House Systems in Astrology
One of the students in the astrology class I’m teaching asked about different house systems.
There are lots of different house systems. The three I’m most familiar with are equal houses, whole sign houses, and Placidus.
Whole sign houses is the earliest system in Western astrology and the system still used by Hellenistic astrologers. In whole sign houses, the first house starts at the beginning of the sign where the ascendant is.
This system has a long tradition, and the the math is very easy to do in your head. You can say for sure that if someone has Aries rising, they are going to have Virgo in the 6th house. It is not, however, very nuanced mathematically, but that goes along with that type of astrology. In Hellenistic astrology, math doesn’t have as big a role to play. You don’t measure degrees by angles. You measure them by signs, so all planets that are in Virgo will be sextile Scorpio, no matter where the planets are in the signs.
Equal houses is the next oldest system. In this system the first house begins with the degree of the ascendant, and then subsequent houses are measured out thirty degrees after that. So if your ascendant is at 15 degrees Leo, your second house will begin at 15 degrees Virgo, 3rd at 15 degrees Libra, etc.
This system also has relatively easy math, as long as you can remember the degree of the ascendant and the degrees of the planets, you can easily figure out in your head which house each planet will be in. The location where the chart is cast (the birth place in birth charts) also has more of a role to play in the house placements of the planets than in whole sign houses.
Placidus is the newest system. It came into use only in the 17th century or so. (This is debated.) Placidus takes physical location much more into account than either equal houses or whole sign houses. In the other two house systems, the houses are all 30 degrees. In Placidus it varies based on how close to the poles you are.
Placidus is the most popular house system at the moment in the English-speaking world. It’s also the default on astro.com, which makes it even more popular. It was my favorite house system for a long time because I liked how the different house sizes made it really easy to see what a person was majoring in. If a person has 1st and 7th houses taking up 2.5 signs, the odds are very good that they’re majoring in the tension between the needs of the self and the needs of relationships.
The house system I’ve been using the most recently is equal houses. I started using it because my chart makes more sense to me with the planets in those houses, but I only switched from Placidus to equal houses recently, so I’m still very much exploring it. I’ve been using it with clients, and the feedback seems to be good.
A more technical astrologer would be able to give you a scientific explanation for why you should use one house system over the other. In my experience, people choose the house system they do because it’s what their teacher uses, it’s what they’ve always used, they like the way their own chart looks in that model, or because their clients respond well to that system.
My advice if you want to explore different houses systems is to go into extended chart selection on astro.com and play with the different systems with your own chart and see what resonates for you.
All of the house systems are “true.” They just reveal different aspects of the character.
