Eeeh my brother participated in IMO and I have his study books so whenever I got bored I asked (irritated, he says) him about the theorems described there. But I am not as good as him :(
Fellas, fellianas, and fellows, I come with a math query:
In the square numbers, there is a pattern in the ones place that goes: 0, 1,4,9,6,5,6,9,4,1,0 — essential it’s 0, 1,4,9,6,5, read to the right then to the left .
In the tens place (and all higher places), the pattern is a sum of changing rates
0+0+0+0+1+1+1+1+2+2+2+2+2+2+3+3+3+3+4+…
Every 3 or 7 changes the rates (5+-2) likely to due with these numbers correlating to a nine in the ones place mentioned before.
Example: 04-> 09->16->25->36->49->64->81
Square numbers can be written recursive using these two tricks or with floor functions (this problem is one I made a couple of years ago so idk where the formula is in my many desmos files)
The question at hand is: could you do the opposite? Could you find a function recognizes a pattern and spits out a function?
My best guess is that a Bernoulli number approximation taken in length determined by a base 10 log checker will be needed or is atleast a possible answer. Medical issues have restricted me for a long time so I’m hoping one of yall can help me with this.

this works, I guess: d₁(n) = [d₁(n - 1) + (2n - 1)] mod 10
But as you noticed, that doesn’t describe just the digit behaviour — it’s more about modular residue cycles.
Yes, you can build functions for patterns like this — but they'll be modular, recursive, or digit-wise, not “pretty closed forms.”
but for this problem, I’d say Bernoulli approximations are adjacent, not central. The recursive relation is more powerful here than Bernoulli per se. So Bernoulli polynomials won’t directly help unless you’re looking at sum behaviour, not individual digit cycles.
