Exactly!!! As someone who is also pretty far on the aro-ace spectrum, I understand why people get jaded with platonic relationships getting seen as less meaningful than romantic ones, at least when it comes from a place of genuine exhaustion (eg, with amatonormativity). But just because two characters enter a romantic relationship doesn't mean that they are trading in their friendship for smut, like some type of designated mating pair. If done right, it can greatly complement their friendship (but of course, we can still see equally complex and supportive bonds in platonic relationships, it's just a different flavor).
But whether they are besties or romantic partners, what matters most is that they are happy and supported. And while they may be fictional, I believe this matters more than what we as fans want.
It is aggravating seeing people using the idea of 'friendship' or 'sisterhood' as a smokescreen to hide their bigotry. Yes, platonic relationships are just as important as romantic ones. But if someone is *only* using this assertion when criticizing same-sex relationships, then they don't actually care about friendship!
Case in point, Yang and Ruby have a *fantastic* relationship! Yang literally raised Ruby after Summer disappeared and Tai shut down (for several years). Yang traveled across Anima, facing down a crime lord to find her sister. She supported Ruby when she was at her lowest after the incident with the hound, and literally threw herself in front of Neo to save Ruby's life. And her support for Ruby over boba tea? Absolute peak. And yet somehow, Yang is a 'bad sister' because she dares to have a life of her own. I can pretty much guarantee that these dunderheads would not be making this argument if she was dating a man, instead of Blake. Especially since many of these same people touting the virtues of platonic relationships are simultaneously angry that Blake and Sun have a healthy platonic relationship, rather than a romantic one.
But, there will always be those who seek to spread harm. At the end of the day, they are just making themselves miserable trying to bend the world to their draconian views. Meanwhile, RWBY and similar shows will continue to foster an inclusive array of relationships.
As much as it frustrates me when people believe romantic relationships are somehow more valuable than platonic ones, I also don't understand why someone shipping characters who are close friends together (f/f or m/m) is seen as diminishing their relationship.
like, the characters are still besties. the romance is built off their deep bond, the friendship is why people ship it
I'll see it under edits a lot, comments like, "finally, someone who understands they're JUST FRIENDS" or "why are you ruining their friendship?"
And look, as someone on the aro and ace spectrums, I really understand frustration with other people devaluing platonic bonds, I truly do. However, such statements often devalue friendship within them ("just friends") and assume the people who ship them cannot possibly comprehend the complexities of the relationship simply because they see it as romantic - which is not the case. tbh sometimes I end up shipping a pairing because the only people thinking deeply about their bond and posting about it are the shippers! (that's what happened to me with eremin lol)
uh anyways we know the answer is primarily homophobia, probably mixed in with some genuine frustration about amatonormativity. It sucks that the language aro/ace people have for commenting on this issue is so similar to the rhetoric other people use to poorly conceal their homophobia. There is a genuine discussion to be had about how romantic and sexual relationships are valued over platonic ones and placed on a pedestal, but they get lost in the sea of bad-faith comments.
For instance, I do sometimes see the bond between characters be reduced to their romantic connection, even in well-intentioned analyses. The "would friends look at each other/treat each other like THIS?" style of posts also often rankle me because yes! I do look at my friends with adoration, and we do hug and we do go out of our way to support each other. Yet, those are traits I enjoy in ships, so I can't even get too mad lol. The problem is when that type of affection is thought to be relegated to romance.

Long have I pondered a response worthy of this post. But what can I say but magnificent!! Thank you for creating this :D
Putting my animation diploma to some real use for once and animating my girls
Definitely had some challenges with this one as it's a fairly technical shot, but I'm proud of where it ended up!

I'm so glad Yang did not go off on Blake when they reunited in Haven. She was hurt, (probably) angry as well, but she did not yell at Blake or act in a threatening way. Which definitely was such a big relief/green flag for Blake after what she's experienced with Adam in the past.
I don't know if this was a fully conscious choice on Yang's side (we've seen her go off on people before who have hurt her, she is temperamental af), but the way she's treating Blake is so considerate. Even when they're in the barn in V6 and Blake offends her, she does not even raise her voice.
Yang knows Blake, she is aware of her past and she treats her only with the gentleness she deserves <3

Behold! FairGame comic!!! Clover and Qrow fit the roles of the Happy Prince and his Swallow friend eerily well, I must say.
The prompt for class was to pick a fairytale and give it a new genre. And like, fairytales, retold stories, what choice did I have really but to do rwby?
Go read the original story by Oscar Wilde, all the comic’s text is a direct pull from his writing, and plus then you can see my vision. I have the whole script planned out in my brain, where Qrow learns to be less jaded by helping Clover, and the ending kiss brings Clover dramatically back to life (instead of killing Qrow, like in the actual story) bc magic happy endings idk.

... And here I thought I was the only one who thought so! Ruby might not openly endorse Robyn like Nora, but Ruby has difficulty expressing herself during the Atlas Era. During the victory party, while Ruby was watching Robyn speak on stage, I got the same sense that they were not all that unlike. Robyn even shows some of the same social awkwardness as Ruby. But also a lot of the same energetic determination, sense of purpose (protecting those who cannot protect themselves), and indomitable will.
Ruby, Robyn, Cinder, Salem. The parallels between them really don't get talked about enough.
(For that matter, Ruby also has a lot in common with Winter)

I feel like the fact that Robyn is basically an older version of Ruby is something that doesn’t get talked about nearly as much as it should be…

In the 2012 era, there were three artists who had a dream. To build a universe and make every part by hand. I love how they decided then and there to deviate from the straight and standard path to create a sapphic relationship in a time when such relationships were virtually unheard of within animated series. This was 2 years before Korrasami's shattering reveal, which through trial and tribulation, broke fiercely defended norms on what was considered "appropriate" within media.
I love that RWBY endeavored to bring out a sapphic ship in a time when such relationships were repressed. I love how this goes with RWBY's themes of individuality, choice, and self-actualization.
But most of all, I love how this was such a slow friggin burn, that in the time it took for Bumbleby to grow from seed to canonical realization, we not only got Korrasami, but also Sulemio, Lumity, Caitvi, Catdora, and countless other sapphic ships XD
CRWBYYYYY, I'm begging you! Please give us more bees🥺

Gotcha, no worries about that. I'll withdraw that question in case you decide to read or listen to the books. I think they could totally take on the ace ops, if only barely. But my money would still be on RWBY, barely. I hope we get to see that in v10. Add it to the infinite v10 bucket list.
Here is an alternative question. If, instead of all four members of RWBY falling into the Ever After, one survived and made it to Vacuo. Who out of the group do you think would cope the best (or be the least likely to self-destruct)? Sorry, a bit of a dark question.

Okay, I'll bite. But first, I'll ask one via reblog. RWBY is a series with amazingly complex characters. But ignoring all that, who would win now (>v9) between Team RWBY and Team CFVY? (Assuming Yatsu doesn't plan on lobotomizing anyone else)
