Just finished up #Relic, the #DouglasPreston and #LincolnChild novel that the 1997 movie #TheRelic was based on. It’s pretty much identical to that film, save for a few character additions and a couple of plot points, but for the most part it follows the same ancient monster loose in the grounds of a museum story. It’s enjoyable to a degree but I found it outstayed it’s welcome during the third act, much of the finale dragging out and ending with an unsatisfying conclusion. I’ve read a lot of comparisons to #MichaelCrichton’s #JurassicPark book (it’s there on the cover) but I think that it did everything infinitely better than this. Especially the science, which feels integral to the story, but here it just feels to serve one purpose - exposition. Apparently there’s a sequel titled #Reliquary which follows #SpecialAgentPendergast further and explores the mythology of the #Mbwun creature further, however I doubt I’ll be picking that up. #SpiderManFarFromHome did a lot to convince me that the #MCU will have ZERO problems going forward post #AvengersEndgame. The webslinger’s latest big screen adventure ties up loose ends from the huge cinematic climax that @marvel took decades to craft and manages to give #PeterParker a whole new set of problems to overcome - including how to deal with the death of his friend #TonyStark and the arrival of @jakegyllenhaal’s compelling #Mysterio. This film is hilarious and heartwarming, whilst @tomholland2013’s Spider-Man takes on what feels like a far more significant threat than what was seen in #SpiderManHomecoming. Without giving too much away, the villain of this movie is one of the most interesting and unique adversaries ever seen in the MCU, realised in such a way that they feel taken directly from the pages of the comic books. The action sequences involving Spidey and this character are so inventive that they may be the best of ALL of Spider-Man’s live action outings. It’s a charming film that gives Spidey the spotlight without forgetting all that he’s been through before and the world that he exists in, namedropping the #Avengers and other characters at times that feel relevant and not at all forced. To see Spider-Man in various European locations and away from his usual stomping grounds of #NewYork is also superb, allowing the webslinger to feel as much an international espionage agent as he does a friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. This movie RULED. The #SamRaimi films are still my personal favourites and this Peter Parker hasn’t managed to emulate the tragedy of the character that #TobeyMaguire did, but this is a different take and one that totally has its own identity. Finished up the #WhatWeDoInTheShadows show on @fxnetworks and WOW - I was skeptical that it could be as enjoyable as the movie but SWEET BABY JESUS it was fun. The mockumentary setup is ace, the whole cast is superb and utterly hilarious, whilst the plethora of cameos (some recurring) are truly inspired. The humour is much the same as the film and the situations the vampires find themselves in are even more ridiculous. Whilst @kayvan_novak and Matt Berry are solid as usual, @natasiademetriou really steals the show in almost every scene that she is in. It was also amazing to see the movie characters, played by @taikawaititi, #JemaineClement and #JonathanBrugh appear (albeit briefly). Worth a watch if you’ve seen the movie or not! #DarkPhoenix is a whimper of a superhero blockbuster, never once justifying its need to exist as all of the misty eyed cast look so unhappy to be on screen. The film isn’t fun, thrilling, tense or amusing - not even once. The stakes are sold as ‘Jean Grey can’t control her powers and she might do something bad’ and it’s that’s just so hard to care about when the films simultaneous protagonist and antagonist is so one dimensional. Over-powered characters in this franchise are bland, they limit everyone around them and thrust the story into a narrative dead end. Previous major players in this X-Men series of movies are reduced to bit parts or left idly standing by whilst the so called ‘interesting’ stuff happens elsewhere. That plus the intentions of certain characters flip reverse without much of an explanation and the ‘villains’ of the film have even less of a final destination. There are so many iconic characters in this film and not one of them gets to do anything cool. Everyone just bows to Jean’s overdramatic temper tantrums like a bunch of losers. At least #Apocalypse kind of had a purpose - didn’t it? #GodzillaKingOfTheMonsters was great for grand scale monster battles, phenomenal special effects and some truly iconic visuals. This film is occasionally a riot, but unfortunately it’s mostly a bore - the majority of its running time a slog between action sequences. Ultimately, the film is hindered by a paper thin plot where one of the dozen or so human characters spell out their actions in monotonous detail as if the audience is as much of a imbecile as they are. Millie Bobby Brown’s character is pretty much pointless and her inclusion at key moments of the story is just a distraction from actual interesting stuff happening on screen. Obviously a movie like this is nothing without human drama, but the motivations of many of the main characters are so mind-numbingly stupid that even some of their deaths feel like a relief. Mainly a disappointment but it’s a film that’s a blast during the behemoth battles and for that reason alone it’s worth a watch.
