Water is the source of much of Nirayne’s magic and she feels at home under the sea. When her ship, the Darkstorm is not sailing across vast oceans, she loves to dive and explore underwater. There, she has discovered many amazing things hidden under the waves, and also made some unexpected friends…

Character: Nirayne “Rain” Waveborn, Half-Sea Elf Storm Sorceress (plus sea elf lover)

Nirayne is a half-sea elf storm sorceress, her magic coming directly from the sea and the sky. The proud seafaring dwarves of clan Waveborn raised Nirayne as their own after finding her as a baby adrift in her crib at sea.

Nirayne grew up in Wavetown, one of the floating cities of the sea dwarves, exploring remote and exotic islands as Wavetown traveled the oceans.

When she was old enough, she boarded the legendary enchanted ship Darkstorm, joining the rowdy crew of the infamous dark elf pirate Captain Kenthor “Rubyeye” Webcrest. With Nirayne’s magic, Captain Kenthor unlocked the Darkstorm’s true potential as one of the fastest ships in the seas of Naam.

Nirayne’s magic also animates the tattoos on her body. The starfish on her ankle always points north, and the wave patterns on her arm and her thigh change to reflect the surrounding weather.

Nirayne is one of my own characters in Theomachy!

She knows how to relax and have fun in-between the dangerous missions away from the safety of her underwater home! Aeolnora is a heroine from the Theomachy setting! Here, she’s wearing the Fabulous Sea-Garments, a homebrew item I’ve made!

Character: Aeolnora, Sea Elf Hydromancer and Storm Cleric

Many believe that the sea elves have vanished forever from the face of Naam, and some think they never existed at all. But in reality, the sea elves thrive in the oceanic isolation of their mythical underwater kingdom: Amphithalamis. Protected from prying eyes and the influence of the warring gods, the sea elves wait out the Theomachy, the final cosmic war between the gods, before resurfacing again, only sending out magical agents to subvert the power of the gods and vex their devout followers in secret.

Relying on her powers of prognostication and her command of wind and wave, Aeolnora is one of those few sea elves who dare swim away from the magical safety of Amphithalamis to peer at what lies beyond. Her missions to spy on the servants of the gods have opened Aeolnora’s eyes to the beauties of the world, and when her missions are over, before she returns to Amphithalamis, she often rests at places other sea elves would not even dream of.

Using her divination magic, Aeolnora has found rare places where the power of the gods is weak, blind spots in their not-so-omniscient gaze. These pristine shores where land, sea, and air all come together are Aeolnora’s secret, which she shares only with a few select friends she has made through her travels away from Amphithalamis. Together with her friends, she can enjoy brief but precious moments of carefree fun and relaxation that make the war between gods seem distant.

Character: Orelyn, Dark Elf Abjuration Wizard and Archaeologist

Orelyn is a dark elf archaeologist, searching for ancient civilizations in the caves and deep places of her world. Naturally shy and reserved, she focused on her discoveries and her studies of abjuration magic. She spent most of her life shunned and alone, far away from her hedonistic people. Yet, one day she made a groundbreaking discovery that might very well have a huge impact on her world. Now, she's on a quest to discover the whole truth about Stalanos, the sleeping god of the Sunken World, and tell everyone who needs and wants to hear about it.

Orelyn’s adventures led her to overcome her inhibitions and seek out some very powerful wizards. With the aid of her allies, she ventured deep into ancient sites of power before daring to step into the light of the Overworld. Patient, compassionate, and intelligent, Orelyn can't resist getting in trouble to help those in need.

Since venturing in the Overworld, Orelyn has managed to uncover magic secrets and make positive changes while staying out of the eyes of the warring gods and their servants. Naam can be a hostile place, but Orelyn is at ease with her closest friends and allies.

Orelyn is one of my own characters in Theomachy!

In this god-blasted world, dark elves are refugees who upon being cursed by the gods, sought refuge in the Sunken World underground to escape their terrible wrath. These dark elves are not inherently evil. They are mostly apathetic and sometimes hedonistic recluses who seek to shut the rest of the world out. Very few leave the relative safety of the Sunken World for the terrible Overworld where the gods fight each other for dominance.

Neket didn’t expect to find a vampire lurking in the vast, dark decks of the nautopolis White Darroya, a ship so large it carries an entire city. Unprepared, she has to rely on her illusions and her wits to outsmart the bloodsucking undead. It seems like the vampire has found her, but is this really Neket, or one of her clever illusions, placed there to lure the vampire out of hiding?

Character: Neket, Moon Elf Illusionist Wizard

Neket is a gifted young wizard from Timinhur, an elven city with strong ties to the moon. She has studied all schools of magic but has a certain inclination towards illusion magic that twists the perception of reality and dazzles the senses.

