Why I love TDM so much

I love The Darkest Minds so fucking much. It's about found family. It's about trust and friendship. AND IT CREATES SOME OF THE BEST CHARACTERS I'VE EVER READ.

So obviously the setting. I like how much effort Alexandra Bracken puts into designing a world that I could definately foresee myself in a couple of years, especially with the rise of GMO food (agent ambrosia) and how it dives deeper into corruption and how a government works being that it never truly will care about it's people unlike many other dystopians I've read. I hated Shatter me (sue me, sure.) despite how similar it is to TDM because I didn't get a strong grasp of character and setting and it was mostly romance rather than an exploration of setting and our world.

Moving forward I LOVE THE CHARACTERS! They're realistic and lovable and flaw...ful? Whatever. The characters have a realistic representation of trauma in all its forms, and many of the characters have real feelings and you can really understand and love them. In many YA books I feel like the main hero doesn't really have much personality, but seeing the world from Ruby's eyes is a breath of fresh air. She's not bratty, but she's not perfect either which are the two swings in YA. She constantly feels guilt, and feels real just like if you and I were in the book together, we'd understand what Ruby is going through. And Liam who on the surface is the perfect dude but really, he's trying to deal with his trauma and guilt while simultaneously trying to keep an unhealthy, perfect facade to keep the rest of the group motivated. He has to live with the guilt of Caledonia and Cole as well as the childrens league and he learns to stop putting out a facade and just truly process his emotions. And Chubsie? My stubborn arrogant loveable grumpy bean. He's stuck with Zu and Liam for ages and now theres a total newcomer who may or may not be a threat. How would he feel? He learns to adapt and becomes bestiessss with Ruby which is extremely wholesome. And Zu. She's so sassy, and amazing, and a queen and yet she's also dealing with trauma by voluntarily going into silence because she doesn't have words to deal with her pain. She learns to speak up and become a force for good. I'd go into Vida, but I don't think I have enough time.

I love the found family. The different groups which become like family to each other. The Original Black Betty gang consisting of liam, ruby, chubs and zu. The never fade childrens league gang which consists of nico vida ruby and jude and maybe cole. And the final new black betty gang which basically pulls Vida into the family. the beyond the night gang with sam, mia and lucas. The darkest legacy gang with priya roman zu max and mayyyyyyybe even lana if she recovers. They are all family and as ruby states family is not the place but the people you are with and these characters make each other comfortable and happy and together and just adopt random children along the way in the case of the darkest legacy gang. Lets call them the psion ring gang. I just love the found family thing that this book series creates for us.

Podía ver a Diana poner a una pequeña Cassie entre sus brazos y escucharla despotricar sobre como su mamá no la dejaba aprender a pelear.

No se dio cuenta de cuando fue que puso a Tim entre sus brazos (por dios, era tan pequeño) y como parecía que el niño se derretía ante el tacto ¿era egoísta querer que esto nunca acabe?

Ah lo lejos pudo escuchar como Bart comenzaba a llorar, haciendo que Conner lo imitada, seguido de Cassie y después a Tim que estaba entre sus brazos.

Já havia se passado algumas semanas desde que se conheceram na cozinha da Caverna e Conner se sentiu à vontade para se aprofundar mais na amizade com Victoria. Acreditava que ela era a única que poderia entendê-lo cem porcento em todos os campos da vida e de como ser e viver como um projeto de laboratório criado pelo mesmo homem.

Acho que é muito cedo para pensar nisso, ela respondeu. Gostava de ser sua filha e já o admirava quando estava nas ruas, porém fazia apenas sete meses que morava com ele e não sabia ao certo se tudo já se expressava como uma dinâmica familiar ou como um treinador e seu pupilo. Era estranho, mas reconfortante ao mesmo tempo. Sabia dizer que ele, independente de seus erros e de seus conflitos internos, estava se empenhando arduamente para ser um bom pai para ela. Reconhecia seus esforços, o jeito torto de demonstrar carinho. Eram caminhos de correção contínuo, mas gostava mesmo assim. Não era apenas ele ou ser filha dele, mas viver a família Wayne e um legado de gerações.

