so fascinated how isagi and kaiser got exactly what they did/didnt want but didn’t/did need at the end of NEL arc

bc at the beginning of it all, kaiser announces (unprovoked and embarrassingly) that he will prove he’s the best, that isagi will be the clown in his circus, and subconsciously treating others with malice and winning games will make him feel better about himself. but then guess what? he loses out to isagi who pulls a tables turned card and calls kaiser himself the clown and everything he declared so arrogantly at the start crumbles down as he tells ness he lost and is embarrassing and is just a piece of shit. and ness could’ve left him but he didn’t, he did something we’re all gagged about. he affirmed kaiser’s humanity and said that he’d stick with kaiser not bc he saw him as this untouchable emperor he so clearly tried to pretend to be but as a flesh and bones and blood human being. kaiser technically lost the NEL “battle” but he gained one step closer to his healing journey with ness. now who knows if the healing journey will actually happen but the groundwork is there.

and on the other hand. isagi by all means won the NEL arc, having the same bid as rin and both being number 1 which is crazy considering how much better rin was at the very very beginning. he beat kaiser, the emperor, he got the highest bid, he should be living on cloud 9 and ecstatic. he won everything after all. but he’s not. he’s silent on the bus and sure he’s thinking of nagi but he’s also isolated. not once do we see him interacting with anyone else (gagamaru is taking a nap next to him). reo and rin are silent for obvious reasons and i wonder why shidou wasn’t as excited as he normally is but then there’s isagi looking down at his fans from the roof of the bus. which is where he makes that realization that he enjoys the feeling and yet it’s terrifying. bc at any moment he could fall and lose everything he had bc now he, like kaiser, is tying his entire self into football and being #1. snuffy told his team that football is well and good but football players are people first. ness has affirmed that to kaiser. but isagi is seeming to slip away from that mindset.

in fact kaneshiro has told us that one day we might not love isagi and this looks like the beginning of the extremely toxic mentality he’s gonna take on. i’ve seen theories of why (chigiri acl being pretty convincing and devastating) but it becomes kinda clear that isagi is gonna isolate himself and ruin himself and everyone around him to get to that #1 spot. and so despite winning the NEL, despite maybe even winning the world cup, he’s gonna lose himself completely. to make matters worse kaneshiro could even make japan lose the u-20 world cup, thereby making isagi’s mentality even more broken and desperate, leading to an eventual wc win but who knows.

tried to be as unbiased as possible here bc i hate isagi with a fervor yet unknown to mankind. and then he steps off the pitch and becomes goofy fun isagi and im like huh but it might just be that silly isagi that’s slipping down the drain. all this to say, despite isagi winning and kaiser losing, for their health and character arcs i think this could be the beginning of kaiser winning (aka healing mentally) and isagi losing (aka deteriorating mentally).

and i’m gonna do this for togatomi bc they’re v dear to me as well

interestingly enough (and maybe obviously) both of them were shown with light in their eyes starting out. the scene in the show were choji FIRST meets togame isn’t in the manga so we’ll move on but when they’re laughing w their friends their eyes are both bright

one of the best chapters, 19, aptly titled “the setting sun” choji’s eyes remain bright until the instant he says he wants to make shishitoren as strong as him. that’s when his pupils literally go black. and then as he dropkicks that dude and looks at togame they’re literally black pits. and because of this togame’s eyes lose its light (haha sun imagery i know) and we get the hair scene as well so not only does he lose his light/sun he’s bound himself w his hairstyle (this tragic guy).

and when he lets his hair down, in that panel there’s a faint pinprick of light shown in his eyes, the first showings that he’s finally free. (but not wholly bc there’s still choji he needs to bring back). and togame and sakura acknowledge the convo they had, his eyes are getting brighter, and then rip to him when choji decimates him.

but moving on to choji. his is so obvious, just black holes that symbolize his depression and existential despair. maybe it goes hand in hand when he couldn’t see his friends were far behind him or the fact that he made togame’s face look like that (sad). they’re a direct reflection of the black world he’s in as the sun (himself) is extinguished. his eyes remain pits even as he talks it out with togame. it’s in the instant he recalls how much fun they had so we see a reflection of light in him (probably purely through memory). and how much he realizes togame did for him by protecting him and letting the blame fall on himself and he breaks down in tears and apologies and omg the sun is back.

i’m a big fan of how the beginning of the solution to these gang’s problems (save keel) is people. it’s not the end all be all but it’s a start. choji remembering how much fun he had when he was with his friends. suzuri realizing life might still suck bc of their hunger but having his friends back him up to give him the confidence and love to still lead them. and then they put their trust in him and he was able to figure out a solution for their gang through ppl (via roppo ichiza giving them jobs). to most recently with takiishi who might still be apathetic to most people, but willing to call the 2 ppl he does acknowledge by name as a starter.

it’s the power of friendship but nii-sensei doesn’t make it overbearing or annoying bc he’s able to address that the problems still exist, they’re just alleviated a bit once we have those we love around us to support us. choji’s depression isn’t going to magically vanish nor is suzuri’s gang’s bare necessities. but now shishitoren can form a support group for choji and roppo ichiza have given them the means to provide for themselves. time can only tell for endochika lol but that’s what makes these heartwarming ending scenes truly wholesome and meaningful for me rather than cheesy or too preachy.

also won’t ever shut up about how takiishi’s eyes were dead until the moment he decks umemiya and then there’s suddenly a light in them which lasts until his last panel (and in my personal opinion his entire demeanor changes even though ik he just got thrashed within an inch of his life so he’s a bit tired but still tell me why does he look emotionally tired)

meanwhile endo despite being cheery the entire time of the fight still has no light in his eyes. despite witnessing takiishi smile and win (at first) and even at the end of their fight, his eyes are still dull. it isn’t until the moment takiishi calls him by name does he finally get light. and it sucks its only that one panel and the light is rly small but it’s still there as a direct result of takiishi acknowledging him.
