“Forgive me, father, for I have sinned.”

He waited for a response but there was only silence. Uncomfortable silence.

He shifted on the hard wooden bench. It creaked loudly but he could still hear the sound of a throat clearing violently on the other end of the divide.

Father Donovan was still battling with his emphysema. He’d smoked for most of his adult life, and probably most of his teenage years. He did quit eventually but it was already too late.

“Go on, son.”

“It’s been…”

He paused again. How long had it been? He started to count on his fingers but knew immediately that he would soon run out and so he stopped. “… Jesus … too long since my last confession.”

“Language!”

“Right. Sorry.” He almost scoffed out loud but then caught himself. He wasn’t even sure why he’d come in the first place. He was starting to think the whole thing was pointless. As if whispering your secrets into the dark somehow absolved you of any wrongdoing.

He crossed himself. He was dangerously close to blasphemy now.

He took a deep breath and went on, even though he doubted telling the rest of the story would erase the woman’s sad and creased face from his mind. “I was in a position to help someone,” he admitted. “To really help them, and I refused.”

He waited for a sound, some small hint of some acknowledgment of what he’d just said but again, there was silence on the other end. He went on. “She was desperate and she came to me for help … and I don’t know … I guess I just couldn’t.”

“But why?”

“I didn’t think it would do any good … that I’d be any good. I figured it was better to not help at all than to try to help and only make the problem worse. I don’t know. Am I rationalizing?”

“But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?”

1 John 3:17. It was one of Father Donovan’s favorite verses, but it gave him no comfort to hear it now. He was having trouble finding God’s love wherever it abided, certainly not within him.

But ... uh, what exactly is in the meat? Because it doesn't take long before the citizens of this Brooklyn neighborhood start to act *really* strangely.

In my last post, I talked about Stone, the lead character in my new series. I will introduce you to the other characters in the coming weeks, but let's talk about the case for a bit. I also mentioned that the case at the center of Cat Scratch Fever is Stone's first major case. Initially, Stone wanted to be a cop, a bonafide New York City police officer (and more on that in a later email). But after only a couple of weeks in the Academy, he dropped out with no explanation and decided to do his own thing instead. Why? Because Stone believes in Justice (yes, Justice with a capital J!). He believes in it to his very bones. And he's learned, painfully I might add, that justice and the law are two different things and are often disparate. Stone has a deep mistrust of institutions. Couple that with a strong gotta-do-it-myself attitude and it's easy to see why he decides not to don the blue uniform. But he soon learns that private investigation isn't for the faint of heart either, especially in the belly of the New York City beast. So is Stone in over his head? When I was a kid I *loved* those Scholastic catalogs we would get in school.

Sidenote: why don't they have that for adults? Well, I guess they do ... Amazon! But it's not really the same. I'd like a nice paper catalog sent to my house. I want to be able to circle the books I want and have them delivered to me. Or better yet, how about a meetup in a nice, local bar? All the adults in an area can meet up and sip and chat while they pick up their books (to recreate the classroom atmosphere, but you know, update it for the grown-ups).

Seriously, can someone make this happen?

The Godfather by Mario Puzo My rating: 5 of 5 stars I read this for the 50th anniversary of the film. And while the film is undoubtedly excellent, do yourself a favor and read this book. There is a richness to the characters, even the minor ones, that is somewhat lost on screen. Michael's tragic, negative arc is so much more of a gut punch when you see it from the pages. A thoroughly satisfying read. View all my reviews

How Many WPIs Do You Have Going At Once?

Typically, I'm outlining/drafting one and editing/launching another.

Right now, I'm working on the drafts for a new 3-book series and the ideas for another, totally different 3-book series after that one.

But...

Over the last few days, a completely different book idea has come to me and it. won't. leave. me. alone.

I believe in writing "from the heat" as much as possible.

I also believe in pushing through until you've finished what you've started.

So should I continue and finish the series I'm working on now? Or should I put that series on hold and see where this new idea takes me? 

I think the concept for my current project is good. But I'll be honest, it isn't exciting the hell out of me like this new idea is.

My left brain wants to finish the books in the order I've set.

My right brain wants to say to hell with that.
