspace rift by hand before the Romulans opened fire. This was the only solution that would result in zero casualties. I might have died, but giving up is illogical."
She's known as one of the most fearless members of the crew.
Other Vulcans try not to acknowledge her.

As much as I love the Murder Drones series that we got, when looking back at the pilot and how different it was from what we got with the rest of the series...
Does anyone else just feel they'd love to see a Halloween-style reboot/RWBY: Evermorrow-style alternate continuity which only regards the pilot's events and diverges from everything after: where there's no planet-eating Robo-Satan, where there's no retcon and the humans on Copper-9 really did wipe themselves out through their own stupidity and where JCJenson really are the Greater-Scope Villain who incompetently built and sent the disassembly drones to wipe out the workers' "runaway AI" and then run out of oil, where Thad is still one of the main characters, and where the story after the pilot is still about Uzi following up on her ambitions to take the war to JCJenson while more DDs like we saw in the pilot ending are arriving?