After remaining trapped in a cryophagus for sixteen years, Neket had to flee Timinhur to escape the Selenian Idea, an ambitious coup that turned her nation into a sterile and oppressive regime, and transformed most of its people into spellforged constructs, able to survive on the barren moon of Naam.

Now on the run, Neket must rely on unlikely allies to remain free and perhaps find a way to help more of her people escape the oppression of the Selenian Idea.

The characters, from left to right and from top to bottom:

Lock Distant Rain, a Tabaxi Bard who came from a small inland village called Dew-hurst. The youngest of three kittens he was always looked after, when his parents disappeared, he and his middle brother Cloud were looked after by the eldest Timber. Timber eventually married and had a kitten of his own, Cloud invested his time into alchemy, and Lock studied music and eventually found a fiancée by the name Persephone, but he never stopped wondering about the fate of his parents.

Thus, with a heavy heart, Lock kissed Persephone goodbye and began his search, travelling from port to port in search of answers. He eventually made his way to the city of saltmarsh where he learned of a possible clue to his parents’ whereabouts.

Malakor Seaborn, a Retired Human Warmage who believed that Procan, the god of the sea, spoke through him and showed him visions of the future. Leaving the army, he went to the coast to live a life of solitude whilst trying to interpret these visions. Sadly, it was something far more sinister than he could ever have imagined, as dark powers warped his very being, making his true form that of a lobster-like monster.

Honesty, a Tiefling Rogue who used his silver tongue to scam others out of their valuables. Determined to free a devil from the nine hells, he had a tough moral choice to make as the temptation to betray the party became more and more irresistible.

Tali, a Wood Elf Druid who spent more of her life away from big cities and close to nature. The last of her grove, she eventually had to move on and join the group as the real dangers that threatened her world became clear. She ended up making many life-ling friends along the way.

Coros, a Triton Warlock who was being manipulated and haunted by the dark powers bestowed upon him by his patron, an ancient Kraken. After Coros’ ship sunk and he almost died at sea, he turned to his people’s creator-god for help, renouncing his tyrannical patron to become a devoted paladin. Now, he seeks the light while constantly being pilled towards the dark.

 Character: Anufer, Princess of Per-Menoth, Sun Elf Arcane Fighter (plus Nema and Amen, the sphinx kitten twins!)

As the heir apparent of the legendary elven kingdom of Per-Menoth, Princess Anufer always strove to be an example for her fellow sun elves. Elegant yet reserved, regal yet studious, Anufer was destined to become the next queen of the sun elves and defeat Pelia, the warring goddess of the sun.

Princess Anufer’s coronation was to take place the day that culminated her much anticipated royal wedding to Prince Ankhator of the elven kingdom of Khemhotep, a historic event that spanned ten decades and took place across hundreds of ceremonies between the royal courts of Per-Menoth and Khemhotep.

However, on the day of her coronation, Anufer tasted treachery as the kingdom of Khemhotep descended whole to the deepest hell, Pandemonium, as part of a mad scheme to claim ancient demonic magic and dominate the multiverse. The descent transformed the citizens of Khemhotep into demon-elves, and Anufer’s betrothed, now the Demon-King Ankhator, proposed her to become his demon-queen. Anufer refused the gift of demonic power and used her dual training in the arts of magic and war to escape Khemhotep just in time to retain her elven essence. Now, Anufer must find new allies in a world that has forgotten elves and seek to right the wrongs of those sun elves who betrayed their very nature.

Character: Lala, Vanzal Alien Princess and Ambassador, in her Desert Suit

It had been twenty-two cycles around the planet’s sun since she was born, she’d probably be over thirty cycles of her own sun if they had used that to mark age. Lala probably knew this planet better than her own. Her entire life had been spent watching her mother, Kala, work with the Terrans. Humans they called themselves in order to lift them up. The Humans fascinated her. Her mother explained to her that this was the first time the Vanzal had been called up to bring a species into the fold, part of the galactic community. Now she was about to go to descend and actually meet them. She was ecstatic with excitement.

Character: Lady Iltani, the Silver River, Moon Elf Moonwalker Bard

Hailing from a long line of magically inclined diplomats of the elven nation of Timinhur, Lady Iltani’s fate as one of the senior ambassadors of the nation had been decided since she drew her first breath under the pale moon. She spent decades mastering etiquette, fine magic, and the intricate diplomatic protocols between the elven nations.

But Iltani’s heart yearned for freedom and careless fun. At night, she watched in silence as the legendary moonwalker bards of Timinhur danced under the moonlight through the streets of the capital, having left behind their responsibilities to indulge in all of life’s finer pleasures.

