It's crazy how much better I know my characters now than when I started the book. Especially my main character.
Sorry girl I'm about to ruin your life.

rawest fucking hozier lyrics in no particular order:
i’d suffer hell if you’d tell me what you’d do to me tonight
heat of her breath in my mouth; im alive
i’d be the choiceless hope in grief that drove him underground
idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on his sword
and when the earth is trembling on some new beginning with the same sweet shock of when adam first came
every version of me dead and buried in the yard outside
the stench of the sea and the absence of green are the death of all things that are seen and unseen
if I was born as a blackthorn tree i’d wanna be felled by you, held by you, fuel the pyre of your enemies
some like to imagine the dark caress of someone else, I guess any thrill will do
before the wave hits, marveling at god; before he feels alone one final time and marries the sea
betray the moon as acolyte on first and fierce affirming sight
i have never known peace like the damp grass that yields to me, I have never known hunger like these insects that feast on me
screaming the name of a foreigner’s god; the purest expression of grief
sweet and right and merciful, i’m all but washed in the tide of her breathing
but you don’t know the hell you put me through; to have someone kiss the skin that crawls from you
so i try to talk refined for fear that you find out how i’m imagining you
my head was war, my skin was soaked, I called your name ‘til the fever broke
be still, my indelible friend, you are unbreaking
remember me, love, when i’m reborn as a shrike to your sharp and glorious thorn

"The cards whispered as he shuffled them, then spread them out in an elegant fan across the coffee table in one smooth movement. His hands were beautiful, distracting even. Veins trailed fine lines beneath his tanned skin, his tendons shifted like cords beneath silk. They moved with confidence and grace, like they knew exactly how to touch you."

HEAVY on number 6
things about being a writer no one talks about
Naming the villain/antagonist after that one person irl who annoys the hell out of you just so you can like brutally murder/traumatise them :3
Commas are a drug and we are all addicted
When you've been doing this for so long you can type with your eyes closed perfectly yet make 50 thousand typos per page while having your eyes open
Wanting literally everyone in the world to read your story one day, but when someone you know asks to read it you scream and Panic
I have voices in my head, but in order to make it seem normal I give them names and make them do things in a word doc
Getting All the ideas the moment you step out of range of any sort of note-taking objects
Listening to your book playlist and creating a pinterest board for your characters and convicting yourself this is writing
24/7 always both "this work is terrible i'll never amount to anything" and "i'm a fcking genius wow i'm incredible" simultaneously every second.

Is "write what excites you" bad advice?
Am I strange for writing my whole book completely in order, like chapter 1, 2, 3 and so on?
I keep seeing the same writing advice, if you have writer's block just skip ahead to write what you want to write and that's better than no progress.
But what happens when you've written all the fun bits and all that's left is hard work? How do people motivate themselves to get that done?
I can't make myself do it, the empty gaps stress me out too much, and slogging through the hard bits with an exciting scene a few chapters away feels motivational.
Its probably off-putting to me because of my background in academic writing. Very little of that was fun to write but I just had to get it done, and I found writing out of order very messy.
Is anyone else out there feeling this way too?

I'm sure most writers already know this, but after writing a whole draft chapter it's been really helping me to read it out loud and kind of act it out.
You'll notice awkward dialogue really quickly, things that don't make sense, typos, missing dialogue tags etc.
Give it a try!

A Victorian diary entry from my WIP, all feedback welcome
Wednesday 24th July, 1895 – Week 2 of Excavations
I had the most peculiar dream last night. I stood before a great burning pyre, the logs stacked high and blazing with a fierce heat. I could feel the warmth upon my face as the flames leapt upward. It was a perfectly clear night; thousands of stars lit the heavens. Further down the coast, the silhouette of the broch stood stark in the moonlight. Around the pyre gathered figures in strange attire — skins and tunics, some wearing masks. They sang and chanted and wailed.
I felt an extraordinary pain in my breast as I watched the fire consume its charge — as though a scream had lodged itself within my very bones. I sensed the stillness of a future bereft, of dreams unfulfilled, of empty arms. An ache that seemed to echo across the millennia. Who was it that burned upon that pyre? And why, as I looked through the eyes of another, did I feel their sorrow as if it were my own?
Perhaps I was unsettled by the protests of the local farmers earlier in the day. They had left dead lambs at our gate, a grim warning regarding Father’s intention to sell the island to a foreign investor. It was a ghastly sight, the poor creatures’ bright eyes pecked out by the rooks that circled above.
Stranger still, upon the following morning I related my dream to Mr. Bates, and proposed as an experiment, that we investigate the ground where I had seen the pyre. No sooner had the turf been lifted than we found scorched earth, and amongst it a scattering of white, calcined bone. Most curious indeed.

Felt like today sucked a bit compared to yesterday but I still managed 1033 new words.
I'm struggling to stay away from my phone for long, maybe I need to start turning it off or putting it in a different room to help avoid it better.
Any tips welcome!
