ImagineOnly Reviews: Halloween (2018)
REVIEWED BY: BUCK RIVERS
Cinema Score: 9/10
Enjoyment Score: 8/10
Tumblr media
Halloween is everything a sequel should be. It progresses the characters, ups the stakes and ties up loose ends without beating a dead horse. It is a great follow up to the original and even has some nods to those terrible sequels.
Cinema Score:
From a cinema standpoint, this film is spot on with the first. The cinematography feels modern, but is still deeply reminiscent of the first. David Gordon Green recreates the feel of John Carpenter’s classic very well and I felt right at home after having re-watched the first before going to the theater.
Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode and does an immaculate job! the original Scream Queen is now a grizzled warrior who has spent the past 40 years preparing for Michael’s return. Curtis is extremely believable as a woman who has been scarred by such a traumatic experience as well as an empowered protagonist. She holds her own against the odds, and it always feels believable when she fights Michael.
The kills here gruesome without being torture porn, much like the original. I was in sheer suspense through a good portion of the film. In my opinion, this film does suspense even better than the first.
Enjoyment Score:
This movie was very enjoyable if you like the first one. I’d say it is a bit slow when compared to many modern slashers. Some of the younger audience members seemed to be underwhelmed by the end. I loved it personally, but I understand if you’re more into the Rob Zombie remake for its unrelenting violence.
All in all, Halloween (2018) is a must-see for Horror fans. This is the definitive sequel to the slasher that started it all. You won’t be disappointed by the twists and turns. Just don’t go in expecting an action-packed bloodbath.

ImagineOnly Reviews: Assassination Nation *Minor Spoilers*
REVIEWED BY: BUCK RIVERS
Cinema Score: 9/10
Enjoyment Score: ?
Tumblr media
Cinema Score:
Assassination Nation is the over-the-top but effective feminist social commentary film that I think Spring Breakers thought it was. It is a journey through the depths of America’s most devastating character trait: Self Righteousness.
This is seriously a movie you should see without knowing much of anything about it so I’m really not going to take long here.
From a standpoint of cinema, this movie nails almost every angle. The cinematography is biting and deliberate even if it feels a bit, “look at me” some times. The acting is superb. Apart from hating the sound of the stereotypical valley-girl accent, I never was taken out of the film by a performance. The direction is clearly meticulous and artful. There is a lot of violence in the 3rd act. This is done realistically and seriously. If you can’t deal with blood, skip this one because there is a lot of it.
The only part of the film making I found to be jarring was the pacing between the 2nd and 3rd acts. There is a small time jump and I wasn’t quite convinced of how quickly things must have escalated in this town. I understand though that this is a piece of art first and foremost, but up until then, nearly everything was hyper realistic. Just don’t go in expecting a documentary. You will have to suspend disbelief a bit for this one.
Enjoyment Score:
In terms of Enjoyment....I mean come on! Did you ENJOY 12 Years a Slave? Did you ENJOY Old Boy? This film definitely has its moments of pleasure, but for the most part this is a dark film. I think everyone should see it, but I didn’t leave with a smile on my face. The filmmakers didn’t want me to smile. That was the point, and thus it succeeds.
I think it should be said that this film is one of the most topical films. It is up there with Blindspotting for me, so if you liked that film, you may want to check this one out. Again, I don’t really want to spoil plot points so please just go see it.
Expect to cringe and expect to watch a lot of Youtube videos explaining it when you get home.

ImagineOnly Reviews: The Nun (NO SPOILERS)
REVIEWED BY: BUCK RIVERS
Cinema Score: 6/10
Enjoyment Score: 9.5/10
Tumblr media
The Nun is a surprisingly masterful take on the long-lost Gothic Horror genre. It is a treat to enjoy, and a welcome addition to The Conjuring universe. It does, however, reuse far too many tropes and tricks from past films to make it a movie that will keep you up at night.
Cinema Score:
From a cinema standpoint, The Nun is exactly what you’d expect. It has its fair share of jump-scares and predictable camera tricks. Sadly, James Wan’s style is becoming rather predictable, although I wouldn’t say that is is quite STALE just yet. Nun of the scares really grabbed me, although I will say that there was definitely a brilliant sense of suspense throughout the film.
You can really only spin the camera around the actor so many times, revealing something standing behind them that wasn’t there before, SOOOO many times before it gets tiresome. Sadly, the FIRST time this happened, I was already aware of the trick. (This could be because of how many movies I watch)
The acting was pretty good. The casting was perfect! The story was a bit bare bones, but was never boring.
Enjoyment Score:
I am always deeply entertained by the films in this series (minus Annabelle) because they deliver a well put together set of setups and scares that take you on a journey. The Nun doesn’t disappoint there. It specifically succeeds in the atmosphere department.
The Gothic atmosphere is one that is very rarely put to good use these days. It was a great idea on the part of the filmmakers. Another basic haunted house movie in this series would have likely been terrible. The saving grace of The Nun was its ability to work with the slight genre change in ways that worked.
There is way more to SEE in this film compared to the others. Gothic Horror isn’t about hiding everything in the shadows. There are big castles, creepy statues, monsters, demons, snakes, and corpses coming to life. The Nun uses all of these well, and while I can’t say the film succeeded in being “Scary”, I will say that it was a fun ride.
All in all, The Nun is a good time! I was smiling and talking to the screen under my breath the whole time. The film is simply fun, and the style it presents is one that I would love to see utilized more often. It isn’t going to make you sleep with the lights on, but if you like spooky grave yards, and dank cathedrals, The Nun has you covered.

