idk how to post fics on here but i originally posted this on ao3 awhile ago!
like a gentleman
Jason had never been more grateful for the cover of night. His reputation would be tarnished if anyone saw the threatening vigilante running through Gotham holding a bouquet of flowers. Of course he’d occasionally run into a scuffle and have to gently set aside the flowers before dealing with the problem but he had been careful enough to keep the roses mostly out of sight. Only a few petals had been lost, which the man considered a success.
Dashing over the familiar roof tops and triple checking his surroundings until he was sure he wasn’t followed by any unsavory characters, Jason climbed down to the fire escape that sat outside of his apartment window, keeping a careful grip on the still intact bouquet. Slipping the window up slowly and silently, the vigilante ducked in, closing the window behind him and removing his red helmet.
A figure, wrapped in blankets, was fast asleep on the couch, the tv quietly playing in the background. Jason sets his helmet and the roses softly on the table before walking over to the couch, squatting in front of the figure. Ripping off his gloves and tossing them away, he allows his hand to caress the hair peaking out of the blankets. A soft, mumbled hum is his response.
“What happened? Couldn’t make it to the bed?” Jason asked, his voice soft and warm. The figure shifts and a hand comes out to grab his own.
“Was waitin’ for you, silly.” is the sleepy reply.
Jason huffs in fake disappointment, “I told you it’d be a late night.” His hand moves to brush back messy hair. Shifting to sit up, the figure, Eden, looks up at the vigilante. She releases his hand to reach up to his face. With gentle fingers she removes the domino mask Jason forgot to take off. A second later her hand slides down the front collar of his shirt as she reaches in to grab a chain holding a wedding band. Eden takes a moment to fix the necklace into place, this time above Jason’s red hood uniform.
“You say that almost every night my love, and almost every night you find me here anyway.”
“Your stubbornness proceeds you.” Jason softly tucks a strand of her equally stubborn hair behind her ear before placing a kiss upon the woman’s forehead, “Time for bed.”
Eden stands from the couch, the blanket pooling on the floor, and stretches. Jason lets his eyes fall to her midriff as her shirt rises, before he stands from his squatted position.
“You better be taking a shower first. No stink allowed in our bed.” She playfully teases, her hand carding through his black and white hair. Jason in response tugs her into his embrace, pulling a huff of laughter out of her.
“I got some flowers for you.” He mumbled, face pressed into her hair, breathing in her smell. The scent of pastries clung to her even now as it always did after a shift at the bakery. Eden always brought home extra treats for Jason and his undeniable sweet tooth. “They’re on the table,” he adds, not wanting to let go quite yet.
“Oh my sweet Jay. Thank you, love.” Eden, poised on her toes, lands a kiss on his lips. “Now go shower, you smell.”
With feigned annoyance, Jason rolls his eyes and leaves the embrace of his wife with one more kiss to the top of her head, before heading to the bathroom. Eden however, shuffles over to the table, a soft smile on her face as she finds the beautiful bouquet of roses by her husband's red helmet. She moved through the kitchen with practiced ease, opening a cabinet and bringing out a vase. The sight of Red Hood’s helmet by the flowers stirred a memory in Eden. The day they had met hadn’t been as romantic as she would’ve wished but she would never trade that memory for anything.
Three years ago the bakery was being robbed. Of course it was, this is Gotham after all. Eden, who was at the front counter, had a gun pointed to her chest and tears threatening to fall down her face when Red Hood bursted in, grabbing the gun from the man and knocking him to the floor in a swift motion. With the butt of the gun, the burly vigilante knocked the robber unconscious and gave an “all clear” to what Eden had assumed was an ear piece hidden under his helmet. Fear still fresh in her veins, her trembling continued but the tears still stubbornly hung in the corners of her eyes. The vigilante wasn’t unknown to the woman but the news never mentioned the sheer imposing size of the man. It didn’t help that a voice modulator made him appear even more intimidating.
The masked vigilante had turned to face Eden, as he checked her up and down once for injuries and then again a second time, which made her heart leap. She moved behind the counter and grabbed a fresh cookie which she handed to the man.
“As a thank you. I made them not too long ago so it should still be warm.”
Red Hood gave an unintelligible grumbling , taking the cookie in one hand and the still unconscious robber in his other, and with one last look toward Eden, left without another word.
Red Hood had visited the bakery only a handful of times after that, claiming the cookies were “alright” but always leaving with a box full. Jason, ever the sweet tooth, gets spoiled with as many pastries as he wants since marrying the baker, a year and a half ago.
With the sound of her husband in the shower, Eden goes about her nightly routine of triple checking the locks on the windows and front door before finally collapsing into bed. Jason enters not long after, his wet hair flopping down into his face making him look younger. Eden lays with opened arms, inviting her husband to collapse into them to which he happily complies. Brushing the hair away from his face, the woman plants a kiss on his forehead.
“I love you Jay. Thank you for the flowers, they’re beautiful,” She whispers sleepily.
“You’re beautiful.” He tucks his face into the crook of Eden’s neck. “I love you so much.”
