i’ve been to six protests this year, and while they’re growing in size and each one has been bigger than the last, there is a stark absence of young people (~under 40y/o) at any of them.
i was talking with a woman at yesterday’s May Day protest and we were speculating why the kids aren’t coming out. i’m 30, and for the most part, i have only ever known freedom and independence as a woman. sure ive encountered a ton of misogyny, but i was born into a world that, at least on paper, affords me the same rights at men. but so many women (who are not that much older than me) have known what it’s like to not be paid the same as their male peers (equal pay act, 1963), to not be allowed to have their own bank account without a husband’s permission (equal credit opportunity act, 1974), to risk termination from employment if they get pregnant (pregnancy discrimination act, 1978), etc etc etc.
and that’s just from the feminist lens (my personal special interest). but so many folks fought for decades and generations to get us to where we are today. and maybe a lot of younger people don’t have the fear of real lived experience in them to inspire action right now. maga wants to take us back to a time when you didn’t have freedom unless you were a cis, straight, white, christian male.
i know the world we’re born into can feel so certain and constant, but rights are all made up and can be swiftly taken away if not carefully guarded. look at the women in afghanistan, who have experienced a devastating rollback of rights over the past few decades.
Tumblr media
in the 70’s their freedom was on par with western culture. but today, they must cover their entire body, are banned from education past age 12, restricted from holding a job outside teaching/healthcare (and even those jobs are shrinking), cannot appear in media, travel outside their home without a male chaperone, go to the gym, or the park. project 2025 has already made it clear that maga will do the same to us.
progress is only as stable as our willingness to defend it. every right we take for granted was won through struggle, and history shows how quickly they can vanish when we look away. if younger generations don’t step into the fight now, we’ll inherit a world where we’re forced to relearn the lessons our elders already suffered to teach: rights aren’t given, they’re taken and preserved through collective action. the protests are growing, but they need all of us.
if you’re a younger person and you care about saving democracy, but you haven’t made it out to protest or participate in some kind of action, what’s stopping you? not a hypothetical question, i’m really trying to understand so i can convince my friends to get out here.

on one hand, yes fully fuck the elite and their exorbitant, wasteful, and cringey vanity projects. but on the other hand, when i see society collectively turn against women who dare to seek the relevance they once had when they’re no longer the hot new 20-something, i have to wonder how much of it is misogyny and ageism at play. i just don’t see older male celebrities being chastised for their lame/cash-grab/harmful work to the same degree as their female counterparts.
sure katy perry’s tour looked hokey and underprepared, and the astronaut thing was pretty tone deaf. travis scott’s last tour literally killed people, but he’s still private jetting around the world enjoying the success of his latest album and all the brand deals he didn’t lose. post malone’s last two albums underperformed and his last tour got shit reviews. but we all still love our cool chill guy posty don’t we? sylvester stallone, liam neeson, robert deniro, adam sandler (etc etc etc i could go on for miles) have all been playing the same roles on repeat for the last couple decades but nobody’s worried about their careers.

some hobbies i want to get into soon:
stained glass art - it’s beautiful and i think it’ll be a good soft entry into metal working
record collecting - and just listening to albums more intentionally, broadening my taste, studying music as a craft. do you have any recs? so far i’ve listened to taylor swift. what else is good?
coding - i recently discovered neocities and now im obsessively coding my own website. got me learning javascript and daydreaming about designing and writing games someday

a sketchbook/junk journal spread i did last week.
i feel like i pulled some real poetry from this meeting agenda print out. my fave line is “Invisible Group seen.”
i love these two pages next to each other. they’re so different but still tell a cohesive story, visually and narratively. mixed media is so fun!

another sketchbook/junk journal spread. i’m loving the process of cutting up my junk journal materials and rearranging them to create new meaning. can you guess what this logo originally said?
i’m trying to loosen up my art making process and make more decisions in the moment rather than planning my compositions ahead of time. i sometimes feel like i dont have a very creative mind, but being loose and random with my process and letting the story find itself along the way has produced some way cooler and more interesting pieces than anything my brain could have planned. i’m not crazy about this spread, but it gave me several little ah ha moments 🥰

just finished reading The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. god i love books about complicated women who aren’t simply good. ripped through that book in 2.5 days. it got a couple tears out of me in the end ngl.
also a therapist recommended this book to me a few years ago when i was going through my own divorce. i’m glad i didn’t read it at the time because i dont think it would have landed well when i was deep in my feelings.

one of my neighbors, who is a squirrel, has some kind of condition where she’s been losing hair and scratching herself a bunch. it makes me sad because it’s so cold outside and they need their fur to survive the winter. i’ve been putting seeds out on an elevated and insulated platform so she can at least eat and escape the snow for a bit. she’s comes by everyday. i wish she would let me put a lil sweater on her. i love her.

one thing i won’t miss about tiktok is the hyper vigilant awareness i can’t help but keep on my profile’s views. because it’s almost always just a bunch of faceless randos but every few months, ill catch one of my ops creeping. and knowing that im still on their minds after all this time is such delicious poison to me 😋

i fear i may have accidentally caused the tiktok ban because i set a goal to create more content than i consume this year and unfortunately my manifestation powers are immensely strong and unfailing.

huge day at the bird feeder today.
FIRST i had a pair of pigeons pull up. They’re one of my all time favorite species and they never come by my house. but today they did and they were so pretty and gentle with the regulars (mostly sparrows who don’t like to share feeder space) 🥹
THEN i got my first close up hawk sighting! im not totally sure what kind it was but maybe a red tailed. it glided into my garden, big as a frickin chicken and all the little birds who are usually pecking around that area were gagged, nowhere to be found, dead silent (may i carry this powerful energy into 2025 🙏). when it left, it did the most graceful bouncy run into flight and lifted off seemingly without even flapping its wings. just sort of levitated away. it was an incredible sight to behold.
basically, get yourself a window bird feeder for a good time 👍