Ao menos se sente acolhida, comentou Conner. Victoria sorriu. Sim, ela admitia que se sentia acolhida. Se sentiu desde o primeiro instante que se encontrou com Batman e não podia negar que tanto ele quanto Alfred a fizeram se sentir humana e amada. Depois conheceu Tim. Aquele garoto incrível que a fez colocá-lo na posição de um irmão. Ele teve toda a paciência e calma para ajudá-la a saber combater um humano e como era a fragilidade de um corpo. Clark Kent parecia bem amigável e receptivo. Todos falavam de sua tamanha bondade, caridade, a fama que ele tinha tanto como pessoa civil, um jornalista formidável, quanto como Superman. Ele era um deus entre os homens, era assim que falavam em Metropolis e pelos corredores das instalações de Cadmus em que ela estava. Tomando um pouco de coragem, ela o questionou sobre como foi sua vinda para a equipe. Conner deu de ombros e sorriu com desanimo. Disse que Dick, Kaldur e Wally o resgataram de Cadmus. Que naquela noite ele descobriu o que era e quem era o Superman. Ele, Clark, não pareceu lidar bem com a situação e isso o fez se sentir rejeitado. Esse sentimento se perdura desde então.

Vic, instintivamente, segurou a mão de Conner e o abraçou dizendo que ele não deveria se esforçar tanto para ser reconhecido. Talvez fosse complicado para o Clark saber lidar com isso mesmo depois de tanto tempo, mas a paciência era uma dádiva que se construía com o tempo assim como reconhecimento, familiaridade e carinho. Não conseguia acreditar que Clark não acreditava em seu potencial e não o via como membro da família Superman. Independente disso, ele podia ter a certeza de que ela sempre o reconheceria. Entendia essa necessidade de se sentir pertencente a algo, mas ele já fazia parte de muita coisa. Um membro da Justiça Jovem, da Equipe de Operações Especiais e era um super-herói aclamado. Às vezes estava buscando o que já existia e apenas não consegui ver.

Summary:

Realistically, there's no way that all of the Sentries working under Drakkon were awful and bad or even assholes. Some of them had to be there for protection, if not for themselves, then for their loved ones. From a narrative standpoint, it's kind of stupid that there were only Trini, Zack, Bulk, and a few other would-have-been Rangers left alive after Tommy and Billy popped in and Drakkon popped out of their dimensions. There had to be MORE, and they HAD to be on Promethea helping out the other non-Rangers as best they could during the rescue mission.

And Beyond the Grid would have been so much better if we got to look at the background characters much more than just the makeshift team.

Bonus ideas for scenes that popped into my head for this:

Cameron getting to know a different version of his cousins that are actually completely kickass while simultaneously being emotionally shut down and so damaged he wants to hunt down the Lothor of their universe and do unimaginably horrible things to him.

Kapri has tattoos. That include sleeves along both arms. That Tori can't stop looking at when Kapri is on the training flood while toweling herself off from lifting weights--and almost dropping them on Kira's foot from the distraction.

Grace tossing Conner to Terona when she realizes how much of a mess the Dino Thunder Red is around literally anyone with more muscles than him. Terona knows the young man can respect boundaries, and agrees to keeping him occupied with stuff to do (in spite of also knowing Grace was basically throwing him under a bus; but he has a 'look, don't touch' policy, in spite of Conner checking out his ass so much). If Ethan wanders in to help them out and feed them, there's no complaining.

Clare scurrying around out of sight of the Rangers that still have their powers in an effort to get a better read on the Ranger Slayer. Because while everyone says that she was under mind control, she was bound to Drakkon with obedience through magic, Clare is still suspicious. She doesn't deny that the woman looks weary and sad and was making an effort to get them all home and out of danger, but...if there was even a chance she was still a danger to the Coinless, Clare has to be sure.

Leelee missing Camille and Jarrod, Ryan, Toxica and Jindrax, Dayu, and even some of the total losers in her division. Like a missing arm or leg; a completely unexpected thing since Drakkon won her in a game, removed her from the Mystic Realm as well as removing her vampire nature, and passed her off to the least respected Captain in all of his legions to train. (Who treated her better than anyone in all the world and actually helped strengthen her relationship with Necrolai).

Chip and Xander being bros and getting to know everyone, because it's not like they'll ever get another chance like this in their lifetime.

Entrevista com Frank Iero de My Chemical Romance (2004)

Anos antes de abrir a Contender Boardshop* (*loja de skate), tive o prazer de dirigir o Programa de Música para Etnias e fui sortudo o suficiente para trabalhar com a My Chemical Romance durante alguns anos. O pessoal da My Chem eram uns doces, e essa entrevista foi feita no chão de sua van semanas antes do Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge ser lançado no verão de 2004. Aquele verão mudou a vida de todo mundo. Mas uma coisa que não mudou (desde o início da banda) é para quem a música é dirigida e as mensagens que eles querem transmitir. Eles sempre tiveram uma visão, um objetivo e fizeram sacrifícios para conquistá-los. Nunca desista dos seus sonhos.

