Step 1: Oh look, Leo and Calypso fell in love. This is what happened in the books and I am neither questioning nor complaining (much).

Step 2: I’m going to change a few things about Caleo in my headcanons so I like their relationship better, but it’s still basically the same story.

Step 3: Okay, the fandom was right. I definitely prefer Valgrace or no partner for Leo, and he’s totally aroace. But Caleo is okay, and I still think Calypso and Leo should be friends. :)

Step 4: Wait… actually Calypso is really mean to Leo all the time. How did I not notice this?? She kind of sucks.

I hate how people accuse Percy of forgetting about Calypso. He made the gods promise to free her and he was under the impression that they would.

It makes sense that Calypso would be upset/angry with him because she's isolated and didn't know if he even tried to help her after he left. That makes sense to me.

But the gods went back on their promise. And everyone holds Percy responsible. He was just a kid, freshly turned 16. Like what was he expected to do? Babysit the gods to make sure they held up their end of the deal? He shouldn't be expected to do that.

Not to mention even if he would've thought to check up on Calypso, he spent 6 months of his sixteenth year with no memories of his past. He literally had no way to help her. Hera stole months from him.

Off on a little bit of a tangent, like, I hate the sort of thing when one or both of them absolutely hate each other's guts with exactly zero interest (not to say a good enemies to lovers arc can't be done, it's just there are some that are better than others) and everyone else (either in the universe or outside) just goes 'oh, you'll end up together, you're just misunderstanding each other'. Like... Maybe they are, but the point still stands that I SEE NO UNDERLYING INTEREST. THEY GENUINELY AREN'T INTO EACH OTHER

Going back to Leo and Calypso

Calypso's had her heart broken time and time again. I feel like she was just going through the motions by the time Percy came along and she definitely doesn't want a relationship when Leo shows up, although part of that is probably because she feels like the gods are just laughing at her by sending her this scrawny kid to fall in love with. She shouldn't have been shoved into a relationship with Leo in the first place, even when he showed up to get her off Ogygia. I feel like them getting together was a slapdash 'everyone needs a romantic partner' mixed with a good helping of the 'damsel in distress' trope, where the hero always gets the girl he saves

As for Leo, he hasn't had a stable life since he was eight. To put it in perspective, he has literally not had a home (a home, not a house) for half his life. And I'm not even gonna go into his insanely self-deprecating mindset that we get from his chapters. This boi needs therapy, not a relationship. I feel that he is looking for a relationship to 'fix' himself. After all, 'normal' guys have girlfriends, so if Leo gets a girlfriend, then he must be normal, right? (Although I am gonna point out that he didn't fall in love with Calypso bc she's pretty. He actually hated her for the first part bc she was actively a jerk to him. He learned his lesson from hitting on Khione)

So yeah, Caleo should've been platonic, I didn't talk about it but Jasiper should've been platonic (and I don't like Leo x Piper either) and forced romantic relationships in media suck

Imagine if Leo and Calypso didn't fall in love but instead just...talked? If they befriended each other? Because Calypso is eager to find someone to vent to and really, Leo needs to find someone to share his sorrows with,and who would understand his insecurities better than a girl who was left alon in Ogygia for so many years with every person she falls in love with having another whom they have to return to?

IMAGINE THE IMPACT ON THE READERS IF CALEO WAS PLATONIC, IF LEO WAS SAILING AWAY IN A BOAT HE BUILT PROMISING ON THE RIVER STYX HE WOULD COME BACK FOR CALYPSO BECAUSE SHE DESERVES BETTER AND IS HIS FRIEND, AND HE KNOWS FIRSTHAND WHAT IT'S LIKE BEING THE SECOND CHOICE AND SHE DESERVES, FOR ONCE, FOR SOMEONE TO LET HER OUT???THE PLATONIC IMPACT, THE MEANINGFULLNESS AND FRIENDSHIP OF THAT
