Sneak Peak of St. Basil’s Cathedral, with its famous colorful onion domes, from my bus. More photos to follow when I actually visit it tomorrow. Whenever I visit a new city, one of the first things I do is take a bus tour of that city. I know its a very touristy thing to do and normally I’m against being overly touristy. But these bus tours, especially the hop on - hop off kinds, are a great way of figuring out the lay of the land. I am able to figure out the overall geography of the city I’m visiting and get an idea of which places I’d like to check out in greater detail. The tours are also a nice introduction to the city; they provide you with an (obviously limited) introduction to the city, providing some information of its history. This morning, I took a bus tour of Moscow. It gave me sneak peaks of all the important monuments and buildings that I had wanted to visit, plus more places that I didn’t even know existed. Day 1 in Russia. I came across this beautiful archway while strolling down Tverskaya Street, on my way to the Red Square. Unfortunately, tourists weren’t allowed to enter today and so I’ll have to have a proper look around tomorrow. The city is mad with football frenzy. The squares are crowded with people from all over the world with the FIFA Fan-ID’s hanging from their necks. What a city, though. 19th of May, my birthday, was when the kids of Azm-e-Shaoor, a charity school run by Renaissance Pakistan, performed on stage in front a hall full of people at Serena Hotel. The performance, of which I was director, was part of Renaissance’s annual charity dinner; it was a short play on the environment and the ills of cutting down trees. The script, written by me, was loosely an adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s beloved book, The Lorax. The performance was a result of weeks of rehearsals, and learning lines (which I would like to mention were in a language that was not the kids’ mother tongue), and overcoming obstacles and hurdles. Even when we were at the venue, we were subjected to Murphy’s Law. But despite it all (4 mics shared by 12 performers, for instance) the kids came through, with confidence that even adults find difficult to muster, and with huge smiles on their faces. They won the heart of the audience. I am so proud of these kids; it was an absolute delight working with them.