Unwilling to escape her duties, but also unable to forget her dreams, she devised a plan to accommodate both her obligations and her passions. For a few nights each month, she leaves her inhibitions in her austere office and dons a crescent mask made of silver, becoming the mysterious moonwalker known only as the Silver River. No one knows the identity of the Silver River, and the moonwalkers don’t even care to pry as long as they enjoy her fine company.

However, after living as a diplomat by day and as a moonwalker bard by night for a few years, Lady Iltani has started to suspect that she is not the only upright citizen to don a mask and leave etiquette behind to become a moonwalker. Character: Kiama, Angelborn Celestial Warlock of the Elusive Cat Deity Elurus

Kiama is a confident and cheerful half-angel who has spent most of her life on the fluffy clouds of Felidise, the idyllic dimension of Elurus, the elusive cat deity. Raised among playful felim and other mortal rescues, she knows little of the harsh world of mortals. Yet as she gets older, her heart yearns for adventure, and she feels the draw of wanderlust.

Born from a forbidden union, Kiama was abandoned as an infant. As he roams the dimensions, Elurus sometimes takes pity on “stray” mortals and rescues them from shelters, such as orphanages, leaving a magical charm in their place. So, when the elusive cat deity saw Kiama as a tiny mortal baby, he decided to adopt her, leaving a Lucky Cat Figurine in her place.

Now, Kiama is ready to roam the dimensions herself, fueled by wit, passion, and a desire for adventure.

Character: Darius Fengate, Tethyrian Echo Knight

Darius Fengate’s birth was the last time Amanda Fengate was ever directly regarded by her birth family, a distant branch of the Von Kessels of Drakkenheim. Her brother, Mortimus Valthar Von Kessel, was said to have taken great joy in being the one to deliver the news to her as she lay recovering with her newborn son. His father, Ajax Fengate, tried his best to provide for his newborn son and distraught wife. However, his career as a merchant was never truly successful, and by the time of Darius’ adolescence, he had disappeared at sea, his ship lost in a vicious storm off the Sword Coast.

After his father’s passing, Darius took to helping his mother pick up the pieces of the business, and it was in this semi-official position that he met Reverie. As an exotic boy with strange eyes, no small amount of coin on his person, and a desperately well-kept outfit, Darius seemed the perfect mark for the ambitious and self-aware beauty with a devil’s horns and a god’s stolen power. Head-over-heels he fell for her and was filled with pride inflated by her advances. He lied about his position as a low-end merchant widow’s son and used his access to a patriar’s empty summer home to consummate their shotgun wedding.

Perhaps their connection would have ended soon after the dalliance and would-be robbery if not for their brief misadventure after being caught in the patriar’s bed by servants in the morning. All deceptions were soon laid bare, and affections were quickly turned into the trauma-bound start to a fast friendship. He was introduced to the twins Urrai and Katan, and he soon became complicit in so many of their cons and schemes. If not for his mother’s own simmering racism towards the Thieflings, all might have been considered ideal for a few years. However, despite the years of growing together, change was inevitable.

What began as a series of threats to the Thieflings from anti-Tiefling authorities within the city ended when Darius, identified as one of their accomplices, was captured. His mother was quick to turn on the Thieflings, landing Darius a forced position in the Flaming Fists and the Thieflings a swift exile from the City of Murder. Though it is likely the Thieflings themselves might not know why they were caught, Darius suspected his mother’s hand for some time, and recently had his beliefs confirmed to his disgust and guilt.

In the years that followed, Darius eventually left the guard and took up the life of a mercenary and occasional bandit, resenting in part the loss of his friends and the perceived betrayal of his mother. In a stroke of ironic luck, his “exile” proved his salvation in the purges of the Von Kessel family. Though his mother was spared for her distance and lack of would-be standing in Amn, the assassin’s efforts after him proved fruitless in Baldur’s Gate, and nearly fatal in the wilderness, stopped only by a mysterious mirage of Darius’ own form that came to his aid, a mirage that felt like Reverie’s magic.

Now on the hunt for the one who sent the assassin and driven to understand just how and why his essence seems bolstered by Rev’s magic, Darius travels south to find answers and enact revenge.

Character: Lyrana Blackwing, Dark Elf Bard

Lyrana Blackwing is a kind, flamboyant, and truly optimistic dark elf bard. Among her hedonistic and often cowardly people, Lyrana was one of the few dark elves brave enough to risk the wrath of the vengeful gods by venturing to the Overworld in a quest to spread hope with her art and beauty.

