"what did students do before chatgpt?" well one time i forgot i had a history essay due at my 10am class the morning of so over the course of my 30 minute bus ride to school i awkwardly used by backpack as a desk, sped wrote the essay, and got an A on it.

six months later i re-read the essay prior to the final exam, went 'ohhhh yeah i remember this', got a question on that topic, and aced it.

point being that actually doing the work is how you learn the material and internalize it. ChatGPT can give you a short cut but it won't build you the the muscles.

I had to ask a lot of things to my usa friends in the last 1-2 years cause I had no idea what they were or how they were problematic. and i'm still learning! We all learn in time and learning it's a flow so you never stop, but not knowing and ignorance are not *inherently* bad. They're just a (hopefully temporary) lack of knowledge. What's important is that people never stop learning and changing for the better, right? someone might be a super genius in, idk, physics! but be completely ignorant on internet slang or different diseases or lgbt stuff. Maybe there were not spending time on the internet, or had no easy access to it. Maybe they live in a country where gender and lgbt stuff are still taboo topics. Hell, I live in Italy, so a country that's supposed to be a first world country, but it's so rooted in ignorance and catholicism that you CAN'T talk or reason with 70% of people of gender and lgbt topics or mental diseases / neurodivergence. And i'm speaking from experience.

But again, this does not mean that someone can be ignorant but not willing to listen or change his mind and way they act. Witch-hunting when someone doesn't know will only probably make thing worse; like blaming children for not knowing better too. Be kind, explain and try: you could be surprised about how people are willing to at least say "huh, ok, didn't know! cool!''. One step forward is always better than nothing, but they probably won't take it if someone does not teach them or make them interested on the topic.

As OP said, "im not saying you have to educate everyone you meet on the street, but for the love of god, you need to recognize when someone's actually trying to hurt you and when someone is just not really sure what's going on."

reallllly feel like some of you have to start understanding people are sometimes going to make mistakes and not understand something and not know things and it's going to slot them in a perfect place for you to scoff and call them problematic and evil and they're not even going to know why.

Stopping yourself mid-conflict to change your perspective is allowed! It’s okay and normal to be mid argument with someone and realize you disagree with your own stance. Often I find myself and others caught up in trying to win the argument (not the point of arguments!) or too embarrassed to back down and be wrong. I promise there is so much more pride in going “Stop! I’m wrong. I hear you and I see how I wasn’t in the right and I want to amend my view” than digging your heels in.
