Cole Fanfic: Chapter One
I finally finished the first chapter lmao. I hope you enjoy it! Let me know if you’d like to see more.
“Hurry it up already,” That was the first thing I heard as I woke up. Waking up was never a pleasant experience. I never felt fully rested, sometimes it felt as if I got no sleep.
The only thing shielding my eyes from the bright lights was the figure standing above me. His face became clearer the more the sedative wore off. I had never seen this man before. His blond hair covered part of his face as he was looking down, not at me but the guard that was assigned to me. The guard was the one who woke me up but not by choice as the blond man was pointing a gun at him.
The man pulled out what looked like zip ties from his back pocket.
“Put these on now,” he threw them into the guard’s lap. The guard did as he said but not without talking back.
“They’ll find you, you won’t get far,” the guard said.
“Yeah we’ll see about that.”
The blonde man wasn’t paying attention to me as I was attempting to sit up. He was talking into a phone. The guard was in the corner of my cell now zip tied with tape on his mouth.
“The cell floor is clear I need Jude down here, they’ve still got the collar on,” he said.
The collar around my neck. It’s what they’ve used to keep me in check. If it even looked like I was going to use my abilities they would shock me. Even when they used me for their dirty work I had to wear it.
As I was trying to sit up the man noticed what I was doing. He came to my side to try and help me. I tried to move away from him but my body failed me. He must have seen the fear in my face because he backed off.
“I’m here to help you, I’m going to get you out of here,” he seemed nice but so did the people that took me.
Every part of me was saying don’t trust him. I didn’t want to end up in another bad situation like this one, or worse.
I heard someone running towards us, the man heard it too because he turned away to see who was coming. He stood with his back against the wall so whoever came in the room he could take them by surprise.
A boy came into view who couldn't be older than 14.
“Cole?” this must be Jude. Why in the world was a kid this young breaking into this building?
“Finally you're here, we gotta hurry they’ve probably got more people on the way,” Cole said. Jude jumped at the sound of Cole’s voice.
Jude turned to me, I noticed he was looking at the collar on my neck. He walked towards me and tried to grab it.
“N-no,” I tried to speak. It would shock me if he tried to take it off me. I went to push his hand away but it was more of a light slap as my body was still weak.
“I have to break this thing if you want to get out of here,” he said. How would he get this off my neck? I've already tried everything.
The sound of people yelling startled us all. Cole left the cell probably to see where it was coming from.
While I was distracted Jude took the opportunity to grab the collar on my neck. I prepared myself for the pain. But there was no shock, within seconds there was a cracking sound and the collar fell off my neck. The only way he could have done that is if he was a yellow.
My neck felt naked without it on, but at the same time I felt like I could finally breathe.
I wanted to thank Jude but Cole came back in looking very worried.
“Good you got it off now we have to go,” he continued, “I'm sorry but I’m going to have to carry you out as it seems you still can't walk,” Cole picked me up not waiting for me to respond.
Who did these people think they were? There was no way they would even be able to get me out of the building.
We had three floors to get through before we could get outside. Judging by the yelling that sounded like it was right behind us they already cleared the first three.
As we made our way to the first floor I took note of all the guards that were unconscious. How were they able to over power all of these highly trained guards?
Before we even reached the first floor I knew there would be guards waiting for us. There was no way they would allow their most important prisoner to be taken.
There were at least 15 guards blocking our way out. Jude looked to Cole like he was asking what they should do. They stood no chance against them. Judging by his looks, Cole was too old to have been affected by IAAN. And Jude’s abilities couldn't work on guards who had no electronics on them.
“Put prisoner 2367 down and get on your knees,” one of the guards commanded. Even if they complied there was no way they would let them live.
Nobody moved. Cole's skin was hot like his blood was boiling. His heart felt like it was going to come out of his chest. It seemed like they had no way out of this. I was never going to leave this place was I?
Before the guards could even move half of them were thrown from where they were standing. The impact from hitting the ground knocked them out.
A girl with blue hair was standing in the entrance. Her hands were out towards the guards who were on the ground. One of the guards that were still standing tried to grab her but she was too fast for them. In less than two seconds the rest of the guards were being thrown through the air. So this must be the person who took out all those guards. Looks like she’s a blue.
“Vida!” Jude sounded excited to her.
