I grew up in a very conservative part of my state. I was bullied heavily and I was called a lesbian before I even knew what the word meant. All I knew was that it was shameful and it made me a pariah among my peers. Elementary and middle school were hard, extremely so. I was outed in middle school as lesbian, non-binary, and a furry. My school counselor said I was a bad influence because I was depressed and queer. I remember being scared to go to school most days. High school was easier, I joined theater then and had a very good group of people around me. My theater teacher was the first adult who supported me and used the name I wanted to go by. I still talk to her

This week I went to my community's second pride festival, there were over 400 attendees. I saw my first drag performance, I met another furry in person for the first time. It was the first time I felt fully confident to be myself, the first time I wasn't scared when someone looked at me, the first time I felt seen by a large group and not judged for being visible. And I'm fucking white. I can only imagen the fear my POC community members feel when their visible

That's why pride is important. We're celebrating seeing each other, being ourselves, our queer elders, and surviving

Why is there no straight pride? It's not illegal to be straight anywhere. It's not a statement to hold hands with your straight lover. Straight kissing isn't inherently seen as sexual. Your existence isn't seen as political. That's why there is no straight pride

We're here, we're queer, and we aren't fucking going anywhere

It was A W E S O M E ! ! !

There was a drag performance, local shops had some booths, food, and some bouncy houses!

There was a no kings protest a few blocks away, and a good chunk of the people joined in with pride after they were done.

All in all, it was a great day!

I'm going to my first pride today!!!!!
