honestly something i feel like people dont take into account with why the anti-authority message was toned down for the sonic movies is that a lot of american kids dont feel comfortable with guns in movies anymore, every person i know under the age of 24 has experienced a shooting drill and a good chunk of the older teens have experienced shooting threats, which has caused guns to change in kid oriented media (like shadows gun being a blaster instead of a real gun), because nobody can get shot maria cant die by gunfire and gerald cant be executed via firing squad. its a different cultural mindset for younger audiences fears

That's a good point! Mass armed violence against children being more directly prevalent in American culture in the 2010s and 2020s than it was in the Y2K era is absolutely a consideration when adapting Adventure 2's story for a PG film. There's a fine line between "reflecting the real world" and "let's trigger our child audience for no particular purpose!"

( To be clear, I don't mean to imply the toning down of Adventure 2's Y2K disdain for the government is a deliberate conspiracy, that's mostly a product of 2020s centrist politics. )

( Although, there is something darkly humorous about toning it ""down"" from "Maria is shot with a firearm and bleeds out" to "A moral objector intervenes, and Maria is instead implied to be horrifically mutilated by shrapnel in an explosion caused by the a laser firearm." An interesting perspective! )

( I should also probably mention at this point that I really liked the Sonic films, especially the actors' performances. They are pretty good for the fundamental limitations of the Hollywood movie format. )