Lyrana loves compliments, being the center of attention, spreading love and joy, and also sexy paladins. While she dislikes violence, she knows that sometimes persuasion is not enough to turn the tide of battle against the warring gods of Naam. She knows that love, beauty, and carefree fun are rare commodities in a world ravaged by the cosmic struggle between the warring gods: Theomachy…

Together with saintslayer and paladin hunk Edron Loys, and legendary halfling chef and transmuter Roula Stroumboulidou, Lyrana helped save the city of Neutro (now Salvatia) from godly annihilation and slay the aberrant demigod Neutro who lurked in the caverns below. Now a demigodslayer, Lyrana is hailed as one of the greatest living heroes of Theomachy.

Lyrana is one of my own characters in Theomachy! You may recognize her from lots of other sketches, illustrations, and homebrew!

About the Theomachy setting:

In Theomachy, vengeful gods fight each other for ultimate control of the universe, while the mortals of Naam struggle for power on a dying world. Divine magic is a force without expressed will that the warring gods hoard and wield against each other, threatening to undo the entire world. Clerics and paladins are either devout followers of the warring gods or theomachists who fight against the gods, liberating divine magic and using it against them.

In this god-blasted world, dark elves are refugees who upon being cursed by the gods, sought refuge in the Sunken World underground to escape their terrible wrath. These dark elves are not inherently evil. They are mostly apathetic and sometimes hedonistic recluses who seek to shut the rest of the world out. Very few leave the relative safety of the Sunken World for the terrible Overworld where the gods fight each other for dominance.

Characters: Sarita of the Monastery of the Quiet Grave, Demonborn Cleric (plus Abadía Rosario, the Benevolent Abbotess Lich)

Sarita is a young and determined Demonborncleric sworn to safeguard the eternal peace of the grave. As an orphan of demonic heritage, she was at great risk from the warring gods as well as from ignorant villagers. The sisters of the Monastery of the Quiet Grave took her in without a second thought and raised her with love under the watchful eye of Abadía Rosario, the mysterious and benevolent abbotess lich whose worldly mission is to end the plague of the undeath.

With Abadía Rosario’s blessings, Sarita has been preparing to set out and fight the undead agents of the warring gods in the Island Nation of Lurastine and beyond after this year’s Festival of the Eternal Rest. As she gets ready for the festival, she talks with the kind abbotess about the perils, but also about the wonders she might encounter in her mission.

Neket is getting ready to meet Lord Sorthan Copperlane, the influential half-elf captain of the massive nautopolis (city-ship) known as the White Darroya. As one of the very few elves of Timinhur who have escaped the oppressive “Selenian Idea” regime, she is a valuable and precious ally to Lord Copperlane, but there is more than politics and magic at stake here!

Character: Neket, Moon Elf Illusionist Wizard

Neket is a gifted young wizard from Timinhur, an elven city with strong ties to the moon. She has studied all schools of magic but has a certain inclination towards illusion magic that twists the perception of reality and dazzles the senses.

After remaining trapped in a cryophagus for sixteen years, Neket had to flee Timinhur to escape the Selenian Idea, an ambitious coup that turned her nation into a sterile and oppressive regime, and transformed most of its people into spellforged constructs, able to survive on the barren moon of Naam.

Now on the run, Neket must rely on unlikely allies to remain free and perhaps find a way to help more of her people escape the oppression of the Selenian Idea.

Character: Ayra, Nature’s Daughter, Wood Elf Druid

Ages ago, Ayra lived happily as an ordinary wood elf hunter in the ancient forest of Sylendil until the endless armies of Gorg, the self-proclaimed god of war, burned it to the ground. Desperate and about to be killed, Ayra sought refuge in the mystical Otherwood, a dimension of raw beauty where Nature reigns supreme and time bends like a branch in the wind. Her unshakable love for the ancestral forest and the mortals she left behind manifested as primal magic in Otherwood, transforming her into a powerful druid.

Reborn as Nature’s own daughter and charged with restoring balance in a world ruined by cosmic war, Ayra has returned to spread the gift of druidic magic to those willing to oppose the warring gods.

Ayra is one of my characters who became a legendary hero and became part of the broader lore in the Theomachy setting as an important NPC. She is now vastly powerful, commanding transformative magic that empowers others to become champions of nature. In game terms, Ayra grants nature-themed blessings (including relevant feats) and even allows characters to change their subclass to become champions of nature (usually druids, some ranger subclasses, paladins of nature, or fey warlocks, as well as any subclass that makes sense lore-wise.)

About the magical markings on Ayra’s body:

The Wood elves of Naam often have nature-themed markings to signify their connection to Otherwood. The original elves, known as dryads, ancient elves, or first elves have such markings by the magic of Otherwood. Ayra became lost in Otherwood and transformed from an awkward hunter to a powerful druid. Her living markings signify her transformations and intensity of Nature’s magic as it surges through her.
