Urban Diary Feeling fresh as a daisy on a winter’s day A lavender-scented south westerly breeze blows. It envelops me in a non-seasonal warm embrace. It’s February, and yet some people are wearing short sleeves on this sun-kissed Sunday in the #ColumbiaFlowerMarket. This former poverty-ridden slum has blossomed into one of #London’s iconic must-visit places. Originally a Saturday trading market, it was moved to Sunday during Victorian times to accommodate the needs of the growing #Jewish population in the area. Nowadays, the market is more than flowers. There are vintage, art, and coffee shops everywhere. Urban Diary A #neighbourhood reclaims its streets Although it’s been sixteen years since it was first rolled out, I only became acquainted with the “Streets for People Project” recently. It was during one of my random walks through #Hackney, east London, specifically, the #Cazenove Ward, that I came upon the artwork on the pavement. “Streets for People” was an ambitious project that sought to engage local residents in a long-term regeneration programme. From rubbish-strewn streets, the neighbourhood was transformed into a hub of social meeting places and child-centred play streets. Urban Diary Poe’s ghosts dance around the trees We reach the other side of #HampsteadHeath, what some call the Spaniards, after the pub on Spaniards Road. The sky is the colour of a used tea bag, and this renders the landscape around us a sad shade of beige. We like it better here. It’s quieter than on the “proper” footfall-heavy Heath. Occasionally, #mountainbike riders, #dogwalkers, and #runners break the silence, but overall the only company is Poe’s “vast forms that move fantastically/to a discordant melody”. The #trees complement the sense of otherworldliness. Around their trunks gather the “spirits moving musically/to a lute’s well-tunèd law”. We sit down and open the #book we’ve brought to read together. Urban Diary Skating away (on the thin ice of a new day)* They all wait for their turn. Like athletes competing in a version of the Winter Olympics, but for winged creatures. They have an appreciative audience. We all gather up on the bridge. The professional photographers and the amateur ones. The ones with the long lenses and the ones with state-of-the-art mobile phones. The ice-cold wind presses against our cheeks. The bright noon sun heralds a (false) promise. The first #seagull glides forward. It is light enough for the surface not to crack. Unexpected (and free) entertainment at Kew. Another one soon follows suit. And then, the rest goes. We ooh and ahh. It's mid-morning. A one-pound-coin-shaped sun ghosts through the trees in #LordshipRec, giving us brief hopes of the cycling training going ahead.
