Guide for writing intersex characters for the perisex author

CW: H slur and medical/surgery discussions, fetishization of intersex bodies, intersexism, and mention of assault

Vocabulary:

Intersex: a spectrum of medical disorders affecting hormones, genetics, first and second sex characteristics, weight gain and loss, and other things

H*rmaphrodite: an outdated clinical term used for animals and plants; a slur against Intersex people

Perisex: opposite of intersex; not being intersex; synonym with dyadic and endosex

Intersexism: axis of oppression Intersex people face

Intergender: an Intersex specific gender identity

1. Why do you want your character to be intersex?

If it is because they are part animal, alien, monster etc. probably don’t make them intersex! Aliens can just.... be a different sex you don’t need to make them intersex! We are a marginalized community that already deals with dehumanization and we are seen only as medical anomalies so don’t continue this trend!

“What if the animal I’m basing it off of is hermaphroditic?”

“Hermaphrodite” is a slur when used for humans! Don’t use it for us! Even if your character is based off an animal there is no reason to have everything based off the animal

Is it a throw away trait not brought up in context and just used to to diversify your character? Think this through carefully! If it is important to their character- medical reasons, how they interact meaningfully with their gender, an axis of oppression that affects them, something they’re an activist for (but remember not to make this their only personality and please don’t write all about their trauma, we’re often traumatized but... y’all often don’t know about this)

2. Why is their intersex condition being brought up?

Intersex is a spectrum of medical conditions. Why is their condition being known?

If you are using your characters intersex condition to “justify” being nonbinary, this is not ok and you should not make your character intersex.

Does your character magically become intersex through magic, fusion, etc? That is not ok, do not make your character intersex

Is their intersex identity only brought up in contexts of them having surgery, having to have surgery, or sexual assault? Do not make your chapter intersex, this is not ok. Many intersex people are forced to have surgery, and are assaulted, but this is not your story to tell, and it is not ok when it is our only representation.

Are you writing smut about an Intersex person and talking in detail about genetalia? That’s not ok!!! Do not write it! Intersex people are not a fetish, and it is gross to go in detail about our bodies just because we “aren’t normal.” We are all different, and you can have intersex characters have sex, but do not treat them any differently than perisex characters

3. How are you bring it up?

Often there’s no reason for their condition to be brought up, unless they joke about it, they are visibly intersex, talking with a partner or doctor, or pride related reasons. Intersex people are usually very quiet about their condition due to stigma and literal danger from medical professionals. If you want to write about a character who has had surgery or realizing they’re intersex as a SIDE PLOT but like, please don’t talk over our voices and explain our stories. Those are ours to tell

4. Dysphoria, lgbt relations, and abuse

Wether intersex people are lgbt is an intercommunity discussion and boils down to “do they personally identify as lgbt.” There’s no consensus. Cis intersex people and trans intersex people alike can have dysphoria and complicated relations to gender! Intersex people can and often are cis or intergender! However, not every intersex person has complicated feelings about gender at all! We are at a higher risk of abuse from partners especially if we’re “not normative,” but I urge you to not write an Intersex abuse narrative as they are overdone and overall mostly harmful
