alone

There’s something beautifully heartbreaking about being very alone.  Alone in a way that you used to have someone to share meals, ideas, and music with.  And now that person is not there.  But it’s beautiful because you get a taste of what it’s like to be born and to die.  You come into this world, and you go out of this world, utterly alone.  No one holds your hand as you come through the birth canal and someone might hold your hand as you are dying - but once you are dead, as far as we know, you are alone out in the great unknown.  And that is beautifully heartbreaking and beautifully lonely.  And to experience that well of sadness here on Earth after you’re born but before you die — it’s rich, it’s deep, and powerful, and so lonely.  I feel so lucky that in this moment I get to experience that dark loneliness that comes from a love who is gone.