Entrevista - My Chemical Romance (Frank Iero - 2004) Frank, há algum tópico em particular que você queira discutir ou conversar nessa entrevista? Ah, meu Deus, sim! Eu estava dando umas voltas depois de um show no Texas quando esse garoto se aproximou e disse, “Eu tenho uma pergunta, mas eu me sinto desconfortável em perguntar”. Eu disse a ele para me perguntar mesmo assim. O garoto respondeu, “Como se sente sobre os fãs não gostando de vocês porque alguns membros da sua banda são gays?” Fiquei chocado, mas disse a ele que se você é racista, sexista ou homofóbico, então a My Chemical Romance não é pra você! O curioso é que nós iríamos colocar um aviso no nosso CD afirmando isso, mas é algo que já está na imprensa. Então, se você é racista, sexista ou homofóbico, por favor não compre nosso álbum, não use nossas camisetas ou sequer apoie a banda!

Você não está preocupado em perder fãs? Não. Tudo nessa banda é sobre aceitação e nós não vamos tolerar esses ideais.

Vamos mudar as coisas um pouco e falar sobre a cena onde vocês cresceram. Eu me lembro de crescer e ir em shows e era muito diferente do que é hoje. A galera costumava ir em shows pelo seu amor à música, por música que significava algo. Você ia à shows de punk rock porquê você não se encaixava em mais nenhum lugar. Era uma comunidade social de desajustados. Sua família não te entendia e o pessoal na escola te chamavam de aberração e tentavam te descer a porrada. Mas quando você estava num show, você pertencia àquele lugar. Lembro que quando caíam na pista, alguém ia lá e ajudava a levantar; quando estourava uma briga, a banda parava de tocar; e quando a galera cantava junto e apontava os dedos no alto, realmente significava algo.

Espero não soar sonhador dizendo isso, mas eu realmente acho que seria assim de novo. Tudo muito frequente esses tempos, as pessoas vão pros shows pra demonstrar o quão durões são e provar suas dominâncias “hardcore”. Agora, não me entenda mal, eu não cresci num paraíso livre de imbecis, nós tivemos nossos problemas com idiotas movidos a testosterona uma vez também. Entretanto, agora parece que tá desenfreado. Tá ficando cada vez mais difícil lembrar de ter tocado num show onde ao menos um cara não tenha sido expulso do lugar. Isso me enoja.

Nós, como comunidade, teremos que perceber que, se não cuidarmos e nutrirmos nossa cena de maneira positiva, não sobrará nada dela. É importante começar bandas, montar e apoiar shows e escrever zines. Isso inclui não estragar os locais e fechar os shows. Cada um tem que fazer a sua parte, e uma pessoa pode fazer a diferença

Eu sei o que você quer dizer. Antes, se alguém caísse em um show, você meio que parava e se certificava de que essa pessoa estava bem e a levantava. Agora é tudo sobre lutas de sexta à noite--meio triste.

Basicamente, eu só gosto de fazer shows em que uma criança não precisa ser carregada porque seu rosto foi ferido.

Malditos idiotas do Circle! Falando do Circle Jerks, qual é a história sobre uma participação especial em seu novo álbum?

Sim, caramba. Como posso dizer isso sem jorrar como um fã? Hmmm, acho que não consigo. De qualquer forma, quando tocamos no festival CMJ do ano passado, conheci um dos heróis da minha infância, Keith Morris. Em primeiro lugar, Black Flag é minha banda favorita de todos os tempos, e os Circle Jerks também são meus favoritos. Keith veio até mim e disse que gostava da minha banda, e eu quase me caguei.

De qualquer forma, eu o encontrei de novo em um posto de gasolina em Los Angeles enquanto estávamos gravando o novo disco, e o encurralei na porta e perguntei se ele se lembrava de mim.  Depois de parecer um pouco assustado, ele disse que sim e eu o pressionei a me passar seu contato para que ele pudesse passar no estúdio e fazer alguns trabalhos vocais.

Depois de uma ou duas semanas, liguei para ele e disse que adoraríamos que ele viesse e fizesse os vocais convidados. Keith aceitou e o que aconteceu depois disso é uma das minhas melhores lembranças de tocar música. Pude vê-lo gravar e depois comemos muita comida chinesa e conversamos por algumas horas. Nós ainda mantemos contato e ele me liga de vez em quando para me dar alguma inspiração enquanto estamos em turnê. Keith Morris é uma das minhas pessoas favoritas e foi uma honra trabalhar com ele.