“Thank you Vida,” Cole said. As we exited the building there were two black cars waiting for us. The blonde woman in the second car looked relieved when she saw us. Vida and Jude went to the first car and Cole took me to the car with the blonde woman.
Cole laid me down in the back and then hopped into the passenger seat. Once Vida and Jude’s car drove off we followed.
I was able to sit myself up against the car door as we got farther away from that awful place. I actually started to feel happy that I was finally out of there, even though I was now stuck with strangers.
“I thought I was going to have to leave you guys you took so long,” the blonde lady said. Cole was busy digging through the glove box.
“The rest of the team is already heading back, someone got hurt badly,”
So was no one going to tell me what the hell just happened? Or who they were?
“Who are you?” I asked.
They both looked at each other before Cole decided to speak.
“Well I’m Cole, that’s Cate. Jude is the other guy you met and the blue haired girl is Vida, and we work for the children's league.” Cate turned to smile at me.
The Children’s League, I know I’ve heard about them before. I’ve heard someone mention them. I waited for him to say more. Instead Cate spoke this time.
“You’re probably wondering how we found you. I'll tell you it wasn't easy, they made it hard to find the building itself,” Cate said. “You’re very important to them, I’m going to guess you’re the only Orange they have.”
As far as I knew I was the only orange they had. The only other kids I’d seen were blues, yellows, and one red.
“What was the point of taking me?”
“We help kids like you, our job is to stop the camps and expose the president,” Cole said. Camps? What camps was he talking about? Why would they need to expose the president? How much time had passed?
“What camps are you talking about?” For all I know they could be lying to me, trying to make it seem like they’re the only ones I can trust.
They shared a confused look.
“Do you know how long you were there?” Cate spoke this time.
I really didn’t know. I could never keep track of the days with how much they worked me and I was almost never allowed to leave the building. I guessed that it had been at least 3 years.
They took my silence as an answer.
They might have been telling the truth but these people were strangers. They did save me from that nightmare but no one was nice for one reason. I had to learn that the hard way.
“Well, we will be taking you somewhere safe, far away from here,” Cole was the last one to speak.
My only option was to stay with these people until I could find a way out. Get myself some supplies and find a place to go. Using these people should be no problem, after all they should know not to trust an orange.

Cole’s POV of the red training facility.
It was fun writing this but it also hurt 😂😂 I got some of the ideas for this from one of @liamdarlinstewart post so I hope you enjoy it :)
TW:Mentions of blood and some violence.
We had only been driving for twenty minutes and I already wanted to kick Liam out of the car. The argument had started when I asked what Liam’s plans were after we freed the camps.
“That is a stupid idea Liam,” this kid really thought leaving the league was a good idea. “And you think you’re gonna take Ruby with you?”
“I left the league before, did you think I was gonna stay this time?” Liam asked. “I know what’s best for Ruby and the league isn’t it.”
“And where would you go? The league is the safest place for all of us,” How could Ruby stand him long enough to date him?
“Oh yeah the league is so safe, a building almost collapsed on us,” he continued, “And your own agents were gonna sell us to fulfill their own agenda,” he may have had a point on the second part.
“Look, we can rebuild the league better than it was before. We can put the wellbeing of all psi first,” I said. I knew the league wasn’t perfect before, but now with us in charge it could be what it was supposed to be.
“You can do that-” I glanced at him then had to do a double take. I grabbed the collar of his shirt pulling it down to reveal two small hickies on his neck.
“What the hell is this?” I yelled. I wondered where Ruby and Liam had gone last night. I checked just about everywhere.
“It’s none of your business!” Liam said. I wasn’t going to let this go easily. Liam and Ruby were barely adults they had no buisness having sex.
“It is my business if I’m gonna be an uncle!”
“You’re not gonna be an uncle!” Did he think condoms were 100% effective?
“We’ll finish this when we get back, I’ll be talking to Ruby too,” he rolled his eyes as I said, “Clearly you two need the talk.”
“Jesus,” Liam said.
We were about two miles from the facility when I decided to pull over. I grabbed my gun from the back seat putting it in the waistband of my jeans. Liam unplugged the phone we brought to document everything we needed.
Clancy better be right about this place or else I was going to take his books when I got back.
We started our walk to the facility. I looked over my shoulder frequently. The last thing we needed was to get caught. Ruby needed us to free Thurmond.
