Idk if I've posted this before, but last year, I discovered the perfect cover for any fish out of water character. Just have them say they were in a cult.

I'm not shitting you it's that easy, and it can cover EVERYTHING. Lab grown clones, aliens in hiding, people on the run, monsters among us, time travelers, you name it, this covers it.

An X-23 or Superboy like lab grown clone with no birth certificate?

Just say their mom joined a cult before they were born, and because the cult didn't believe in governmental authority, no one got them one. Same with school and medical records.

A Supergirl or Asgardian like alien trying to live amongst humans but has spent a significant portion of their life on another planet with a different culture and language despite it binging similar to one on earth?

Just say they were in a cult and are still trying to learn the proper use of the language they're speaking and correct social edict because in the cult, some words had completely different meanings and how they're behaving was completely common amongst the people they knew.

A Fae afraid of something completely common?

The cult had a superstition about that, they don't want to risk it.

A demon with a really weird name?

It's what the cult gave them.

A time traveler who doesn't understand any kind of technology around them?

The cult didn't have anything more advanced than a wheelbarrow and a grindstone this is blowing their mind.

Just a regular dude on the run who's super paranoid all the fucking time?

Say they're afraid the cult is going to try and force them to come back. Any friends or acquaintance they manage to make who aren't in the know will try to help them by keeping an eye out and pretending they have no idea who they are if anyone asks.

As an added bonus of this cover is the built-in excuses for every question anyone could ever ask about the cult. Either have them say they don't want to talk about it or be both super vague but also incredibly specific about it. Example:

Q: What was this cult called?

A: I don't know if we had an actual name. We just called ourselves the family.

Q: What about the people there what were their names?

A: We called anyone our age or younger brother and sister, even if we were married. Anyone our parents' age was mother, father, aunt or uncle. The oldest members were just called elders.

Q: That must have gotten confusing.

A: Not really. Context and adjectives did a lot of the heavy lifting. We did have names given to us when we came of age, but we were always told only to say them if it was an emergency or when addressing one of the elders.

Q: Where was this cult?

A: I don't know. I remember trees so tall that even now, I would not be able to reach the lowest branch. A small river, or maybe it was a creek, I'm not sure what the difference is, that's where we got our water and washed our clothes. When I left, I walked for a long time, I walked so long my feet began to blister, bleed, and ache. I didn't know where I was going; all I knew was I needed to leave.

It's literally perfect.

And if any aliens, time travelers, demons, fae, or whatever are reading this, you're welcome.
