Shoutout to all the last name buddies during our school years that we weren’t necessarily friends with but watched each other grow up. Being sat at tables first day of kindergarten; lining up outside after recess before we entered; being assigned to the same group during field trips; sat next to during assemblies; nervously exchanging jokes as we graduated elementary; sat once more at the same tables during high school, relieved to see familiar faces; exchanging glances as you quickly grab stuff from your locker; evaluated on your presentations as one is called right after the next; graduating once more, this time from high school, finally parting ways and entering new worlds apart from one another.

We would never necessarily call each other friends, but we were by each others’ sides during each monumental event of our lives. We eased each others’ worries, cracked random jokes, complained about lines, congratulated each other on our achievements and growth, witnessed relationships flourish and crumble, saw a child become a person, and found solace in each others’ company.

We may not have been friends, but we formed a bond through our last names that will last a lifetime.

Imagine being 16 and being so sure you’re going to die like you’re closing your eyes to fall asleep forever in the child death arena you’re in and when you open them next the most beautiful girl you’ve ever seen who you’ve been head over heels for since you were like seven at least and she’s talking so sweetly to you that maybe the birds have stopped singing to listen to her now too, and she is kissing your face and she is feeding you warm soup and she is so good at acting like she loves you that you realize that the first time you’ve been treated this gently and handled this preciously is here in this cave with this beautiful girl in the child death arena and you think to yourself that you have to keep fighting off death itself if only it keeps that sweet smile on her face.