It felt like the walk would never end when the facility was finally in our sight. I took the phone from Liam as he began scoping out the area to make sure no one was around us. I took a couple pictures of the building making sure to send them to Nico. Once I was sure the pictures sent I started to make my way to the facility, Liam was right behind me.
As we got closer we could see that there were PSFs outside and a big transportation truck at the back of the building. We crouched down in some bushes. From where we stood we could see a group of about 15 kids in red uniforms being moved into the truck. The front gate was open and there didn’t seem to be anyone guarding it. They’re not as smart as I thought they were. Liam and I shared a look of agreement and moved as quickly as we could without being noticed.
We stopped at the gate swiftly checking to make sure the coast was clear before heading for the back.
There were four PSFs in total that were monitoring the reds who were getting in the truck. Another group of 15 reds came out the back doors and into the truck. All I wanted to do was burn these PSFs for what they were doing. But I could do that after we were done with Thurmond. As they were closing up the truck Liam and I took that opportunity to sneak into the back doors.
The place smelled like bleach and burnt rubber. I had to stop myself from gagging at the smell as I took pictures. We knew we had to find the vent that led to the big training room. Clancy said that it was the best way not to get caught.
Once we located the correct vent we made our way through the maze of tunnels. It felt like we were going in circles. Liam then stopped abruptly in front of me. When I looked to see why he pointed to a vent door. I looked down and I could see it was a big room with kids in it. They seemed to be training, they were all paired off in twos fighting each other.
Liam slowly pushed the vent door open and lowered himself onto the grates that were above the room. Usually they would have had PSFs on it but today seemed to be our lucky day. Once I was next to Liam I started taking pictures again.
I focused on a pair of boys who were right below us. The blonde one seemed to be getting angrier every time the brunette boy pinned him down. He looked like he wanted to set the place on fire. Me too kid.
Each second that passed I could feel myself getting hotter, I couldn't help it. My hand began to twitch. Seeing these kids being used as soldiers pissed me off. I wanted nothing more than to get them out of here right now. I had to remind myself of why we were here.
I decided to take a few more pictures then Liam and I were going to leave. I’ve seen enough and honestly if I stay here any longer I might actually burn this place down.
Right as I took the last picture one of the kids looked up at me like he could sense we were there. Before I could even react I felt a sharp pain in my neck. Liam screamed as I fell back on the ground. I felt warm liquid running down my neck. Liam quickly put his hands on my neck to try and stop the blood from coming out.
How did they know? We were careful coming in here, how could someone have seen us? Did Clancy set us up?
“You- you have to go,” I choked out. He had to get out of here, they wouldn’t keep him alive. Ruby would never forgive me if I let anything happen to him. She told me to take care of him.
“I’m not leaving you!” he said. Of course he wasn’t going to listen to me.
“Ruby ne- needs you,” If he was gonna leave for anyone it would be for Ruby.
I could hear people shouting below us. I knew there were PSFs already making their way up here.
I replaced his hand with mine. It was barely enough to slow the blood coming from my neck.
“Go, I’ll be- right behind you,” I knew I wasn’t getting out of here but he needed to think that I was.
As I was trying to stand up a PSF had just reached the top of the stairs. All it took was Liam moving his hand towards him and the PSF flew right into the wall behind her. Liam climbed back up into the vent we came in. Once his whole body was through the vent I closed it behind him. I took the heat I felt in my body and pushed it to my hand melting the latch making sure Liam couldn't get back out.
“Cole no!” Liam cried.
“Go Liam!” It’s the last thing I said to him. I could barely hold myself up at this point. When I looked back towards the stairs there were four PSFs just about to reach the top of them. The PSF closest to me had his gun raised ready to fire. In one second the flames that were in my hand were flying towards him. But in that same second he fired his gun. The bullet hit my arm.
“Shit!” I yelled.
The PSFs body was covered in flames as threw himself to the ground. The rest weren’t able to suffer the same fate. The other PSFs decided to use their white noise machines attached to their hips.
When it hit me I dropped to my knees, it felt like needles were going into my brain. They didn’t turn them off until I was flat on my back. If they figured out I was a red they’d save me so they could use me for their little operation. At this point I knew that I had two options left. To let them take me and make me one of their soldiers or to go out on my own terms.
