just finished muse of nightmares and i simply cannot describe the absolute adoration i have for laini taylor’s work. my heart feels swollen with love for her characters and her worlds. truly a one of a kind author.

what i love so much about laurent’s character? the way he’s written so realistically. at first glance, he’s cold, cruel even. treating his vulnerabilities as a shield instead of something to be held, walls held up so high that people forget he’s even human because of the image he portrays to so many others. the refusal or even inability to let go of the control that keeps him safe. i am obsessed with it. like i get him so much. how the consequence of self preservation is isolation. that you lose so much in order not to lose more, because how can you risk one thing when you have everything left to lose? (in terms of his heart)

and that’s what i love so much about the romance in the captive prince trilogy because damen coaxes him into his arms. he was never forced anything, his walls came down on their own, and when they closed again, it kept damen inside. it’s beautiful. i also love being able to see things in damen’s point of view. the little things that seem like the weight of the universe because laurent hardly shows his vulnerabilities. yet when he does, theyre in doses that make your heart pound. it’s that well-written. even i’m infatuated.

i always hit a slump after reading a book so good that it consumes my entire mind, the brainworms are eating at it nonstop and there’s nothing i can do about it. i cant find anything like it, and if i do, it’s not IT. so of course i will fall into the novel to ao3 fics pipeline (if the novels are famous enough to have fanfics written about it. if not, then i suffer).

i blame the captive prince trilogy as of the moment. although it’s not a reading slump bc i am at a reader’s HIGH, the thing is i have nothing ELSE to read now.

i do believe this is the true definition of suffering from success.

Laini Taylor, Strange the Dreamer

there are so many fantasy novels that are actually well-written that remain underrated…while so many on booktok and where else get spread like wildfire, only to realize that it’s…quite..mundane and sometimes an unsatisfactory read.

ever since i picked up laini taylor’s books years ago, no other fantasy novel has topped her in the list. i’m convinced there’s actual magic in her books because the prose is absolutely magnificent. not to mention the world building is just perfect as well as the plot twists. i wish there were more people who read her works. i love them so much that i’ve had multiple tattoos planned based on her novels.
