The Weight of Being

Work, classes, study. Work, classes, and studying were what I spent the bulk of my days doing. Once, my dreams were my reality. They’ve become nothing more than memories, fading into a blur. Now, I was stuck in a rut, a continuous loop I couldn’t escape.

“Vivian?” I blinked. The sound of my name pulled me out of the haze I was in. Did someone speak to me?

My seat was secluded from most others, near the left of the lecture hall. Voices bounced on and off the walls, blending into a dull slurry, and I felt like I was worlds away from all of them. Hesitantly peering up, a youthful woman, appearing around my age, glared back at me. She was beautiful, conventionally. Clear and tanned skin, rosy cheeks with a light sprinkling of freckles, and smooth dark hair. It would be easy to find someone else who looked just like her.

“That is your name, right?”

I nodded. She appeared irritated at my lack of words, so I cleared my throat. “Yeah. Uh, who are you?” my voice sounded hoarse. It had been a while since I had spoken to someone else. The woman kept staring at me as if seeing me bored her. It was as if I wasn’t worth her effort. She rolled her eyes, something I presumed she did a lot. She spoke, “I’m Liana. We’re partners for the project.” I must’ve been asleep when the professor talked about that. I’ll have to pay closer attention next time, I guess. “Oh, right,” I began, forcing a tiny smile, “That’s my bad… When do you want to start?”

Liana stared at me, treating me as a clueless toddler. My breath got caught in my throat, and my chest tightened as if a corset was crushing my ribs. Goosebumps prickled my arms, the look in her eyes reminding me how small I’d become. I knew what came next. It was always the same story, different wording. “I’m sure you can handle this one. I’ll leave it to you, ‘kay?” she suggested, sounding syrupy sweet. There was something bitter buried within her tone. I barely noticed. She turned, her footsteps echoing in my ears, slowly getting farther away. My hands clenched at my side, nails digging into my palms until I realized I was still there, standing where Liana had left me.

I couldn’t utter a word. The only thing I could do was let her win. My life had been full of girls like her flattening me beneath their shoes, always with the same smile. It was easier to allow it to happen, to let them take the upper hand. At some point, fighting back lost its worth. I chose to take the easy route instead. My strength wasn't taken all at once. It had been drained out, drip by drip, until one day, I no longer had the energy to stand.
