🤗 i dont like this emoji. this is not a hug to me. this is someone doing condescending jazz hands in my general direction when i am in need of affection. not comforting.

The urge to say, "oh, but it's easy!" is why IMO teachers below the college level shouldn't teach their best subject. Honestly, college teachers should ALSO be teaching some of their less-good subjects, the things they had to work to learn.
I'm very good at English, and that is why I shouldn't be an English teacher, especially at the level of teaching people to read but also just...in general. Because I learned to read before I have conscious memories. Because my family was reading Shakespeare out loud to me and taking me to performances before school thought it time to touch the stuff.
Which means I don't know how to struggle with these things. I don't know how to learn to read on purpose; I was read to every day of my little life, is how it happened for me. That's not a method you can duplicate in the classroom. It's, you know, great that it's obvious to me, but the whole point of teaching is to provide something to people for whom it is not obvious! I didn't need an English teacher - not that I never benefited from one (thank you Mrs. Hartmann for teaching us about subject/object pronouns and sentence diagrams), but that I would have reached a high level of literacy without one. So English teachers shouldn't be focused on students like me, should they?
My high school chemistry teacher was an excellent chemist, definitely overqualified for the job on paper. But my god she could not teach. If you couldn't understand from the book, or from the one way she was able to explain it, you were out of luck. Because it was easy.
#a good point#agreed#education#I guess the problem is that there are teachers who don't care about subjects they weren't good at themselves#you need to understand the struggle but also believe in the success

some of you think ‘nuanced’ only means ‘morally grey’ and I’m here to tell you that actually straight up good characters can still be nuanced and unapologetically evil characters can still be nuanced. the character doesn’t have to be an anti hero or morally dubious to have depth. they don’t even have to feel sorry about their crimes to have depth.

Jack/Michael college AU, met as exchange students
FASCINATING. when i was writing this little ficlet i was imagining peggy as an intl student in nyc and jack as a student there, too, with michael as kind of a ne'er-do-well type who gets by thru various nefarious means. i feel like this au isnt that but it is that adjacent, in that college jack has the trappings of being an on-top-of-the-world guy but is secretly a trainwreck, whereas michael by all accounts lacks much reputability, but actually has his shit together.
i want jack to be politician bait. political science something major, double minor in international law and military history. he went to naval academy prep for most of his high school. he's growin' up to be a senator on his way to being president one day.
michael in university is ... undecided maybe. or, like, he keeps changing his course of study, and dropping classes, and taking classes that have no bearing on what he's studying. he's a dance major or something rn i feel. (maybe he knows dottie?) he's also a year older than a bunch of the other students, because he came back to university after a year or so of mysterious "illness" that he refuses to talk about.
as exchange students ... i love this concept ;; idk who i want exchanged to whom tho !!! its so good either way
anyway they argue a lot. peggy is horrified when she comes home from class one day and finds them making out on her couch (YOU BOTH HAVE YOUR OWN APARTMENTS! WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS HERE?) but quietly she's pleased that this means two of her favorite people are getting along better.
(they're not really getting along better, theyre just hooking up now.)