The thought of them using me to hurt the people I loved was enough for me to make my decision. I wasn’t going to let them ruin me. All I wanted to do was protect the family I had left and this is how I was going to do it. I let go of my neck letting the darkness in. I wasn’t able to protect Claire, but I was able to keep Liam safe. It was only one of the things I wanted to do. It was now up to Ruby to do the rest.
One second I heard the PSFs yelling then the next… nothing.

Taking care of Vida after she comes back from an op.
TW: Mentions of blood
Waiting for Vida to get back from her op was always awful. Anything could go wrong, they could get captured, she could get hurt. I would’ve gone with her but I had my own op with Jude. We got back two days ago, we had missed her by only a few hours.
“You know the more you check your watch the slower time goes,” Jude told me. We were eating dinner together in Cate's room. “Plus we both know Vida is too scary for anyone to even try to hurt her.”
Vida was an intimidating person and didn’t take shit from anyone but that didn’t mean she was invincible. Every op she left for I was a mess, even if Ruby was with her who is freaking powerful.
“You may have a point there but I still can’t help but worry,” I said. “Vida did say that they would be back by dinner.”
“But we haven’t even finished our dinner yet.”
“Technically we were late to dinner so.” I told him. I finished my chili and put my empty bowl on Cate’s night stand. Checking my watch again, I decided to go see if they were back.
“We were only late for dinner because you made me wait for Vida with you.” Jude got up to follow me grabbing my bowl.
“You could’ve left,” we started to head to the elevator stopping at the kitchen first.
It looked like everyone else had put their dishes back by the time we got there. Jake and Andrew were cleaning the dishes. They were one of the few yellows we had here.
I walked up with an apologetic smile, “I hate to do this to you but we’ve got two more bowls.”
Andrew turned around but kept his soapy hands in the sink.
“Wow you guys just love to make our lives miserable don’t you?” Andrew joked.
“It’s my favorite thing to do,” I chuckled. He took the bowls from Jude’s hands.
Jude and I started to make our way to the elevator to wait for Vida again. Right as we turned the corner we saw Vida and 4 other agents coming out of the elevator.
“I said I’m fine now, let me go dumbass,” Vida tried to push away the agent who helped her walk in. From where I was standing I could see the cut that was on her forehead.
I left Jude and ran the rest of the way to Vida.
“Jesus, you are not fine. Come here,” I attempted to take vida’s arm but she waved me off.
“I can walk just fine,” she could barely put her left foot on the ground without yelling in pain. Vida was one of the most stubborn people I knew.
“Oh my god just come here.” I picked her up ignoring her protests.
“If you don’t put me down I will fight you,” knowing they were empty threats I started to walk towards the infirmary.
“I’ll put you down when we’re in the infirmary,” I said. She responded by rolling her eyes.
Once we were in the infirmary I set her down on a bed finally being able to look at all of her injuries. Her knuckles were bruised and had blood on them which I had guessed wasn’t hers. The skin around the cut on her head was already starting to bruise. I also noticed a smaller bruise on her left cheek.
I started with cleaning the blood off her face and hands.
“So what happened? Looks like it was a rough op,” I asked. I didn’t really want her to tell me what happened, just seeing her like this upset me enough.
“Yeah well the skip tracers had it worse,” she laughed. “The first guy we ran into definitely wasn’t expecting us.”
Vida winced as I started to clean the cut on her head.
“Sorry,” god I hated this.
“I’m fine, but anyways there was only supposed to be like five PSFs there and the kid we needed,” Luckily she didn’t need stitches so I began to bandage the cut.
“But of-fucking-course there was 15 instead,” she looked more annoyed now than she did when I first saw her.
“So how did you get out of that?” I asked.
“We beat their asses with no problem,” she bragged.
“I think if it was no problem you wouldn’t look like this,” I pointed to her face. She slapped my hand away looking offended.
Once I had finished with the bandage I took a look at her ankle. It was swollen and already turning purple.
“So how did you hurt your ankle?” I asked while carefully taking off her shoe.
“I rolled my ankle when this asshole grabbed my other leg.”
“Can you feel this?” I put light pressure on the soft part of her ankle. She immediately tried to move her foot from my grasp.
“Motherfucker.”
“I’ll take that as a yes, does it hurt here?” I put pressure on her ankle bone this time. She made an uncomfortable expression.
