okay, i've been putting this off.
is there another asian person i can talk to who can vouch for whether or not batgirl (2000) is good? i'm wasian and i can't personally stomach a lot of asian racism, and the fact that cass is super competent but unable to read and has to get help from babs to learn how to read - as well as cass' general speech patterns - keeps putting me off even though it's the comic that's praised far and wide. is this handled well in that comic? are there other issues with this comic that i don't know about and aren't handled well? my asks and dms are open.
other dc fans, if you're not able to answer this question i would love if you could share this and let me know. please don't reply if you don't fit this criteria, i don't really trust a white person's take on whether or not the potential racism is handled well, sorry. discoursing on this post will get you blocked and i'm taking this down once i get an answer.
thank you!

Hey, this isn’t targeted at you specifically, there’s been other people who’ve said similar things so I’m just here to dispel a misconception.
Shiela in no way is being casual. In the middle panel of her expression she is emotionally affected, looking away. I think the idea of her being casual is when she starts to smoke. Cigarettes are pretty commonly used when someone is going through something emotional as a type of regulation. I’m sure we’ve all seen someone attempting to smoke while their life crumbles in media. This isn’t that different.
Shiela in this saga is under duress. She’s selfish, yes, but afraid herself. To say she’s unaffected by Jason’s treatment and death is untrue. She speaks to Bruce right before dying herself about Jason.
(On a note about smoking: Yes and no. DC tends to have morally complex/villains smoke, but the further you go back it’s more common for others to smoke too. And adding on to that, being in a large city (like Gotham) it is near impossible to avoid cigarette smoke.)

Tim's hero worship was largely symbolic. Robin and Jason were a figurehead and ideal, not a tangible person.
