✨MONDAY ACCOUNTABILITY✨ It's been a slow week, but I'm pleased to see steps in the right direction! Between hand cramps and mental exhaustion, the creativity hasn't really been flowing recently. I'm not a big fan of the little bits coming out, but crap writing can always be edited. Bank holiday can only mean one thing!! 💍🧙‍♂️🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️🧝‍♂️🧔👬👬🌋 When I walked into a cinema in Birmingham with my friends in 2001, I had no idea how much this story would take ahold of me. My mates had never seen me so quiet as they found me during the nearly 3 hours of the released edition. I was captivated! This enchanting tale of good vs evil, heroes vs monsters, spoke to something deep within me, awakened an understanding, a joy I hadn't quite figured out before. As soon as I got home, I asked my mom if she had a copy, and then I spent every waking minute that I wasn't at school (even some that I was 🙊) reading. When I was done, I trawled the Internet daily for anything and everything related to Frodo and his quest. I became utterly obsessed! And it was through my passionate research of all things Middle Earth that I discovered fanfiction. It was through fanfiction that my love of writing blossomed. ✨MONDAY ACCOUNTABILITY✨ Progress was hampered by me trapping my right index finger in a van door at work towards the start of last week 🤕 I shan't gross anyone out with details, but I did a pretty good number on it. I'm not worried about permanent damage, but I haven't been able to type on a keyboard for any prolonged period of time without getting cramps and aches in my hand, so I've allowed myself to take it easy this week. Even so, I started another chapter and I've gained 865 words/1 page since last week's check in. ✨ MONDAY ACCOUNTABILITY ✨ I was struggling with tension headaches most of last week, meaning I wasn't feeling up to staring at a screen when I got in from work. Instead, I spent more of last week working over my notes and brainstorming some new connections. Over the weekend, however, I managed to pick up some slack and all things considered, I'm happy with my progress. I've gained 1067 words/3 pages, although I actually wrote a little more than that. I edited out a couple of hundred words or so that I wasn't happy with, as well reworking a small section that was a bit lumpy and giving a proper end to the chapter I picked back up last week. After battling with Stephen King's The Stand since the new year, I finally finished it a couple of days ago. It's one of the best selling novels of his entire career, arguably the top fan favourite and... I didn't enjoy most of it 😕 I'm pretty new to the SK bandwagon and in general I really like his writing style - also, I think the concept of The Stand is a fantastic one - but of the 1325 pages, I only enjoyed the final 200 pages. For me, it was just too slow going - I like a book to trip me up every other chapter and I just found there were far too long periods between anything interesting or relevant happening. I persisted so it could be ticked off my TBR list, but it's doubtful I'll find myself returning to that one - at least any time soon. Now I'm going to turn my attention to this beauty - The Regulators! Originally written under his pseudonym Richard Bachman, SK also released a "mirror" novel called Desperation at the same time. If I enjoy this, Desperation will be my next adventure! ✨ MONDAY ACCOUNTABILITY ✨ It's not been as productive a week as I'd hoped. I really wanted to get an extra 10 pages/5000 words written up, so I was disappointed to start with when I compared the stats... but then I told myself off and looked at my progress with a positive mentality instead. I wrote a whole new chapter. I fixed the end of a chapter that's been baking my noodle for a couple of weeks. I revisited another chapter I abandoned a while back because what I wanted from it wasn't coming out right, but I've now managed to make it more workable. I have an additional 6 pages/2427 words of my first draft of book 2, and I'm mostly happy with the quality of what's coming out 🙌🏻 I like numbers, they really help keep me on track, but they aren't the only thing that's counts. It doesn't matter how many words I write if the quality is poor. B R E A T H E 🌬 My anxiety is at an all time high this week for a number of reasons, and I've been drawing this symbol on myself several times a day using a homemade fragrance I've become obsessed with. When I'm overwhelmed and I feel out of control, I bring it back to my breathing to guide myself back to a centred place of calm. My mindfulness guru and best friend @kiera.boyle holds a Mindful Meditation class on zoom every Thursday at 8pm. She's been teaching us various breathing and calming techniques for when the stress takes over. I've been applying her advice daily and it's making a big difference to my ability to navigate my panic attacks. I'm so grateful for that half hour every Thursday where I can block everything else out and focus on grounding myself again.