“Not as much as what you did before.” That’s a good sign.
“Well then I diagnose you with a sprained ankle and I’m gonna prescribe an ice pack and rest,” she didn’t look happy when I said the word rest.
Vida always wanted to go on ops, it was her thing. She was smart but could be reckless at times. Taking time to rest was probably the most boring thing to her.
I wrapped her ankle with an elastic bandage and grabbed an ice pack for her. She tried to get off the bed but I stopped her when she got her good foot on the floor.
“If you keep trying to walk I’m gonna take out your other ankle,”
“And if you keep trying to stop me I’m not gonna kiss you anymore,” I just rolled my eyes and picked her up.
“Vida you and I both know that you wouldn’t go a day without kissing me by choice,”
We were almost to our shared room when she responded.
“You’ll never be able to get me to admit it,” she was smirking.
“You know you kinda did admit it by saying that,” I told her. Vida seemed hardcore on the outside but I knew she had a sweet side and she let me see that.
The room was empty when we entered. I forgot it was game night. We always held it in the gym since it was the biggest room we had.
I set Vida down on her bunk and propped her foot up on a pillow as she made herself comfortable.
“I’m about to get the best sleep of my life I’m so damn tired,” Vida said.
I laid down next to her and she cuddled up next to me.
Taking care of Vida for these next few weeks was gonna be interesting but fun nonetheless. I knew Vida wasn’t gonna stay in bed willingly.
“Actually now that I think about it I haven’t kissed you in like four days.” I hadn’t thought about it either. I was too worried about taking care of her.
She turned her head to kiss me. Her soft lips moved against mine slowly. I hadn’t realized how much I missed her lips until now.
Twenty minutes had passed when Vida pulled away.
“All right I’m going to sleep now,” she laid her head on my chest. I couldn’t help but laugh as I wrapped my arms around her. She was asleep within minutes, I knew because she had started to snore.

“I Had a Bad Dream”
I wrote this a couple of days ago based on a dialogue prompt I read from @love-me-a-good-prompt I didn’t really proof read it so if there’s any typos I’m sorry but I needed to post this as I should have days ago lmao.
The wood floor felt cold as Amelia walked down the hallway. Her whole body was shaking with every step she took.
The door was cracked slightly, just enough for her to peek her head in to see he was sleeping. Although Amelia didn't want to disturb Lucas she wanted to be able to sleep tonight. Thinking about how awful these past few weeks had been she pushed the door open.
The only source of light was coming from his table lamp. He must have forgotten to turn it off. Making her way over to his bed Amelia took notice of how nice his room was. His room was always so organized and so was he. It was one of the many things she liked about him.
Amelia shook his arm as she sat down on his bed. Lucas didn’t move. He was always a heavy sleeper. Giving his arm another shake he slowly started to wake up. He looked confused when he saw Amelia sitting there.
“Amelia?” her hair was all tangled probably from sleeping on it. But he thought she looked adorable anyways. What he noticed the most was the fear written across her face.
“I had a bad dream,” Amelia told him.
This hadn’t been the first nightmare and probably wasn’t gonna be the last. It didn’t take long for Lucas to find out about the nightmares. In fact he knew something was off way before he knew exactly what was going on.
How she started drinking coffee in the morning even though she never drank coffee. How the bags under her eyes started to become darker as the weeks went on. How she would fall asleep during movie night, Amelia never fell asleep during movie night. She was the one who made the rule that no one was allowed to fall asleep during moving night.
She denied anything being wrong when he asked her of course. But Lucas didn’t let things go easily. At first he thought maybe she was going out at night. But that didn’t make sense, Amelia didn’t like going out at night. She was always in bed by 10.
He didn’t figure it out until one night he had to pull an all nighter to finish a school paper. Mr. Evans always loved assigning extra work knowing finals were next week.
Finishing his last few paragraphs he heard Amelia scream. It was just Lucas and Amelia at in their shared apartment that night since Izzie and Maisy were at the movies.
Immediately he thought someone had broken in. Running to Amelia's room all he found was her shouting in her sleep, alone. He had hesitated wondering if waking her would get him punched in the face but he did it anyway.
He put his hands on her shoulders, “Amelia wake up it’s just a dream.” She woke up with a gasp looking crazed as if she was still in that nightmare.
“What-,” she started.
