i'm seeing that y'all are gonna let watcher control the narrative and act like we misunderstood them and they were never gonna remove their stuff from youtube. you can say whatever you want about their streaming service, but one thing is a fact: they are lying to us pretending that was not their intention and we're spreading misinformation. we not only aren't stupid and understood the video correctly, but also they told variety that that's what they were doing.

100% agree. When your coming out with as big an announcement as you have to pay now to see our new content, you need to make sure you’ve done your market research and have all your ducks in a row especially when you’re known for your ‘eat the rich mentality’.
I don’t fault them for wanting to expand and grow as a company but not realizing a good portion of your fan base isn’t even going to be able to subscribe because of not living in the US seemed a little tone deaf and the wording for we priced it low so everyone can subscribe without taking currency outside of US$ into consideration and the fact that the market is flooded with $5.99/mnth rates is not great. That stuff adds up quick especially when you have other monetary obligations and when you don’t already have a back catalog of videos for viewers to justify spending the money.
I’m one of the ones that could care less about production value. I loved Ryan and Shane when it was just them acting like dorks at buzzfeed investigating behind a desk. I don’t need fancy sets and a crap ton of polished post production. I like the chemistry Ryan and Shane have. They could honestly do their ghost/mystery files as a podcast and I’d be happy.
And finally it sucks for their Patreons because they aren’t grandfathered into this and will most likely drop Patreon to go to the streaming service so they honestly won’t gain revenue there.
The whole thing is kind of a PR nightmare to be honest.
Well, everyone else is commenting on WatcherTV Gate why not me?
Regardless of what you think about the new subscription service, I think the whole announcement was botched.
1) The Countdown - All the hype of the countdown led to a big build-up of anticipation. People were expecting an announcement, and given that the return of the Worth It guys, generally seen as positive, WASN'T the big announcement, people were expecting something even bigger and inarguably positive. Surely you only hype a good surprise? What people got wasn't necessarily Positive or Negative, but Big Change, and I think that threw people. Change creates anxiety, even when it's good change, even more so when people were expecting Just Fun Silly Stuff.
2) The Message - Such a big change needed a polished, planned, perfected delivery. They should have reviewed the wording, checked for ambiguity, gotten as much feedback as possible that their message was clear and easy to understand. However, there was almost immediate confusion over whether all Watcher material was going behind a paywall. This required them to issue several immediate clarifications, which just looked sloppy and unprofessional - Watcher didn't seem organized, even though this was surely a big deal for them. And then the discovery that many or even all international fans were excluded...just a mess.
3) Invoking Brand History - The announcement was tacked on to a retrospective style video that did its best to invoke nostalgia, ironically or otherwise. Some people have clearly taken this as emotional manipulation, even abuse of the parasocial relationship many fans have with the creators. The wisdom of combining money and emotion aside, invoking their history is going to lead a lot of fans back to their Buzzfeed days. The people accusing Watcher of becoming a new Buzzfeed are definitely getting ahead of themselves, but given that money talk and production costs are on the table, it's not a great thing to remind people of how much they loved your content when your budget was $10 and whatever stuff was in the Lost and Found box that day. Fans are going to say "We've seen you do great things with less money, what's going on with your budgets?"
4) Production Value - They brought it up, so now it's part of the conversation. They obviously value unusually slick production for YouTube content, but do the fans? Many fans are saying they watch on iffy quality phone screens or even just listen to the audio. I personally questioned why they built such an elaborate basement set recently - why was that time, effort, and money spent that way? As fans, we want the creators to be happy, but we also want product, and many fans are very openly stating it's the performer personalities and interactions that matter to them, not Grade A lighting design and sound balance. Does Watcher know what their audience wants? Some fans are already vocal about feeling alienated.
And this is just what comes to mind. I'm not saying anything about the WatcherTV thing is fair or unfair. I'm not saying that some fans aren't being weirdly kiss-ass while others are wailing and tearing their clothing. I'm just saying Watcher could have made their announcement in way that caused less havoc.
