More Stories in Less Time

The latest trend in articles and blogging is giving the easily distracted and can’t be bothered reader multiple options.

One website, medium.com, gives the reader a time check for how long it will take to read each post. This is great if you only have a minute and really don’t want to waste time reading a 10 minute story. Just think of yourself getting to the most epic part and bam, you have to stop. At this point, I know, that I would say to myself, “self, remind me to finish reading the story when I have more time.” Knowing how I am, I would forget the story, which website it was on, or just loose interest and go on to the next thing.

Another website is cnn.com. A few of the stories, on their website, are giving the reader tweet size highlights along the side of the story. Death of the hipster, rise of the 'yuccie' is the story I found that featured the highlight. The cliff note was great to some up the story in a bite size look. Yuc means Young Urban Creatives. Great... I’m moving on to the next post.

I like the trend for people like myself that enjoy reading random stories and articles, but does not enjoy loosing half of the day getting sucked in to the abyss of the never ending rabbit hole.

I would like to hear your thoughts on this and if you are seeing more subtle trends moving forward.

A great trend of social innovation!

Samsung is solving real problems. They have created the Safety Truck, a semi truck with a wireless camera mounted on the front, displaying the road ahead on a screen tacked on to the back of the truck. The move is a part of an effort to reduce head-on collisions from passing. An innovative approach to safety. [via]

VIRTUAL REALITY 2.0 / tapping into your brain

This time it might actually work - without that feeling of "oh no... I think I am going to be sick." 

A company may have found a way of going beyond the idea of immersion and achieving true presence—the feeling of actually existing in a virtual space.

The company Oculus has found a way to make a headset that does more than just hang a big screen in front of your face. By combining stereoscopic 3-D, 360-degree visuals, and a wide field of view—along with a supersize dose of engineering and software magic—it hacks your visual cortex. As far as your brain is concerned, there’s no difference between experiencing something on the Rift (Oculus’ flagship product) and experiencing it in the real world.

Facebook bought Oculus back in March, so it has already been making waves.

The first movie is being made for Rift: Zero Point is both an immersive VR film for its viewers and a documentary about the researchers, engineers, designers, and developers behind the emerging field of VR. http://tinyurl.com/pj3lgnn

Facebook launches Audience Insights, a marketing tool offering trends around current and potential customers

The idea is to give marketers trends about their current or potential customers across Facebook, allowing them to tailor their marketing messages based on what the tool surfaces. The tool gives insights about users in the following categories:

Demographics: Age and gender, lifestyle, education, relationship status, job role, and household size.

Page Likes: The top Pages people like in different categories, like women’s apparel or sports.

Location and Language: Where people live and the languages they speak.

Facebook Usage: How frequently people in the target audience login to Facebook and which devices they use.

Purchase Activity: Past purchase behavior and methods (online vs offline).

The crowdfunding perks included - $250 to get a personalized voicemail from O'Neal, $500 so that Shaq would follow them on Twitter. One lucky donor offered $35,000 so that O'Neal would DJ a party.

Interesting Thought: Could buying a twitter follow from a celebrity with over 8 million followers be a smart business move? Imagine buying a few key twitter followers; Especially if those celebrities/influencers that are only following a few people, and you are one of them. You could actually build the allure factor with your brand, generating a buzz that is saying 'Am I missing out on something great?' or 'Do they have the inside scoop on something big?'

 The Question: How much would you pay for a twitter follow, and who would that be?