“It’s okay, it’s okay. You were just having a nightmare.” At this point she looked embarrassed realizing that he had seen her like this.
She avoided making eye contact with him as she sat up in bed. Her whole body was shaking as her heart felt like it was gonna jump right out of her chest.
“Um t-thanks for waking me up, I’m good now,” Amelia didn’t want Lucas to be in her room any longer than he already had been. She wanted to deal with the embarrassment alone.
“Are you sure? I can stay until you at least stop shaking.” She was shaking so hard she was practically vibrating the whole bed.
“No I’m good I’m just gonna go back to sleep now,” He watched as she laid back down trying to stop herself from shaking.
“Well you can talk to me if you need to. I'll be up finishing my school work,” Lucas didn’t want to leave. He wanted to stay until he knew that she was okay. But Amelia didn’t know just how much he cared for her. She just wanted this moment to be over.
Lucas started to make his way back to his room taking one last look at her hoping she’d change her mind. But she just laid there staring at nothing.
Now realizing that she was stuck in this situation and Lucas wasn’t gonna let it go she turned to face him.
“Yeah I had another one,” she shifted on her feet clearly uncomfortable.
“Do you want to talk about it?” he moved over so she could sit more comfortably. Lucas had hoped she would come to talk to him about it. Sometimes he would stay up extra late just in case she needed him.
“Can I just lay here until I feel better?” That was better than nothing.
“Of course,” Lucas lifted his blanket so Amelia could get under the covers.
The silence was comfortable. Amelia got to feel safe and Lucas got to know she was okay.

Rescued(Cole Stewart)
Cole didn’t die in In The Afterlight and he’s rescued from the red training facility. I made this to help with the pain of what happened to Cole in the books. I hope you enjoy :)
Find Cole, get out unnoticed, and meet back at the warehouse. Way easier said than done. Nico was able to figure out that the video they sent us was fake and that the body wasn't Cole's. So we gathered up what was left of our team to get him back. With Ruby at Thurmond and Liam gone it was up to us to get Cole.
Vida was in the driver's seat listening as Chubs gave her the directions to the red training facility. I stared out the window as he talked.
-Two days ago-
“Please be careful and don't take any risks. In and out alright? Get what you need and that's it.” Cole was putting on his coat as I spoke.
“You should be telling Liam that, he's the reckless one remember?” he said as we walked out of our room.
Liam and Ruby were hugging as we approached the tunnel door. “I'm being serious. I would like you back in one piece please.” Cupping my cheeks in his hands he rolled his eyes. “We will be careful and you will get me back in one piece.”
I didn't want him going even if it was just to scope the place out. Anything could go wrong. And knowing that he got this information from Clancy didn't make me feel any better. I knew Ruby didn't like it either.
Leaning in to kiss me he whispered “Might be two pieces though.” I slapped his arm as he laughed, placing a kiss on my lips.
“Lets go so we can be back in time for dinner,” Liam said as Ruby stood on her toes kissing his cheek. Goodness they were adorable. A perfect match if I was being honest.
Cole pushed Liam towards the tunnel door and then leaned down to Ruby. As if asking for a kiss on the cheek too. She flicked his cheek laughing “You’re ridiculous.”
“Take care of things guys,” That was the last thing he said to us.
-Present day-
“We’re getting close. We'll park a mile away then make the rest on foot. Sound good?” Chubs asked.
“No we're gonna drive straight through the fucking building,” Vida replied.
“Sometimes I ask myself why I like you,”
“I ask myself that same question chubby chubby choo choo,” Vida’s response made me laugh.
We were on foot now making our way towards the facility. The darkness was keeping us hidden as we got closer. My anxiety was through the roof. We had no idea what we were gonna find in there. What if they had already broken Cole the same way they did the other reds. Thinking about it made me sick. I had to stay hopeful.
Once the building came into view we dropped to the ground behind a fallen down tree. The place was in the middle of nowhere, the perfect place to illegally keep a bunch of psi.
“I see two guards at the front gate but none at the back,” Vida was using binoculars to watch the building. “You gotta block us from their vision until we can get up to the gate,” one plus to being an orange was making people see what I wanted them to see or see nothing at all.
“Nico said he could only get the camera feed to loop for 5 mins so we have to be quick,” Chubs was looking down at the burner phone we’d brought.