BE CAREFUL RENTING TEXTBOOKS FROM BARNES AND NOBLE!
BE CAREFUL RENTING BOOKS FROM BARNES AND NOBLE! Hey guys. So I rented a textbook from #BarnesandNoble. When I got the book it had a slightly bent cover but other than that it seemed to be fine. I ended up not using it at all during the summer semester, and it sat on the same desk for months, unopened. At the end of the rental time, I repackaged the book and took it to UPS. (B&N had me pay for return shipping too btw) I get an email last night saying that the book is damaged, and that I've been charged $122 for it. There are no pictures and no documentation of what the book looked like.
Tumblr media
I've called them and they've basically stated that they have no documentation of the quality of the books when they send them out versus when they get them back. It's all on the customer to deal with the charges because unless they take my word for it, nobody has any proof that I DIDN'T damage this book. I'm guilty until proven innocent and I've been told to ask UPS myself if there may have been an issue in transit. I have no idea what the book looks like right now, and to top it all off, they took the money out of my account TWICE! There are two separate charges of $122 dollars on BoA!!
Tumblr media
This is insane that THEY have no proof of any problems, but I have to deal with the consequences. They're sending out used books and then charging you full price for the issues and don't even tell you why. I wouldn't use #BN for rentals guys. That's way too much money to just take from me without an evidence that I did anything wrong. I doubt many of you guys can afford this kind of crap. Now I have to make more phone calls to BoA and to UPS to try and figure out what happened. The CUSTOMER has to do the leg work to prove that they don't deserve these immediate charges, AND they're taking double!!

ImagineOnly Reviews: Christopher Robin
REVIEWED BY: BUCK RIVERS
Cinema Score: 9.5/10
Enjoyment Score: 9/10
Tumblr media
Christopher Robin, starring Ewan McGregor, is an adorable film that had me sighing in reflection in every scene.
From a cinema standpoint, Christopher Robin is well put together, well paced (for the most part) and serves as a welcome return to the world that Winnie the Pooh fans grew up with. Ewan McGregor was the PERFECT choice for this character. I identified so much with his performance. He portrays a man whom you want to change, while never making you hate him. I genuinely understood where he was coming from as an adult, but still wished to see him learn to live again.
Of course, many of us came to the theater to see the iconic character, Pooh and his friends. I felt the CGI on the animals was done very well. In a few scenes, I wasn’t sure if they were using practical stuffed animals when Pooh was “playing dead”. My only question throughout was why Owl and Rabbit were real animals but the rest were clearly stuffed toys. I’m not sure if that is something addressed in the books or the shows because I wasn’t a huge fan growing up.
The story is nice but falls into some of the family movie cliches. The ending in particular wraps everything up a bit too nicely, but I wasn’t really bothered by this.
From an enjoyment standpoint, I really had a good time. I found myself smiling a lot when Pooh and his friends were talking. I laughed at nearly every line out of Eeyore’s mouth. Likewise, I found myself nearly in tears. This film will make you think about the finer things in life. It made me miss being a child and appreciate the time that I spent in a world that wasn’t so complicated.
I mentioned the family movie cliches, but they really weren’t a problem for me. I have been missing the feeling that is gotten from a film that is just meant to make you feel good. No adult jokes sprinkled in, no cynical messages or self referential humor. This film was about embracing your childhood and not missing life, trying to work through it. It told this message without having to stoop to so many of the things that “family movies” do these days and I was very appreciative of that.
All in all, Christopher Robin was way better than I would have dreamed. I never found myself drawn to the books as a child, but I sure am considering giving them a look. If for nothing else, I hope to share them with my own child one day.

Stevan Seagal Named US-Russian Humanitarian Representative????
https://deadline.com/2018/08/steven-seagal-named-by-russia-as-special-rep-to-us-for-humanitarian-ties-1202440219/
Tumblr media
So somebody explain to me how this bastard was just named a Special Representative for Humanitarian relations between the United States and Russia!!
I have very little to say about this man other than the fact that his movies of the past 20 years or so (Minus his role in Machete) have been almost all terrible. Oh, that AND the fact that he has been accused of sexual assault at least two women!
Why anybody would make him an important figure in international relations is beyond me! At the very most, he’s just a crappy actor!

‘Christopher Robin’ Receives Moderate to Pretty Damn Good Reviews
Tumblr media
I plan to review this film as soon as I can; not because I am a fan of the source material (I’m really not), but because I feel like there aren’t enough family films out there as it is.
Christopher Robin is a film about the now, middle-aged human lead character in the Winnie the Pooh series of books, shows and movies.
Pooh was never a big part of my childhood in particular. I watched the show from time to time on Toon Disney, but besides that, I have no major connection to it. Primarily, I want to see if this film turns out to be a family picture that really has heart and effort put into it.
It seems that movies, shows and games are more and more catered to older audiences. This wouldn’t be a bad thing per-say, if not for the lack of quality of the few things that are made just for kids. I remember there being just so many games to play when I was a kid. Now, If you’re not into Lego, you’re kind of out of luck.
I want to see what they come up with in kid’s entertainment. It is a very important art form that too many companies overlook. The Emoji Movie can not be the benchmark of child cinema!!!
