# WHAT IF I DIED

dialogue prompt: “I want an answer, goddammit!” with any ship?

Mantis had been secretive for weeks. They’d been vacationing on a shit planet that had a “beach” as Peter described it, and it was hot. Nebula stayed inside and didn’t want to go outside into the water–she had no problem with it, but she…there were things better left unseen. 

But back to Mantis. She had been going down to the beach, poking things in the sand. She and her brother had made an impressively stupid sandcastle, with the name “Quill” scratched on the front with what looked to be a little caved-in spot also up front. 

“It’s our family crest,” Peter says. “It’s supposed to be a lion.” 

“You are so foolish,” Drax responds. “And have no artistic abilities.” Gamora laughs softly at that, giving Peter a soft look. Disgusting. 

“Dinner’s nearly ready, get the plates for me?” 

Mantis does not tell Nebula what she has been doing on the beach. She has spots on her nose. They look…nice. Nebula doesn’t want to tell her that, so she just eats the noodles and ink that they got and deals with it. 

Nebula gets a hug every single day. She’s not sure when it happened. But one day, Mantis was pulling her into a hug before she left somewhere, or before she decided to do something else. 

Nebula is pulled into a hug before Mantis goes to play Marco Polo with the rest of the team, a stupid game that Quill invented or some shit. Nebula doesn’t know. She grabs a sun shade and decides to try and read. Gamora likes to read, so maybe it isn’t too bad. 

It is wonderful. Nebula can understand things, it’s amazing, and–

She’s hot as shit. The two suns are blazing, and Rocket shows up. He got rid of his vest. 

“It’s out here, cyborg. You’re gonna need to cool off eventually.” 

“I’m fine, rabbit.” 

“You’re not the only one with scars,” Rocket says. “So quit being a little bitch about it. Mantis is gonna be fine with it.” 

He turns, and she can see scars slashing, unfeeling all across. 

She asks Mantis what she’s doing. 

“You’ll know tomorrow,” Mantis says. “For now, secrecy.” She smiles that stupid little smile that she always has, the one that Nebula likes for some equally stupid reason–and sashays away. 

The next day is agony. Nebula decides to finally try beach volleyball–she drives Peter a foot into the ground, so that’s fun, but Mantis sits with Gamora. They talk for a long time. Gamora even puts an arm around her. Must be serious. 

It’s after dinner. Mantis is sitting in the ship, playing some kind of game with Drax. Nebula watches it for a moment, until Drax gets up for food. 

“I want an answer,” Nebula asks. “About what you have been doing.” Mantis brightens, grinning. 

“Come. I’ll show you.” 

It’s dusk. The sky is turning a rose color, looking like a wild contrast to Mantis. Nebula follows her, nearly smiling at how enthusiastic Mantis is. 

There’s a small little display. It’s a building made of seashells, pearls, anything found on the beach. 

There’s “Nebula” written, a heart at the end. 

“Do you like it?” Mantis asks. “I asked Gamora if you would like it, because I wasn’t sure, but if you don’t, we can destroy it, and–” 

“It’s perfect,” Nebula chokes out. “It’s absolutely perfect, Mantis.”

karen pushing the agenda of #that ship feels like such a betrayal to zoe, their characters’ relationship, and to both gamora and nebula individually, i agree. i noticed in the france interviews, #that ship was never mentioned, which happened to be when zoe was with them in the press tour.

i love karen so much possibly too much. she was the first person who brought me to the guardians of the galaxy, but she is pushing such a heteronormative ship 😭 we need more representations of female and male friendships THAT ARE NOT TAKEN ROMANTICALLY and peter and nebula should be one of them, they are literally best bros, bonding over gamora and they care for each other at their lowest points. but i think if rocket was a human karen would be pushing rocket x nebula too LOL. not only that she is pushing another horrendous ship like kraglin x nebula oooo no please do not free nebula from these men she is a lesbian TO ME and so many people, that headcanon is so dear to my heart 😭 if not lesbian then she is aroace i think nebula herself would be so repulsed by men in general

I'm not gonna complain about a certain ship but I wanna complain about it. Not because I want to dictate what people do but because I'm sick to death of the same patterns every single time you have specific characters in play. Every.Single.Time. I know if roles were reversed it wouldn't be happening like this. I'd bet my savings account on it. (I'm also more genuinely frustrated this time around than I have been the many times in the past because for one character it's literally ignoring their relationship to the only people that have been shown to care, love and want to prioritize them in some way after something terrible happened. The two most important relationships for them)

also shoutout to @starmora who so helpfully pointed out to me that after just 1 year after vol 1's release (so aug 2015), the starmora ao3 tag only had a little over 90 fics. less than a month after the vol 3 release and less than a year after all the post-endgame media featuring both nebula and peter has released, their ao3 tag already has almost half the number of fics that starmora had after a full 12 months, and arguably starmora had a lot more actual canon basis throughout vol 1...like ppl have truly lost the plot here

i'm trying to think of all the potential contexts that could explain the differences in how long it took each ship to achieve the numbers of fics it's gotten...ao3 was definitely pretty commonly used in mcu fandom by 2014/2015, and other ships with far less basis in mcu canon had tooooons of fics back then as well (any ship involving loki, darcy, or bucky comes to mind lmaooo)

so it's a bit suspicious that this is happening to a canon interracial ship where the woc died, as if the natural progression from that is the woc's white sister dating the woc's white male widow. like, ermmm...

then take into account fandom's age-old tendency to erase woc characters and, well, i think we can just do the mental math on this one, unfortunately 🙃