“They won't see us,” I said, getting ready to lock onto their minds. Ruby was more than willing to help me with my abilities and to teach me some tricks. She was the second orange I had met after creepy Martin. And I wasn't desperate enough to ask him for help.
Lucky for me these guards had weak minds that were easy to slip into. I was making them think the field was empty as we were right in front of them.
“Alright, now work that magic,” Vida said. Chubs was scanning the area around us to check for more guards.
“Open the gate asshole,” He did it with no hesitation. The female guard looked right past Vida and Chubs as they walked through the gate. I made sure that they wouldn't remember what I did.
We ran straight to the back of the building out of sight. Ducking down behind a parked truck we looked at the map of the building Nico had printed for us. If we were right Cole would be on the second floor fourth door on the right. After double checking everyone knew the plan we made our way to the back door.
Just as we reached the door it opened and we were met with a very confused PSF. Chubs’ mind was quicker than mine and without lifting a finger the man was face first on the cement. As we stepped over him I took that little memory of us out of his head.
There was no one else in the hallway the door opened to. I felt the minds of the PSFs who were in the security room as well as the psi who were sleeping. We moved swiftly through the first floor making our way to the second. It was dead silent making it easy to hear my heart thumping in my chest.
When we reached the second floor I searched for his mind praying I’d find it. I’ve been in Cole’s mind before except the first time was not on purpose. I was working in the kitchen that day helping prepare dinner for the other kids. It was the feeling that someone was staring at you, but only two other kids were there with me. I reached out to that feeling only to find myself in Cole’s mind. It took me a second to figure out how this had happened. I realized he was thinking about me. He wasn't in the room with me yet his mind was focused on me. As quickly as I entered his mind I left it, scared to see something I shouldn’t.
I knew it was him the instant I found it. He was awake, his thoughts were calm.
Vida stayed at the door to the stairs to keep a look out while Chubs and I made our way to Cole’s room. I could feel that there were 3 other kids in there but they were sleeping. As I watched his back Chubs picked the door lock.
The lock clicked as chubs said, “You ready?” Of course I am. I nodded.
Slowly opening the door chubs poked his head in searching for Cole. Luckily for us his bunk was the closest to the door. I pushed past Chubs to get to Cole. He had his back to me. I reached over to grab his shoulder. When he turned to me he looked shocked. He was going to say something but I stopped him by putting a finger to my lips. Grabbing his hand I guided him out the door back to the stairs where Vida was waiting for us.
“How the hell did you guys get in here?” Cole asked as we quickly but quietly went down the stairs.
“We rode in on horses and politely asked the guards to let us in,” Vida answered.
“Very funny,” He replied.
When we opened the door we were welcomed with the now very angry PSF that Chubs had knocked out. Before Vida could do anything he kicked her, sending her back against the building's wall. Before Chubs could use his gun I had already entered his mind. How angry he looked on the outside matched with what was on the inside. He went still as I took his memory of this very moment. Whenever I took someone's memory it was placed into my head like it was my own. I felt what he felt in that very moment.
He just stood there staring at nothing as Cole helped Vida up.
“Sit down and don't get up until told,” I commanded him. And that's exactly what he did.
Checking to make sure it was all clear Chubs motioned for us to make our way to the gate. And just like before the guards didn't even know we were there.
Hopping in the car Cole looked like he couldn't believe this was happening. “What did you think we were just gonna leave you behind?” I asked him.
“No, I just didn't think it would be so quick. Thought I’d be stuck in there until after you guys dealt with Thurmond.”
“Y/N wouldn't have let us leave you in there that long,” Chubs said, buckling his seat belt.
“I was also getting tired of their crying,” Vida added.
“What a good friend you are Vida.” I said sarcastically.
“I know right.”
Cole moved to the seat next to me bringing me in close,“I told you I’d come back in one piece,” he said before kissing my temple.
“You just got lucky,” I told him.
We had been driving for 4 hours now. We were getting closer to the warehouse we were hiding out in after Clancy exposed the ranch. I watched Cole as he slept with his head on my shoulder. He looked so peaceful considering what had happened. He had a bandage on his neck from where he had been shot. He was lucky enough for the bullet to graze the skin. Chubs still had insisted on checking him out even though Cole argued that he was fine.
I had him back and I wasn't gonna let him get hurt like that again.
