And Tony, meanwhile, can't stop thinking about that kid. He doesn't know why. But he just can't get those sad eyes out of his mind.

So he tells FRIDAY to cover the funeral expenses because maybe that will stop this churning pit of guilt in his stomach like he was the one who killed that kid's dad -- and FRIDAY tells him that the kid has no records.

Tony is surprised. He investigates a little and finds some records but not much. This Peter Parker kid is basically a ghost. And before he knows it, he's hooked. It's a low stakes investigation and Pepper doesn't even blink at it. It's just some kid and he clearly needs help or he's running from something.

It takes Tony almost no time at all to realise the kid is Spider-Man. Tony stares at the information he has of Spider-Man in his database and the information he has of Peter Parker and knows that something here is wrong.

How would Tony have pulled together all this data on Spider-Man -- from measurements on his senses and strength abilities to his genetic makeup -- but have next to nothing on Peter. How did he never find Spider-Man's identity before?

The more he digs, the more weird it all looks. The weirder it looks, the more obvious it becomes that his memory and FRIDAY have been tampered with.

He goes to Dr. Strange.

He punches Dr. Strange in the face before leaving.

And then he goes and picks up his kid.

Peter controlling his reaction, trying not to be the start struck fan tony was always so dismissive of. But he can’t help the tears that well up.

and tony notices. and goes “what’s wrong, kid, they not pay you enough here or somethin?” trying for a quip.

and all peter can get out is “My dad died today”

and it wasn’t today. but it feels like it was. and tony’s face drops, and he gets out of there quick, and peter knows he just lost what might be his only shot to get a picture together with the guy who he saw as a paternal figure.

and he has to carry on with his shift.

harley met tony stark and realized how much of a weirdo the guy is. he quickly decided to believe every cracked story he hears about the guy, because if he’ll use harley’s sisters baby watch and upgrade potato guns, he probably DID do all that other weird stuff.

peters so used to not being believed that he doesn’t really care who he tells about his past. they won’t believe him anyways. they don’t remember peter parker and they don’t know anything about him, what’s the downside? so when he drunkenly tells a guy at the bar that tony stark used to be him emergency contact, he assumes the nod is a polite one and nothing more.

harley, intrigued, makes sure the drunk stranger gets home safe. He gives him water that he seems to desperately need, and he offers him food that the guy eats like he’s starving.

and that’s how peter parker wakes up in harley keeners apartment to a whole lot of questions and a guy that, for once, seems to genuinely believe and want to help him.

Except for when he's the vampire king -- which is arguably WHY it was such a sensational twist. I genuinely screamed when it happened. Dick Grayson being evil was THE biggest twist DC ever could have come up with and it stands as being my favourite.

The only thing funnier than that it's canon that Nightwing vouching for someone gives them a massive boost in the superhero community is that they've named the phenomena. The Nightwing Bump. And that not even Batman is immune to this, Mr. "I don't trust Superman" over there is like, "Hm. I guess I'll acknowledge you since Nightwing likes you." Every superhero basically outsourcing their people judgement to Dick Grayson is 1000% accurate. Also EXCUSE ME DICK GRAYSON IS THE CLOSEST THING THERE IS TO A UNIVERSAL CONSTANT--HE'S ALWAYS KIND, COOL, AND THE GUY EVERYONE WANTS TO LIKE THEM. It's like that time the other alternate universe Superman wanted to destroy our world and Batman refused to go along with it because Superman couldn't say his world's Dick Grayson was a better one than our world's. DICK GRAYSON MAKES THE WORLD BETTER JUST BY BEING IN IT.

But in all seriousness, up until a week ago I was pretty sure I wasn't going to do Hanukkah this year. Buuuuut I really pushed hard and went down a rabbit hole with the MCU so I do think I'll have things to post. New stories! Yeah!

I'd like to post some MCU between then and now, so we will see how Hanukkah is looking closer to the date. I'm hoping another fandom sparks my interest at some point. Mostly it's just been MCU or OG stuff the past few months and I'm super happy with the progress I've made in my original content.

They’re fighting over custody 😔

I’m obsessed with the idea of Tony slowly getting to know Peter just by listening to his voicemails (after Peter gets Tony’s number and starts sending him updates instead of Happy). As time passes, Peter is convinced that Tony hasn’t listened to any of them so he starts getting more and more unhinged and saying way more than he would ever say to Tony’s face and Tony is just lurking, growing more and more fond of this kid that rambles to his voicemailbox.

Peter’s still a shy bean to his face, so he doesn’t mention that yes, he actually does listen to the voicemails in fear of Peter stopping.

And then one day Tony slips up and mentions something that Peter told him in a voicemail and Peter is completely mortified. You mean his mentor actually listens to them? He’s heard Peter regale his most embarrassing school stories and gush about his childhood crush on Thor? He thinks his life is over until Tony panics and tells him that receiving the voicemails is one of the best parts of his day. Peter stares at him like a lost puppy and Tony shies away from the feelings and everything’s as awkward as usual.

But that night, a voicemail comes in, and it’s no different than any of the others. Peter yammers like his heart depends on it, and Tony can’t help but feel that it’s an acknowledgement of the fact that yeah, they may have a difficult time talking to one another in person, but they both care, and maybe if they keep trying, they can make this father-son thing work.

And Tony thinks that next time a phone call rolls in, he just might answer.
